“THE ARTIST’S JOB IS TO BE WITNESS TO HIS TIME IN HISTORY.” Robert Rauschenberg
What an interesting year to program a film festival! At a pre-Sundance conference I recently attended, the keynote speaker reminded the audience of about 600 film programmers that artists are the catalysts of change, not the politicians. And that it is the responsibility of arthouse theatre owners and film festival organizers to bring their respective communities meaningful films that will inspire, educate and entertain. It can be a challenge to find a good movie these days among the action-packed superhero prequels, sequels and sequels of sequels…and that’s where we come in!
MOVIE MOGUL PASS Full access pass allows admission for one person to all regular Festival screenings, receptions, Festival VIP Tent, workshops, and special events. This pass also includes complimentary wine tasting at participating SLO County wineries (see listing at slofilmfest.org). $300

David has never had a best friend, but Buddy, a 10-month-old golden retriever, is about to change all that. This touching film captures their respective journeys as both boy and dog learn and grow together, thanks to Patty Dobbs Gross, a pioneer in the field of breeding and training autism-assistant dogs. 58 min. Visual artist Leonard “Porkchop” Zimmerman could have given in to the darkness following the untimely passing of his partner, Brian. Instead he chose to channel his grief into art, creating numerous paintings of whimsical robots. An estimated 9.1 million Americans served in the military during the Vietnam War (1964-1975). The most controversial war in American history, it spurred protests and anti-military sentiment long after the veterans returned home. Many still struggle; many, though, have come to terms with this pain. The Journey Home explores how Vietnam veterans, representing communities from around the country, have been able to reconcile and heal from their treatment fifty years ago. In turn, it shows how protestors to the war have come to see it was unfair and cruel to take out their anger with the government on the service men and women who only did what they believed to be their patriotic duty. 65 min. During the ’60s and early ’70s many young Americans, fleeing the Vietnam War, looked to their neighbors to the north for refuge. Not only did these so-called “hippy draft dodgers” find Canada, some of them accidentally found their way to Lund, BC. Mostly raised in cities, with no wilderness experience, this eclectic group of “back to the landers,” dreamers, artists, intellectuals and freedom fighters created a society they wanted to be part of. They experimented with drugs, shared lovers… and subsequent children. The Syrian civil war has created one of the greatest humanitarian crises in the last 60 years, fittingly described as a “complete meltdown of humanity.” Over 400,000 Syrians have been killed, more than 7 million have been internally displaced and more than 4,800,000 are refugees. Turkey has taken in more than 2,700,000 refugees, Germany more than 600,000. How many has the US taken in? Should we even allow refugees into our country? “Refugees: Enemies or Victims?” investigates the very important questions of whether the United States is doing enough to uphold its long tradition of helping those in need. 50 min. “Signs of Humanity” is a documentary film that explores the interrelated themes of home, homelessness, compassion and humanity. Artist and professor Willie Baronet has purchased more than 1,000 homeless signs over the past 22 years, and he uses this collection to create installations to raise awareness about homelessness. During the month of July 2014, Willie and three filmmakers drove across the country, interviewing people on the street and purchasing their signs. Compassionate and respectful, Willie interviews over 100 people, buys 275 signs, and exposes the human side of homelessness by asking, “What does home mean to you?” 62 min. USA.

Set in the 1500’s, Gosuke, a steel apprentice in the Japanese village of Tatara, desires to become a samurai. He is accepted by the regional lord master, but soon learns he doesn’t have the internal spirit for samurai and decides to return to his beloved village, famous for its steel production. Made in Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai” tradition, Japanese director Yoshinari Nishikori has cleverly crafted both a dramatic, spiritual narrative and an historical presentation of ancient steel and sword making. This spectacular film documents the entire process of “tamahagane” (smelting steel from earth) and “tatara” (forging that steel into beautiful Japanese swords). Drama. 135 min. Japan.
