IRVINE, Calif. -- Point Loma won three of four games at home last week against No. 20 California Baptist to move up to second place in the PacWest standings with a 13-7 record, four games behind No. 1 Azusa Pacific. Point Loma has now won eight of its last 10 PacWest games after sweeping the final doubleheader of the series with California Baptist. In the series opener, Garrett Irvin threw 8.1 shutout innings to lead the Sea Lions to a 2-0 victory in which John Balliet earned the save. Both players were recognized with weekly honors. Holy Names earned a win over the No. 1 team in the nation, beating Azusa Pacific 12-9, but the Cougars won the other three games to take the series and improve to 27-3 on the season. Isaiah Carranza threw a complete-game shutout in one of the three wins for his second-consecutive shutout. Biola and Academy of Art had its series moved to Santa Clarita, where the two teams split the four-game series. Biola’s two wins helped the Eagles remain in third place in the conference standings, trailing Azusa Pacific by five games. Academy of Art is now back eight games after winning the series finale 6-0 as Gonzo Rios and Chris Rost combined for a seven-inning shutout. Hawai`i Hilo won the first two games of its series against Fresno Pacific before the series concludes with a doubleheader on Monday. The Vulcans didn’t have any extra-base hits, using eight singles and four walks to score seven runs. Six of those runs came in the ninth inning in the comeback win.

Week 9 Preview This week, two of the top three teams in the conference will meet as Biola and Point Loma play a four-game weekend series as both teams look to make up ground on Azusa Pacific, which is not in action this week. This will be the first meeting between Biola and Point Loma as conference rivals since the two teams were in the GSAC in 2011. Point Loma enters the series having won eight of its last 10 games in PacWest play. California Baptist will host a four-game series against Concordia that begins on Thursday. Both teams are looking to bounce back after having lost three of four against Point Loma in their previous series. Hawai`i Hilo will finish its series against Fresno Pacific on Monday and then start a new series against Dixie State on Thursday. Only two and a half games separate the Vulcans and the Trailblazers as they head into the series. Academy of Art hosts Holy Names this weekend. Both teams enter the series under the .500 mark, but Academy of Art is 14-15 on the year.

PACWEST PLAYERS OF THE WEEK PLAYER OF THE WEEK

John Balliet, Point Loma OF/LHP, Jr., 5-10 -- Mission Viejo, Calif. Balliet had four multi-hit games last week as Point Loma won three of four games against No. 20 California Baptist. Balliet now has a six-game multi-hit streak, during which the Sea Lions have won five games. Balliet went 9 for 16 in the series with seven runs and three RBIs. He added two home runs and two doubles. In the opener of Saturday’s doubleheader, Balliet was a tripe away from the cycle and scored three times. He boosted his batting average on the season to .345 with three home runs. The junior also recorded two saves with two strikeouts.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Isaiah Carranza, Azusa Pacific RHP, Jr., 6-5 -- La Verne, Calif. Carranza earned his third Pitcher of the Week recognition this season after throwing a second-consecutive complete-game shutout. This time the junior struck out 12 batters in the 5-0 victory over Holy Names. He brought his ERA on the season down to 2.72 as his record improved to 7-0. Carranza has now gone 18-consecutive innings without allowing a run. Azusa Pacific now has a 27-3 record on the season and the No. 1 ranking in the nation.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

Garrett Irvin, Point Loma LHP, Fr., 6-0 -- Corona, Calif. Irvin led Point Loma to a 2-0 victory over No. 20 California Baptist by throwing 8.1 shutout innings to earn the fourth win of his career. The freshman scattered six hits and a walk, while striking out four to earn the win. He now has a 1.49 ERA on the season as he helped Point Loma move into second place in the PacWest standings with a 13-7 record in conference play this year. Point Loma is 17-12 on the season and won three of four games against No. 20 California Baptist.
