July 2013

Dear Friend, As a physician, I know how devastating it is for patients to learn they have multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer. Most people have never heard of it, and many patients have been incorrectly diagnosed with other illnesses before myeloma is ultimately identified. When families learn the disease is incurable and requires arduous treatments, such as stem cell transplants, they are understandably distraught. At IU, our team of physician scientists and nurses want to help alleviate this burden. So, in 2001, we created an annual dinner and research symposium for myeloma patients and their families. All patients and their families are invited to attend, free of charge. The goal of the dinner and symposium is to provide HOPE and SUPPORT. We accomplish that in two ways. First, we bring together patients and families so they can create support networks and interact patient to patient and caregiver to caregiver. Second, we share research updates with patients so they are assured that, though their disease is rare, research is being conducted aimed at better understanding myeloma and – most importantly – how we can cure it. The primary source of funding for our annual dinner has always been gifts from pharmaceutical companies. Unfortunately, strict government guidelines now prevent those companies from being as generous as they would like to be. To help us continue providing this important event at no cost to myeloma patients and their families, we ask that you consider sponsoring the event. Gifts can be made by companies or individuals and can be designated as honoring or remembering someone you love. All donations are 100% tax deductible. Crimson Sponsor - $500 Crimson Sponsors will be recognized on the screens behind the podium, table signage, buffet line signage and in the printed dinner program. Crimson sponsors will also be verbally acknowledged from the podium. Cream Sponsor - $350 Cream Sponsors will be recognized on the screens behind the podium, on table signage and in the printed dinner program. To make a gift to support the dinner, please make your check payable to “Indiana University” and note “Myeloma Dinner” in the memo line. Please return it with the attached form to: IU Simon Cancer Center Attn: Chasity Spears 535 Barnhill Drive, Room 455 Indianapolis, IN 46202 Thank you for helping us bring hope and support to myeloma patients and their families.
