LED lighting that is ENERGY STAR rated can use 75% less energy and last 25 times longer than traditional incandescent light bulbs.

Instead of using your dishwasher’s drying cycle, let your dishes air dry. This can cut energy by 15-50%.

Shortening your shower by just a minute or two can be the equivalent of saving 150 gallons of water per month.

Reno’s residents and businesses can join Mayor Schieve by going to MyWaterPledge.com and stand up by reducing water waste.

Takes about 6 weeks to manufacture, fill, sell, recycle, and then remanufacture an aluminum beverage can.

Set your thermostat to warm, as comfortably as possible during hot days. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your bill will be.

Turn down your water heater temperature in the summer. Setting it to 120oF can save energy. Warm days can already heat up the water inside.

Install faucet aerators. These small devices “inject” air into tap water as it comes out of the faucet, using a fraction of water without disturbing the flow rate.

Turn off the water while you brush your teeth and save up to 4 gallons a minute. That’s up to 200 gallons a week for a family of four.

Use a layer of organic mulch on the surface of your planting beds to minimize weed growth that competes for water.

406

MEGATONS OF CO2

By reducing 1% of our waste per year by recycling and composting 90% of our discards by 2030, we could save 406 megatons of carbon dioxide every 15 year.

GALLONS

Save water by using the garbage disposal sparingly. Instead, compost vegetable food waste.

16

Hang clothes outside to dry when you can. This saves energy otherwise spent on the dryer.

17

Use power strips instead of outlets, and turn off the power strips when not in use to conserve energy.

Have a leaky faucet? Fixing leaky faucets can use about 140 gallons of water per week if ignored.

18

To reduce the need for air-conditioning, keep your shutters or blinds closed on hot days and air your home after dark.

EARTH DAY Recycling saves 3-5 times the energy that waste incinerator power plants generate.

OF WATER

30% Going on vacation? Turn off your water heater if you plan on leaving home for a few days. Most models will reheat the water to the set temperature in about an hour.

23

Use wool or rubber dryer balls will help separate your clothes and get more air to them. The wool balls absorb some moisture, further cutting drying time.

24

Use the high-speed or extended spin cycle in the washer. This will remove as much moisture as possible before drying, reducing the time it needs to be in the dryer.

25

ON COSTS

Invest in a programmable thermostat in your home. This addition can save as much as 30% on heating and cooling costs.

Use microwaves and toaster ovens to cook or warm leftovers. You’ll use less energy than cooking with a conventional oven.

27

SAVE

20-30% Clean or replace all filters in your home once a month. Dirty filters make your system work harder and run longer than necessary.

29

ON THE AIR MOVEMENT

Insulate heating ducts. In a typical house 2030% of the air moving through the duct system is lost due to leaks.
