Goal:
To attain a better quality of life of the people of the Union of Myanmar by contributing to improved reproductive health status of women, men, adolescents and youth. It aims to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal 5 of improving maternal health with the targets of reducing maternal mortality by three quarters and achieving universal access to reproductive health by the year 2015.
General objectives:

Preventing and reducing reproductive tract infections (RTIs); sexuallytransmitted infections (STIs), including HIV; cervical cancer and other gynaecological morbidities; 4. Promoting sexual health;including adolescent reproductive health and male involvement. 1996
Strategic Approach: • Setting enabling environment; • Improving information base for decision making; • Strengthening health systems and capacity for delivery of reproductive health services; • Improving community and family practices.
MCH section The following activities have been implementing and strengthening in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 regarding maternal, newborn and child health. • Providing proper antenatal care • Promoting skilled and institutional delivery and post natal care y Expansion of post-abortion care and quality birth spacing services • Ensuring Emergency Obstetric Care • Providing Essential Newborn Care • Strengthening Adolescent Reproductive Health • Promoting male involvement in reproductive health • Focusing cervical cancer screening, early diagnosis and treatment • Establishing community health volunteer Promoting and referral system Women and Child Health Development The capacity building of professionals for providing optimum care for sick children in first referral units is an obvious path to optimize the benefits of IMNCI on child survival. Facility-based integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood illness (F-IMNCI) is a care package to train health care providers inmanaging newborn and childhood illnesses at the facility level/inpatientcare, providing the important link for care of the sick neonates and children reaching these facilities from primary health care level and the community. National AIDS Program Under National AIDS Program, 4 prongs of prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMCT) are being initiated since 2001 and have covered 253 townships and 38 hospitals including State and Regional hospitals in 2012. Multidisciplinary State/Regional PMTCT Training teams were formed and conducted Advocacy meetings, Township trainings, community mobilization at township level. In
order to achieve the global target of eliminating HIV transmission to new born and congenital syphilis, including prevention of RTI/STI, 4 prongs has been conducted through coordinated efforts of National AIDS Programme and related programmes under Department of Health such as Reproductive Health, Women and Child Health Development Programmes, National NGOs, International NGOs and related Ministries. Central Health Education Bureau The Ministry of Health is committed to promoting and maintaining the health status of youth through Youth Health Project in collaboration with related sectors. Improving access of youth to information and skills, improving the physical and social environment of youth and improving youth access to and use of services are set as main strategies. Youth friendly health services has been implementing in 28 townships including 10 new townships in 2012. Youth Information Corners (YIC) for reproductive health information have been opened in 71 townships and volunteers for reproductive health services called Community Support Group (CSG) appeared in 70 townships between 2003 to 2012. Planning Section Health System Strengthening Program operated with GAVI support covered 20 townships in 2012 and 60 townships up to 2013. The Goal of the Health System Strengthening Program in Myanmar is to achieve improved service delivery of essential components of Immunization, MCH, Nutrition, & Environmental Health by strengthening program coordination, health planning systems, and human resources management and development.

PSI Myanmar’s mission is to empower to people of Myanmar to live healthier lives by making health markets work for the poor. PSI Myanmar has operated under a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Health since 1999 and is delivering significant health impact in nearly all townships across the country. PSI’s work addresses six of the largest contributors to Myanmar’s burden of disease: HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, pneumonia, diarrheal disease and issues affecting reproductive health. The program also works to improve women’s access to family planning, providing an extensive range of shortand long-term contraceptive products. Complementing its nationwide network of private retail outlets distributing essential health products, PSI provides primary health services in over 200 townships through its ‘Sun’ network of approximately 1,500 private medical clinics (Sun Quality Health) and approximately 1,800 village health workers (Sun Primary Health). PSI’s Targeted Outreach Program operates 18 dropin centres nationwide, providing counselling and clinical services to populations most at risk of HIV. To ensure programs are relevant and sustainable, PSI develops strong public/private partnerships, coordinating its work closely with the Ministry of Health and local departments of health in all aspects of its work.
