Preface

This special issue of Fuel Processing Technology includes a selection of papers presented at the 3rd International Congress of Energy and Environment Engineering and Management (IIICIIEM 2009), held in Portalegre (Portugal) from 25th to 27th November 2009. The Conference was aimed to provide an opportunity to academics, scientists, consultants and companies of the energetic and environmental sectors to interchange experiences in different thematic areas. Over 120 communications of authors from 15 countries were included in the Conference programme, 62 of them as oral presentations. This special issue includes 16 peer-reviewed research papers presented to the sessions of IIICIIEM 2009. The organizers wish to demonstrate their deep acknowledgement to the members of the Scientific Committee, all of them relevant scientists in their respective fields of knowledge. We greatly appreciate the efforts of the members of the Organizing Committee. The Conference could not have been successful without their essential task. The organizers wish to thank the plenary speakers Prof. A. Mastral, from the Institute of Carbochemistry of Zaragoza (CSIC) and Prof. V. Gómez-Serrano, from the University of Extremadura, for their excellent plenary lectures. We are also very grateful to the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre for providing the facilities where the Conference was held as well as to
