SUMMER READING

PWPLS Summer Reading 2015 FAQ Why isn’t there much focus on reading books?

Our summer reading program’s mission is to promote and develop enthusiasm for literacy. This is especially important during the summer when most students are not in school. About 70 % of the activities in our summer reading program are directly associated with literacy, whether reading, writing, or obtaining a reading resource. Reading is still our most important goal, and you can choose to earn all 50 points solely by reading. The other summer reading activities are dedicated to developing enthusiasm for other literacy and learning opportunities, such as visiting a museum, drawing, or writing.

Do I have to complete all of the activities? Do I have to do them in order?

You can pick and choose which activities you want to do. You are not required to do them all, and they do not have to be completed in any order. Almost all of the activities can be repeated as many times as you like.

Isn’t reading 100 pages too difficult for younger readers?

Picture books are usually about 32 pages, and Easy Readers are about 50. Completing three picture books or two Easy Readers satisfies our 100 page goal. Be sure to include plenty of reading aloud and listening opportunities too. Twenty minutes of bedtime stories = 3 points. Remember, every library storytime attended counts as 20 minutes of read aloud time and earns 3 points, too!

Why do kids and teens all do the same activities and earn the same rewards?

The activities were selected because they encourage literacy for all ages, and kids/teens have the option of tailoring the activities they choose to match their skills and abilities. We selected prizes based on universal suitability and were able to enhance the program with grand prizes generously donated by community partners.

How do I add all the books I’ve read to my log so I get credit for school?

You can enter more than one title in the “Title” field of any activity, and you can also enter titles in the “Comment” field of any activity. You can view and print your log, which will show the title you enter in either field. Although many schools accept participation in the PWPLS summer reading program, as evidenced by printed or paper logs, to satisfy their summer reading extra credit option, PWPLS’s summer reading program is not tied to any school or school system.

How do I win prizes?

When you complete various activities (Including reading!) and accumulate 25 points, you earn a magnetic poetry frame and an entry into the grand prize drawing. When you get to 50 points (thus finishing the program), you earn a book bag and a second entry into the drawing. Over 200 grand prizes will be awarded via a random drawing from all participants who have earned at least 25 points. These prizes include 12 Kindle Fire HD6s, Target gift cards, and many more.
