MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF CENTRAL BAPTIST CHURCH SEPTEMBER 2015

Up Front Developing a Grateful Heart My devotions today were a reminder to develop a grateful heart. We are to be grateful that God, through the power of the Holy Spirit helps us experience his love, speaks to us, and desires to work through us in the work he does in the world. When we spend even just a few minutes contemplating all that God is and all that we receive through him, gratefulness should easily flow through our lives. This week it has also led me to see many things around me with a grateful heart, often times it is the way I see God at work in the lives of all of you. This month especially, Josh and I are grateful that you provide a business administrator for us. He takes so many things off our list demanding our attention each week. We don’t usually have to respond immediately to queries like: have you seen the sink hole in the parking lot, can you check out the smell around the dish machine,

is there any way to get it a little warmer in the building, and so many more. By the time you read this, Dave should be well on the way to recovery and handling these things again soon. And we will still be grateful. I am so grateful for all the ways people quietly go about using the gifts God gave them to care for the church and care for people all around them. On a Saturday morning you might encounter someone detailing the van, mowing the lawn, trimming the bushes, changing light bulbs, not to be noticed but to use the gifts God gave them. At other times, you may see someone meeting an electrician in New Berlin, replacing a light sensor, watering a pot of flowers or picking up trash on the grounds. Someone will deliver meals to a friend who is sick or take someone grocery shopping. Others help a child check out a book at the school library, work in the community garden and share the produce with others, and deliver meals to a shelter. (Continued on page 2)

SEPTEMBER 2015 - PAGE 2

From Guideposts: Three Books in the Church Choir Mysteries Series

After Brendan King's life spiraled to rock bottom, the teen found hope in a new relationship with Christ while serving time in a juvenile penitentiary. Recently released from prison, Brendan finds solace in the foster home of a couple struggling with suppressed grief. As the city-bred teen enrolls at a suburban high school, he finds support from a group of believers. Yet the bonds of his old way of life and the gang that wants to know where he hid their stash on a long-ago night are strong. In his darkest moment, Brendan found faith. Now he must decide if it’s worth the price to hold on to it.

Each book transports you to smalltown America, a world of front porches, choir practice, church suppers...and a place where dastardly deeds keep Grace Parks and her choir from rehearsals! You will keep turning the pages as you join Gracie and her adorable cat, Gooseberry as she fearlessly solves mysteries threatening her church.

The Highly Suspicious Halo by Eileen M. Berger

The three titles in the series are as follows:

The Comatose Cat by Sandy Dengler

These books may be found on the New Book Rack in the Library. Jim Filler On behalf of the Volunteer Library Team

This DVD may be found in the Video Section of the Library. (2013. PG-13, 108 minutes, 4.6 out of 5 Amazon Rating)

Up Front

The Coin Conspiracy by Eileen M. Berger

(Continued)

The phone is dialed to encourage a friend, a note is written to someone who is sad and a visit is made to the rehab facility. A check is written to provide Bibles for Nicaragua, In these ways and so many more I am grateful for the ways you live out our mission to Love God Love People and Serve the World.

I am grateful to you for making that possible and to my colleagues and coworkers, Josh, Robert, Tricia, and Nita who took care of things in my absence.

I conclude this article as I return from being out of the office for a couple of weeks of vacation. And I am grateful for the time I had to invest in my family to do some of the things there is never time to do in an average week.

Together in Christ,

Have a wonderful month and keep developing a grateful heart!

Children’s House Happy September! Children are back in school now and everyone is getting into their old routines now that summer has ended. As you get caught up in the routine, do not lose track of what is important – your primary relationship. Make a commitment to be intentional about your marriage/ relationship so that you do not take your partner for granted. Here is an article on Why Couples Can't Coast: An expert warns of the perils of living on autopilot. In the article, Dr. Amodeo states, “Relationships get off track when we take them for granted and neglect to nurture them with “fondness and admiration” (as John Gottman puts it), enjoyable activities, and ongoing communication about what’s working well and what isn’t feeling so good. Finding a balance—a middle path between avoiding issues and overdramatizing them— we can continually nurture the love and intimacy we desire.” UIS counseling intern Michelle Davidson is back for her final semester and is accepting new clients. Michelle is working on her master’s degree in Human Development Counseling and will see clients free of charge in exchange for the educational experience. This offer is open to all church and community members. Feel free to tell your friends and neighbors! To schedule an appointment with Michelle, call Stephani at 217-972-4851. Michelle would like to plan groups and events for her final semester, so please be on the lookout for announcements as plans are finalized.

Everyone is settling nicely into their new classrooms. We are all set for a new beginning in the school year. A themed spirit week will be held later this month to help celebrate a new school year here at Children’s House. Each day will be themed and the sights and sounds will fill the halls. School pictures will also be taken this month. Chapel will begin this month and is always a favorite among the classrooms. Chapel time is held twice monthly in the church sanctuary. Members and staff of Central Baptist Church share bible messages and songs. The children really enjoy the time spent at chapel. This month we wish Ms. McKenna good luck as she begins a new journey. McKenna has shared her talents with us since 2007. We consider ourselves blessed to have had McKenna apart of our staff for 8 years. She began teaching in the summer program and then four years ago became the full time cook. Thank you McKenna for your years of service as we pray for blessings on your new journey.

Inside News Graham Library Volunteers Throughout the year, Graham Elementary students rely on a team of volunteers to ensure they will be able to check out library books from their school. Members from Central Baptist Church have been critical in this and more volunteers are needed. If you would like to help out, please contact Barb McKean ([email protected]). 2014-15 volunteers pictured below.

Visitor’s Info and FAQ

SEPTEMBER 2015 - PAGE 8

We are one church in two locations, with campuses in Springfield and New Berlin, IL. Together, we are a church family loving God, loving people, and serving the world in Jesus’ name. All are welcome to worship with us. We gather each Sunday to love God in worship at our Springfield Campus (located at 501 South 4th Street, Springfield, IL) at 8:30 am and 11:00 am, and at our New Berlin Campus (located at 600 W Birch Street, New Berlin, IL) at 5:00 pm. When you visit our church you are our guest. Our members and regular worshipers participate in a financial offering during the worship services, but this is not expected of our guests. Our desire is to be a church that helps people know and experience God in a meaningful way. If there is anything that we can do to help you on your life and faith journey, please let us know. Where Can I Park? The Springfield campus parking lot is smaller, however additional parking is available along the street (4th street and on Jackson), in the Illinois Bar Association’s parking lot on East Jackson Street, and in the parking lot across from the Illinois National Bank building on South 4th Street between East Capital Avenue and East Jackson Street. (This latter lot will be easy to see, diagonally across from the front of the church as you arrive). Is Childcare Available? Our nurseries located on the first floor of the building. Our well trained and experienced child care workers and paid staff are eager to care for and spend time with children. We also have Sunday School classes (beginning at 9:45) available for Pre-K children through high school students at our Springfield campus. Classes meet on the second and third floors. What Should I Wear? There is no dress code at Central. Wear what makes you feel comfortable and to be who you are. Our 8:30 AM worship service in Springfield is a traditional service. The attendees generally wear business casual attire. Our 11 AM worship service in Springfield and 5 PM worship service in New Berlin are both contemporary worship services and most people dress casually. We only ask that you turn your cell phone off or set it to vibrate. What Kind of Music Can I Expect? In Springfield, the 8:30 AM service music is lead by our Chancel Choir and designed to connect you with God through rich traditions of hymns, songs, scripture and prayer. Our contemporary service at 11 AM is led by our worship band and features modern worship music. There is a high-energy, celebratory feel to the service and participation is encouraged and expected. Whether we are clapping, singing, reflecting, or listening, our focus in only on Jesus. New Berlin also has a contemporary service at 5 PM and is led by our worship band and features modern worship music. We provide a weekly podcast of the sermon or teaching message each week. If you feel gifted and called to serve in worship ministry, please contact our Worship Arts Director, Robert Reynolds. Some examples of ways to serve in worship ministry include singing with the worship band or choir, playing an instrument, reading Scripture, volunteering as an usher, running sound and/or media, etc.
