Spring 2016
Dear Colleague, The team at BioAccel is pleased to invite you to sponsor our 2016 Solutions Challenge Competition – “Reinventing the Future of Health!” This packet provides information about our available sponsorships. Contributions support BioAccel programs and services supporting biomedical innovation, health care, and state and regional economic vitality. Solutions Challenge will be held on Thursday, December 1 at Phoenix Theatre, Powered by Arizona Board of Regents and Presented by Sinfonía RX. Our thrilling Scorpion Pit Competition will be held during the afternoon (1:00p.m. to 4:30p.m.) followed by a hosted award reception and celebration from 4:30p.m. to 6:30p.m. when our funded biomedical company finalists will be announced! The evening will conclude with a festive, hosted closing reception from 6:30p.m. to 8:00p.m. A nonprofit organization founded in 2009, BioAccel has made a significant impact in creating an ecosystem of biomedical innovation, helping to launch 17 early-stage biomedical companies in Greater Phoenix that otherwise might not exist today. Solutions Challenge sponsorships help BioAccel provide training, mentoring and early-stage funding for bioscience entrepreneurs and their companies – improving health, creating jobs, and advancing bioscience innovation. For the first time this year, BioAccel created a “Solutions Challenge 2016 University Roadshow” to showcase both student and faculty presentations from every public and private university in Arizona, as well as in several biomedical-focused universities in Southern California, where biomedical and entrepreneur programs are delivered. Student teams were invited to compete in our Solutions Challenge 2016 as well as form interdisciplinary teams to include bioengineering, clinical and business disciplines. Please review the enclosed and do not hesitate to contact us if additional information is needed. With warmest regards,

About Solutions Challenge
The Solutions Challenge is an annual competition designed to better align market needs with innovation and early investment to stimulate company formation in novel biomedical technology. The competition collaborates with healthcare leadership to identify critical healthcare and market needs, then challenges entrepreneurs to create innovative solutions to address them. Finalists must convince at least one “Scorpion Pit” investor, during a pitch-day event, to provide up to $50,000 in private funding that BioAccel will match with additional financial support. Successful projects will have up to $100,000 in proof-of-concept dollars to advance the technology that addresses these unmet healthcare needs. BioAccel’s Solutions Challenge competition supports Arizona’s biomedical entrepreneur climate and advances our mission, to: • Improve health care through innovation. • Provide early-stage start-up funding, mentorship and training for biomedical device and technology entrepreneurs. • Diversify economic growth in Arizona and our region. With your help last year, BioAccel’s inspiring competitive process led to dozens of entrepreneur and student biotechnology business entries and ultimately, seven finalists including two student teams vying for entrepreneurial start-up funding in the Scorpion Pit competition. Modeled after American TV’s Shark Tank, the Scorpion Pit competition was held at The Croft venue in downtown Phoenix. Finalists were given 10 minutes to pitch their concepts followed by an onslaught of questions from partnering local investors called the “Scorpions.” In 2015, TinyKicks and Omni BioCeutical Innovations emerged as Solutions Challenge winners, receiving a total of $135,000 in early-stage funding. Two student entrepreneur teams each won $15,000, and a young entrepreneur won $600.
Based in metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona, BioAccel accelerates the development of new companies and biomedical products by providing entrepreneurs with the training, mentoring, and support they need to succeed in one of the most heavily regulated and strategically important industries: Biomedical technology.
About BioAccel
As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to bioscience economic training and entrepreneur support, BioAccel facilitates a company’s movement from discovery to development and into the marketplace. By using philanthropy rather than traditional venture funding, BioAccel has developed an innovative approach to funding and serves as a promising model for organizations dedicated to technology-driven economic development. We help entrepreneurs address the bioscience industry gap known as the “Valley of Death,” when entrepreneurs face profound resource deficiencies in the proof-of-business concept, lacking pre-seed funding capacity and access to ongoing business and technical support. BioAccel has helped launch 17 bioscience companies in Arizona, and this portfolio is growing. Our training and mentoring programs are designed to accelerate the translation of novel scientific advances and discoveries into commercially viable products and devices that specifically improve patient care and advance public health.
Through the integration of science and business, BioAccel is helping entrepreneurs reach their potential and advance Arizona. BioAccel has created jobs paying an average salary of $71,500, compared to Arizona median household wages of $55,000 and average salary of $44,000. Every dollar invested in BioInspire, Arizona’s first medical device incubator partnered by BioAccel and City of Peoria, has attracted 6.5 times more in private sector capital. As Arizona continues to establish itself as a nationally bio-driven economy, it’s imperative that BioAccel continue to address the critical factors required for success. These include access to technology, financial capital, talent and retaining a long-term perspective.
