A brief history... The first American Art Tile period began in the late 1800s and lasted until the Great Depression of the 1930s. Such notable companies as Batchelder, Moravian Tile and Pottery, American Encaustic Tile, and Malibu Pottery created and produced some of the best and most original products. Unfortunately, the Depression put these and many other small and medium-sized tile companies out of business. A great darkness fell over the land of tile. . . . Nearly fifty years later, in 1980, ceramist and painter Michael Pratt and Reta Larson, a textile artist and incessant home remodeler, began Pratt & Larson Ceramics. Pratt & Larson was among the first of a new wave of small companies producing original tile designs for national distribution. In 27 years, the company has grown from two artists working in a home basement studio to over 130 people working together to produce the nearly 1000 items that make up the Pratt & Larson product line. Pratt and Larson and their staff of artists have created style lines of botanical, sealife, animal, and architectural designs, in addition to select historical designs from the ’30s. From the beginning, the emphasis has been on creativity, originality, and quality. Pratt & Larson is unique in the industry for creating and producing fourteen style lines and four distinctive glaze lines: R-gloss, Parchment matte, Watercolor, and Craftsman, as well as several specialty glaze surfaces. Any style line can be ordered in any glaze color. This is a highly flexible and simple design system, allowing any individual piece to be ordered in any color. Decorative relief designs are available either in a single glaze color or with handpainted detail to accent the design, a process known as polychrome. Pratt & Larson tile can be used to express unique and beautiful ideas in classical and natural design through a complete range of surface and color options for any room or application. Pratt and Larson Ceramics represents a continuing tradition of exploration and research. Our broad aesthetic range of glaze options includes solid and stony mattes that fit perfectly into turn of the century “Arts and Crafts” style homes, as well as brilliant, fluid glazes with hand painted decoration. When set, our tiles create beautiful, active, alive surfaces. The hundreds of colors and textures offered provide a complete palette for designers working in any tradition or mode. Any of our tiles can be ordered in any glaze color. Variations in color, texture and shade may occur. We recommend that you request current color samples prior to placing your order. Custom Color Matching: Pratt and Larson Ceramics can match many colors in the various glaze options. A sample of fabric, wallpaper or tile is required. Remember that color matching is at best an approximate art: Exact matching is seldom possible. Send us your sample and we’ll create a color for you. 5

Matte
Reflecting the Arts and Crafts heritage of American Art Tile, these stony glazes are more rustic, complex, and variable than other glazes in our line. In the C200 series spectacular visual activity can be found in every tile. Crystal formations, deep fluid pools of glass, and dry matte surfaces create a truly unique line. The C300 glazes are designed primarily for counter top use, matching Craftsman colors that are not recommeded for countertops. All Craftsman colors come standard on textured field.

Polychrome A Colorway is a Pre-Selected Polychrome Arrangement Pratt & Larson colorways are handpainted, a process known as polychrome. Standard Colorways are painted to reflect the colors of plants and animals as they are found in nature. Leaves are green, branches are golden, cherries are red, etc.
Each Colorway number reflects a corresponding background glaze color. The background glaze color affects the appearance of the hand painted detail colors, causing each colorway to have a distinctive appearance.
The background color is W40. A colorway in Watercolor is called a waterway. Based upon the W40 background color, this is Waterway 40 or WW40.

Changes to Standard polychrome You may order polychrome painted “as in nature” (our standard color placement) or you may specify substitutions using colors shown on the Polychrome Color Chart. Simply indicate the specific color placement on a copy of a line drawing (found in this book). Due to their unique chemistries, different glaze series can not be combined in polychrome. Samples for approval are strongly recommended when ordering custom polychrome.

Pratt & Larson Ceramic’s Vintage Illustration line is a modular system that can be reconfigured to fit almost any space. To help you figure out how to accomplish this easily and quickly, we have come up with blank patterns in 6, 10, 12, 14 and 18 x 24 inch dimensions. Each pattern is broken down into a parts list for ordering ease. Patterns can be stacked to build to different heights: 12 plus 14 becomes a 26x24 pattern and so on. Patterns can be turned on end and added together to form 24x various length panel sizes. If you need to build to an odd size: 13, 15, 17 19 etc., you can expand patterns by using one inch liner material- 6x6 plus 1x6 becomes a 7x6. The quantities of each pattern module are stated. Catalog Notes: Location: Pratt & Larson tile is manufactured in Portland, Oregon. Our tile is sold only through our network of dealers in the US and Canada. Direct sales will not be accepted. Please refer to the “locate a dealer” page on our web site www.prattandlarson.com to find a dealer near you. Sizes: All sizes listed in our catalog our nominal. Our handmade tile is by nature slightly irregular. Field tile is approximately 3/8” thick. Variation: Pratt & Larson tile is hand made. Color, shade and finish variations are to be expected. We recommend that you request current color samples prior to placing your order. Finished order may vary slightly from samples. Usage:
Please refer to the usage chart on p.90 or the glaze section of this book when ordering. We have developed both counter top and wall-only glazes. Proper selection should be made according to intended use. Our tile is not frost resistant.
Glazes: As with all glazes, some wearing, scratching and crazing may occur over time. This is to be expected. Lighter gloss colors may cloud or shadow if installed in a shower. This will vanish as soon as the tile dries out. The tile does not lose its integrity. All non-vitreous bisque will absorb moisture; however, it only shows with these lighter, transparent glazes. Crackle: The RC, W and WV glazes are intended to have a crackle (crazed) finish. Tiles ordered in such glazes will continue to craze for some time after installation. Such glazes are not recommended for kitchen work surfaces or floors due to staining. All crackled glazes should be sealed with penetrating silicone sealer before and after grouting to prevent water penetration and tile discoloration. For long term maintenance we recommend sealing crackled tiles every 6 months to further protect the glaze surface. Craftsman: Due to the stony, textural surface of these glazes, special attention is required to prevent grout hazing. We recommend using a coat of Old English Furniture Polish Lemon Oil as a grout block prior to grouting. Excess oil is removed through the grouting process or with soap and water. Do not let wet grout sit on craftsman glaze surfaces for an extended period of time as this increases the likelihood of hazing. Grouting: When grouting we recommend using a 3/16” grout line. Craftsman, RC Crackle, Watercolor and WV Victorian glazes should be sealed prior to grouting. We recommend using sanded grout. Cleaning: Use a non-abrasive, non-acidic household cleaner. Do not use an abrasive scouring pad when cleaning tile. Please read cleaning product label to verify an acid free product. We recommend Soft Scrub with bleach. Inspection and Installation:
All products should be inspected immediately upon receipt for damage, breakage or missing material. Damage, whether obvious or hidden, must be reported to the transportation company within five days of receipt of the shipment to avoid forfeiting claims for damage. Keep all packing materials until a claim has been filed. Any question regarding color, size, or shape must be brought to our attention before installation. No claims will be honored after installation.

Floor Usage
