Educator Spotlight: Cyndi Ristori

Athletic Training Education Program

For the first time, we have a tie for Educator of the Month. Cyndi Ristori has been named one of the Educators of the Month for July 2012. Abby Rivenburg, who nominated Cyndi for this recognition, has this to say about the education she provides:

felt like an awkward transition from the athletic field to the doctors office. Cyndi immediately found tasks for me to help her with, and included me/taught me

with every situation that came up. Before I knew it she had thrown me in the deep end and I was swimming on my own. Cyndi has always been approachable and encouraging, I wouldn't want to have done this rotation with anyone else.” Congratulations Cyndi and thank you for educating our students!

“Cyndi has been amazing from day one. The first day I came in, it

Educator Spotlight: Julia Shmurak Julia Shmurak has also been named Educator of the Month for July 2012. Tiffany Morton, who nominated Julia for this recognition, has this to say about the education she provides: “Julia is a first time Clinical Instructor (CI) this year but has gone above and beyond to help my learning. She has taken the time to learn the differences between athletic training

and physical therapy to better guide my learning. She has come up with great ways to facilitate learning. Every week we review a different joint's anatomy, stress test, palpations, and pathologies. We then focus on that for the week during rehab. She pushes me to be better giving out advice for practice and how to do better research. She stays after hours to answer my questions for the

day and if she can't find an answer we always research it. My experience has been exactly what I needed for rehab because of her. I hope that she remains a CI so many other students can benefit from her as much as I have.

Alumni Spotlight: Jessica Chester Jessica Chester graduated from the Athletic Training Education Program in 2011. She is the head athletic trainer for Coral Reef Senior High School. What is your favorite ATS memory? Jessica’s favorite athletic training memory is when her class got together and made a video for a national contest to help promote athletic training. “Even though we didn’t win, I think we still had the best video.” Her second

favorite moment was being able to throw a pie in Kari Riddle’s face for the Pie an ACI fundraiser sponsored by the Athletic Training Student Organization. What is the worst injury you have seen/treated? The worst injury Jessica has witnessed and treated was during her first week as a certified Athletic Trainer at Coral Reef where

she had two incidents of severe dehydration and had to initiate the emergency action plan stating, “I was able to keep a level head and treat the athletes as necessary until the paramedics arrived.” What advice would you give a current ATS? Jessica’s advice to current ATSs is “Don’t give up, it’s going to be hard, but stick with it...when you pass the BOC it’s going to be worth all the clinical hours, late night studying and early morning classes.”
