Horn’s appointment followed a six-month search by the board that came to

Horn has been working closely with the seminary’s current administration to ensure a smooth transition. An installation service is being planned for August 28. Horn has asked that the service be held to accommodate the members of Fourth Baptist Church rather than the members of the academic community. C entral Seminary’s 2011 commencement was a memorable day in the history of the institution. Nineteen graduates received their degrees, and three unique highlights crowned the awarding of diplomas. First, father and son Dennis and Troy Campbell both received their D.Min. degrees. Second, Gelu Pacurar was awarded the first Ph.D. earned by a faculty member of our Romanian campus. Finally, Dr. Thomas Zempel was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities, having served with distinction in various roles at Central Seminary for fifteen years. At the conclusion of the ceremony, Dr. Kevin Bauder announced that on Friday evening the full board of trustees had issued a unanimous invitation for Dr. Sam Horn to become the next president of Central

Seminary. With great enthusiasm under the leading of the Lord, Dr. Horn accepted that invitation. Dr. Horn was invited to the platform to give a few words of greeting and to conclude the service in benediction. 

MacDonald Lectures Series and Pastors’ Day C entral

Seminary hosted its annual MacDonald Lectures Series and Pastors’ Day on February 7–8. This year’s guest lecturer was Dr. Bill Edmondson, a Baptist MidMissions church planter in Boston. The theme of the sessions was “Mission to Great Cities: A WorldClass Initiative.” Dr. Edmondson presented his “conviction that a global c h u rc h p l a n t i ng movement is the consistent, natural, and essential outworking of an orthodox faith.” He is particularly convinced that this mission must utilize the strategic potential of cities. Cities offer two advantages for the cause of world evangelism: mobile academic communities (“the thousands of international students who flow in and out of

Western colleges and universities on a yearly basis”) and immigrant communities (the vast majority of whom live in cities).

Friends and Family Banquet Sets New Records Central Seminary has now

hosted its annual Friends and Family Banquet for more than a decade, and this year’s banquet set new records both for the number of guests and the support raised for the seminary. Over 370 friends of the

seminary gathered for the banquet, and after the meal the evening’s program highlighted the graduates of Central Seminary who have served in military

chaplaincy. Dr. Kevin Bauder narrated a slide show of pictures of our chaplains, who have served in multiple branches of service. The presentation culminated by recounting the story of Dale Goetz, a faithful Army chaplain who became the first chaplain killed in action since the Vietnam War. At the conclusion of Dr. Bauder’s presentation, current M.Div. student Matthew Pilch talked about his plans for pursuing the chaplaincy. The evening’s giving was encouraged by a pair of generous lead gifts: one for $50,000 and another for $35,000. When the gifts and pledges were all counted, the banquet had raised over $125,000 for the seminary. 

books, a library is also a place where history is preserved. Recently, when Pillsbury Baptist Bible College closed, its board needed a place to store some of its history—mostly records and pictures. They asked Central Seminary to help. We gladly accepted the materials and decided that a number of important pictures from

Pillsbury would be displayed in the seminary library. Jon Pratt and his father Ray, both Central Seminary graduates and deeply connected with Pillsbury, were commissioned to arrange the memorial. The wall features the portraits of the former presidents as well as some interesting photos of the campus and student body. The display is open to the public during regular library hours. 

Sam Horn Appointed As President (cont. from p. 1) four other men who preceded have set. I believe that the single me and hope to strive to live by most important message we can God’s grace in the example they send is that we must have God’s rich blessing on our seminary. No giftedness, academic preparation, or personal charisma will be sufficient to lead the seminary forward. I most need, in my life personally and my ministry at Central and Fourth, the hand of God on my life. And I believe that the most m e a n i n g f u l wa y t o express this publicly is

to have an installation service that focuses attention on my need for this.” As the new president sees it, the best way of doing this is to hold “the installation service as a service of Fourth Baptist where the church and the seminary staff commend this ministry to the Lord and to His care. It would be most meaningful to me to have the deacons and pastors of Fourth and the former presidents and faculty of Fourth lay hands on me and beseech God for His grace, wisdom, power, and enablement.” 

Alumni Focus: Dan Miller Shortly before completing his

first degree at Central Seminary, Dan Miller (M.Div., 1990; Th.M., 1998) accepted the call to be pastor of Burnsville Baptist Church (renamed Eden Baptist Church in 1996). Twenty-one years later Miller sees the gracious hand of God providentially working to grow and deepen the church through significant trials and

challenges. God has permitted Dan to use the ministry tools received at Central Seminary as an adjunct professor at Central (1998–2005), as a police chaplain in Savage, while leading a Bible study at the Scott County jail, and in training pastors in India, Lithuania, Zambia, and Mozambique.

Dan credits his educational experience at Central Seminary for providing exegetical skills, theological moorings, and biblical local church emphases which have enabled him to serve the church effectively. In June, Dan and Beth celebrated 25 years of marriage. They have been blessed with four children: Ethan (17), Levi (15), Reed (13), and Whitney (12). 

Dan Miller Lectures on Church Discipline E ach

seme ster, Central Seminary sets aside a week of chapels for a professor or pastor to lecture on an area of interest. The spring semester’s lectures were delivered by Pastor Dan Miller of Eden Baptist Church. His sessions dealt with the topic of church discipline. Miller ’s addresses aimed to help students understand both why church discipline is important and how it is carried out. He argued that discipline is a normal and necessary aspect of discipleship. He surveyed the historic practice of church discipline among Baptist churches, then drew upon a biblical ecclesiology for help in defining the culture of the

local church. Miller particularly stressed that discipline grows out of the nature of a local church as a covenanting body. Naturally, Miller drew upon many years of pastoral experience to enrich and illustrate the lectures. Just as importantly, his work was informed by his recent doctoral research for Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. The result was a highly profitable and instructive discussion. Audio files of Miller’s lectures can be found on the Central Seminary website. They can be downloaded by following the links under “resources.” 
