Port of Hamburg Overview The Port of Hamburg is a port in Hamburg, Germany, on the river Elbe. The harbour is located 110 kilometres from the mouth of the Elbe into the North Sea. It is named Germany's "Gateway to the World" and is the largest port in Germany. It is the second-busiest port in Europe (after the port of Rotterdam), in terms of TEU throughput, and 11th-largest worldwide. 9.74 million containers were handled in Hamburg in 2008. The harbour covers an area of 73.99 km² (64.80 km² usable), of which 43.31 km² (34.12 km²) are land areas. The location is naturally advantaged by a branching Elbe, creating an ideal place for a port complex with warehousing and transshipment facilities.

Container Terminals in the Port of Hamburg Four large container terminals are available in Hamburg. High-performance handling with short mooring times means that even the biggest container carriers leave the port again after one or two days. Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) The Container Terminal Altenwerder is among the most modern container handling facilities in the world. Container handling is almost entirely automated – driverless vehicles transport the boxes between the quay and block storage areas. A total of 15 container gantry cranes are available at the four berths for large container ships. Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) Measured in both area and container volumes, the Container Terminal Burchardkai is the largest cargo handling facility in the Port of Hamburg. More than 5,000 ships per year are loaded and discharged at ten berths with a total of 27 container gantries. Modern Twin-Forty container cranes can load or unload two 40-foot containers in a single movement. Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) The Container Terminal Tollerort provides four berths with a total of eight container gantries and can handle post-Panamax size ships. The terminal area will be expanded in the coming years and two additional berths are to be built. CTT has its own container rail station. 720 metres of track and three new Transtainer cranes make it possible to handle block trains quickly without shunting. Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg The EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg is centrally located and has a direct connection to the motorway A7. Six large-ship berths with 21 container cranes (of which 19 Post-Panmax) and more than 140 Van Carriers ensure rapid handling on 365 days and around the clock. The business activities of the terminal are completed by intermodal und cargomodal services.

transport connection The port of Hamburg provides a comprehensive network of intermodal transport services between the German seaport and the hinterland. Several rail operators link the coasts with over 15,000 locations in the main economic centres of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Furthermore there are shuttle trains which ensure the link with South East Europe and container block trains which operate beyond Poland as far as Mongolia.
