The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District (PVPUSD) values our employees and the impact they have upon the success of our students in one of the leading school districts in the nation. The second phase of our response to three well-deserved retirements is to announce two principals and our Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. Pending Board approval, we are proud to announce three appointments. Mr. Frank Califano will return to his roots as the principal of Miraleste Intermediate School. Mrs. Trista Ramirez will continue working with her current community as the principal of Palos Verdes Intermediate School. We are also pleased to recommend Dr. Matthew Horvath as the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. The vacancy at Ridgecrest Intermediate has been posted for internal and external competition. Board of Education President, Anthony Collatos, stated, “Building on the momentum of succession planning and identifying dedicated leaders, we are pleased to have two outstanding internal candidates to lead our schools. Mr. Califano is a loyal and committed principal and will provide the attention that Miraleste deserves. Mrs. Ramirez has proven herself in every aspect of school leadership throughout her PVPUSD career. We are equally excited to welcome Dr. Horvath to the PVPUSD community. He will provide strong leadership based upon his record of success and his breadth of experiences.” Frank Califano, New Principal, Miraleste Intermediate School Mr. Califano is returning to Miraleste, where he previously served as an assistant principal for nine years. Since his initial departure, Mr. Califano has lead Palos Verdes Intermediate School for the last nine years, building strong relationships with the students, staff, and community. He is a proven administrator with an ability to communicate authentically. We believe Mr. Califano is the perfect fit for Miraleste and look forward to watching that partnership grow over time. Mr. Califano shared, “I am coming home. My time at PVIS was incredible and I thank the PVIS community for all of the support they have given the past nine years, but to finish my career at the school that gave me my start in this district was an opportunity that I could not pass up.” Trista Ramirez, New Principal, Palos Verdes Intermediate School Mrs. Ramirez has served PVPUSD over the past eighteen years as a counselor at Palos Verdes Intermediate School, Ridgecrest Intermediate School, and Palos Verdes High School. She has served as the Associate Principal of Curriculum and Instruction at Palos Verdes High School for the past six years. Mrs. Ramirez is completing her doctoral degree at USC with an emphasis in mental health of students in high-performing school districts. Trista offered, “I have truly loved my time at Palos Verdes High School, working with the students, faculty, staff, and parents. I am so excited to return to PVIS – the school community where I first discovered my passion for working with students. I am still a Sea King!”
