Abstract The aim of this study is to verify if there is an influence of the presence or the absence of segmental string on the perception of f0 variations in Brazilian Portuguese. For this we conducted two perception tests, which contained variations from 0 to 4 rising semitones with or without segmental sequence. The tests were composed of 30 stimuli divided into 15 with the segmental string, and 15 without it. For the stimuli without segmental string, the intonation was represented by a musical instrument. To extract the sound sequence from the original signal in .wav, we created a MIDI version of the f0 variations, using the application Exprosodia Automatic Analysis of Speech. A target word was manipulated in each sentence on the initial syllable. Eighteen subjects of both sexes participated in the experiments. The results point out that the upward variations of f0 are most noticeable in the absence of segmental string. Without segmental string, the chi-square test (P> 0.05) showed that variations of one rising semitone are perceived by the subjects. When each category is separated (rising variations in semitones) in both tests, i.e with and without segmental sequence, the chi-square test showed that significant results were obtained when there was the variation of a semitone, with P Fc (5.19) and P
