RUM

RUM Rum has ancient origins. Drinks produced from fermented sugarcane first appeared in ancient India and China. Marco Polo recorded a “very good wine of sugar” offered to him in what is modern-day Iran. By 1640 the British, in search of a more profitable crop than tobacco or cotton were both producing good quality sugar and distilling the by-products. The drink produced was rough, a “hellish and terrible liquor”. It was said of those who drank it that it “laid them asleep on the ground”. Tradition suggests that these first rums originated in Barbados. A Barbadian document of 1651 reads, “The chief fuddling they make in the island is Rumbullion, alias Kill-Divil, and this is made of sugar canes distilled, a hot, hellish, and terrible liquor.” The word ‘rambunctious’ is probably derived from the drink too. By the early 1650s the name Rumbullion emerged, an English word from Devonshire. A similar name was Rummage, a word used for a ship’s hold, where rum would be stored during long journeys across the Atlantic. Rum has also been called Devil’s Death, Redeye, Demon Water, Rambunctious Pirate’s Drink and Rumbustion. The last of these is a 17thC word believed to have originated in the sugar plantations of Barbados. The name Nelson’s blood may have its origin in the story of the admiral’s body being transported home in a ‘cask of spirits’.
