History of Grafton Library The idea for a library in Grafton originated in 1954—59 years ago! A 22-member library committee was formed representing many different groups in town, such as St. Joseph’s, St. Paul’s, the Lion’s Club, the American Legion Auxiliary , a Parent-Teachers Group, and the Women’s Club. A book drive in 1955 netted over 2,500 books — and that was the start of the library. On April 17, 1956, the doors to the Grafton Public Library officially opened at 1110 Bridge Street, the former site of the Grafton movie theater. As Grafton grew, the increasing number of people visiting the library necessitated a larger facility. Thanks to fundraising by residents and by a group called GOLD (Grafton Organization for Library Donations), our current, spacious library at 1620 11th Avenue could be built. The new library opened there in July of1989. Grafton Library now owns over 84,000 items. At first, the adult and children’s libraries were combined on the main level. In 2000, the lower level was remodeled to house a separate children’s library.
