Sri Shiva Stuti – Lord Krishna - Kurma Puranam ||

The following is a prayer by Lord Krishna on Lord Shiva at Mount Kailash seeking a son who is equivalent to but devotee of Lord Shiva. This hymn is found in Sri Kurma Puranam, Shat Sahasra Samhita, Chapter 24. The same story appears in Hari Vamsha Purana, the last canto of Mahabharata epic, though the same hymn does not appear. Though the hymn is comprised of only the first 17 shlokas, the subsequent verses (until the end of the chapter) are also given here in the form of Uttara Pitika (Epilog) in order to provide continuity of the story. Further, it contains mutual dialog between Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva which underlies the non-duality of both : 

At the end of the penance and hymn, Lord Shiva asks Lord Krishna, “O! Pundarikaksha! Why did you have to do this penance? You indeed are the bestower of all boons and are the one who fulfills the wishes of one and all. You indeed are the Parama Murti of my name Narayana! There is nothing which is unattainable by you. You know yourselves through your Yoga that You indeed are Narayana, Parameshvara, Mahadeva and Mahayogi”

Lord Krishna replies looking at Devi Parvati, “O! Prabhu Shankar! You also are the knower of everything through your yoga. I wish for a son who is equivalent to you but who will be your devotee. Please fulfill my wishes”. Pleased, Lord Shiva said, “tathAstu (be it so)”.

Devi Parvati tells Hrishikesha, “O! Acyuta! Kehsava! Vatsa! I am aware of your immutable devotion to Lord Shankar and myself. You indeed are the Sarvatma Narayana. You are born in the womb of Devaki at the request of Devas. Please look at your Atma Rupa and immaculate Pada. There is no difference between us. Learned people see both of us as one form. Please accept the boons given by Lord Shiva and may you get knowledge related to Parameshwar, unflinching devotion to Lord Shiva!” Lord Krishna bows his head and accepts the boons and wishes of both Lord Shiva and Parvati. Lord Shiva holds the hand of Krishna and goes inside Mount Kailash.
