Real Men Read Change a Life. Volunteer Now. Who: Our volunteers are business and community members like you from across the Indianapolis area. They’re men who make a big impact in a small amount of time; they read to IPS elementary school 4th-graders for just one hour, once a month. What: Real Men Read is an Indianapolis Public Schools mentoring program designed to inspire students and build literacy skills by establishing supportive and beneficial relationships between children and caring adults. Why: As a Real Men Read mentor, you have an opportunity to be a real-life role model – a man who shows children how much fun, excitement and knowledge can be found within the pages of one little book.

Volunteering At-a-Glance
A mentor commits to eight hours volunteering for the year (includes training). A one-hour training is held in September. Seven, one-hour classroom visits are scheduled per year. Schedules are flexible. The first classroom visit takes place during second half of October. A mentor is assigned to the same class for the duration of the school year. After the mentor’s visit, each child receives a copy of the book that was read aloud. That’s seven new titles for their home libraries.
