WELCOME A Note From The Board

It’s that time of the year where we often give thanks for the things that are important to us. The Downers Grove Park District would like to thank you—the Downers Grove community—for your continued support and participation in our programs, events, parks and facilities! Over the last several months, the Downers Grove Park District has been gathering valuable community feedback through a Community Needs Assessment. A summary of the state of the district is shared on pages 4 and 5. Using this data, the District is now in the process of developing a new Focus Forward Master Plan that will guide us in improving programs, parks and facilities to meet the recreational needs of the community over the next 10 years. To stay informed about the journey, visit www.dgpdfocusforward.com. Colder weather is quickly approaching, but there’s still plenty of indoor AND outdoor fun to be had at the Downers Grove Park District! Once the snow has fallen, try out ice skating, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and sledding offered at several park locations. For more information, see page 51. Spread some holiday cheer on December 9 with Merry & Bright: A Victorian Christmas event at the Downers Grove Museum (page 7). This free family event will celebrate the season with tours of the holiday-decorated Victorian Blodgett House, carolers, crafts and a visit from Santa and his reindeer! Have your own holiday decorations to show off? Compete in our Winter Wonderland Decorating Contest from December 9 to 11! See page 9 for details. Kids can stay busy and enjoy fun-filled days off from school with School’s Out Trips, Spring Break Trips, Spring Break Nature Camp and an Alpine Valley Ski Trip (pages 21, 45 and 53). Looking to stay fit over the winter months? Enjoy the indoor walking track at the Recreation Center—now free to all visitors. Achieve your health and fitness resolutions by becoming a member of 4500 Fitness! We hope you’ll join us indoors—and outdoors—for another fun-filled season!

FOR YOUR INPUT! A new vibrant plan for the future of the Downers Grove Park District will soon emerge as a result of input gathered from the community. Throughout the summer and fall, a Community Needs Assessment was conducted including community surveys, stakeholder interviews and a public open house. This input will assist in the development of the District’s new 10-Year Master Plan. The master plan will clearly define our route and guide us in improving programs, parks and facilities to meet the recreational needs of the community.

DOWNERS GROVE GOLF CLUB

The historic and treasured Downers Grove Golf Club holds a significant place in U.S. history. The golf course was established on this site in 1892 as the original Chicago Golf Club, when Charles Blair MacDonald, who was, according to Golf Journal, “a true and imposing pioneer of golf in America” persuaded thirty of his Chicago Club colleagues to contribute ten dollars each to design and construct a nine-hole golf course. Today, the Downers Grove Golf Club offers a unique and challenging course to the community and features a driving range with 24 permanent and turf hitting stations, a large practice putting green, sand trap and chipping area.
