Software as a Service (SaaS) Definition and characteristics

www.scheidt-bachmann.com

Definition of SaaS • Running your software out of a cloud or “On demand software” • Software and its associated data are hosted centrally • Access using a web browser over the Internet

© Scheidt & Bachmann GmbH 2011

• Concept dates back to the 1960s from centralized hosting of business applications for computing power and database storage • 1990s brought Application Service Providers (ASP), hosting and managing specialized business applications

www.scheidt-bachmann.com

Main characteristics • Managing and hosting third-party independent software and own software • Predominantly web-based solutions, only require an internet browser, location- and time-independent use

© Scheidt & Bachmann GmbH 2011

• Multi-tenant architecture, to serve multiple businesses and users • Scalable licensing models • Data storage at the SaaS vendor

www.scheidt-bachmann.com

SaaS business applications

© Scheidt & Bachmann GmbH 2011

• Accounting • Collaboration • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) • Enterprise Resourcing Planning (ERP) • Invoicing • Human Resource Management (HRM) • Counting Management • Service Desk Management

www.scheidt-bachmann.com

SaaS opportunities for car parking • Highly available IT infrastructure • Outsourcing of IT relevant tasks like maintenance, OS updates, backups • Centralized and always up to date infrastructure • Shift of responsibilities (IT hardware) to a service provider

© Scheidt & Bachmann GmbH 2011

• Low investment costs, no need for special on site infrastructure such as server rooms, etc. • Software maintenance, benefit from latest entervo software versions • Benefit from faster project implementation / easier extensions www.scheidt-bachmann.com

Developments in Parking Traditional approach

www.scheidt-bachmann.com

Case Study Zaventem Airport (traditional) • Characteristics – Physical servers in each car park – Native PMS installations

• Strategy – Reduce dependency on networks – Ensure local, independent operations

• Benefits

© Scheidt & Bachmann GmbH 2011

– No single point of failure – Lower dependency on network

• Risks – Difficulty to ensure proper server environment – Backup concepts remain complex – Software maintenance very time consuming www.scheidt-bachmann.com
