Springfield Ski Trip, Champoluc, Italy In February half term some of our Year 9 pupils along with Springfield teachers visited Champoluc in Italy for the annual Springfield Ski Trip. It was a great trip once again which saw some skiing novices become confident skiers! Mr Lomas, Head of Enterprise and PDL
“I have never been skiing before so it was difficult at first to keep up with my group. However, by the end of the week I could ski with the rest of my group and instructor. I would recommend the ski trip because I improved a lot and learnt to ski.” Ella Williams, 9L “A lot of us were beginners who had never skied before so it was an amazing experience. It was a once in a life time opportunity!” Amber Mellish, 9S
“My favourite part was the skiing itself; it was thrilling, exciting, exhilarating and fun. Everyone should try it! The pizza night was the best food and I enjoyed the karaoke too.” Alex Adams, 9G “I started as a total beginner and by the second day I was skiing very fast down red runs. By the end of the week my instructor was struggling to keep up with me!” Sam Carter, 9S “I found it exciting and fun.” Ben Hayward, 9N

On Saturday 4th March we took five groups of Year 10s for their first expedition exercise in the local area. Students had the opportunity to put all the skills learnt in period 6 sessions to the test. Following a very muddy walk and the loss of a map (which was later found) all groups managed to navigate successfully back to school. We will be going on the practice expedition on 6th and 7th May. Congratulations to the Year 11 pupils Kira Wilmot, 11E, Zoe Bowbrick, 11P, Anna Merel, 11P, Lewis Wells, 11L, Ashley Bone, 11E, Daniel Claydon, 11F, Daisy Brown, 11G, Sabine Newman, 11P, Stuart McConnachie, 11N and Jack White, 11D who have all achieved their Bronze DofE Awards. We look forward to the other team members following suit.

SOUNDSATIONAL
A group of Springfield students was selected to perform at the annual 'Soundsational' music concert held at the Portsmouth Guildhall on 15th March 2017. Many were GCSE music students who had been practising tirelessly prior to the event (in and out of lesson time). They played two pieces as a rock band. One was a song by Guns n' Roses and the other was a piece by the Britpop band Oasis. Everyone rose to the challenge of performing on the Guildhall stage in front of a large audience and really enjoyed themselves whilst doing so. The concert also included items performed by other schools in the Portsmouth area, with a few from local colleges including some ex-Springfield students! The concert programme ended with three songs sung by a large, massed choir including Springfield singers and those from other Portsmouth schools. This event was an exceptional success and showed the hard work and dedication of our school choir in learning the pieces so well. Their professionalism was very impressive. Well done to all of the students involved. Ryan Rahimikia, 10E

BELGIUM TRIP
Early on Friday 17th March we set off for our journey to Northern France and Belgium. After a smooth ferry ride to France, we drove to Vimy Ridge, a site that France gave to Canada after the war so they can preserve the legacy of the Canadian soldiers who fought and died. After a very interesting tour through the tunnels and trenches by our Canadian tour-guide, we made our way to the hotel in Langemark. The next morning we left for a packed day of learning. First we visited Tyne Cot, a cemetery for the soldiers of the Commonwealth who died in World War 1 (WW1). We all found Tyne Cot very moving as there are over 11,000 graves there, with over 8,000 of them belonging to unknown soldiers. After Tyne Cot we drove to Langemark cemetery, where there are many mass graves for the German soldiers from WW1. We then visited Passchendaele Museum; where we were able to see many WW1 artefacts and walk through the recreated dugouts and trenches. At Sanctuary Woods, which we visited next, we changed into our wellies and explored the (very!) muddy trenches. After that, we went into Ypres, where we walked through the ‘In Flanders Fields’ museum and climbed the bell tower - the views from the top made the tiring walk up the 231 steps well worth it! The next stop was Essex Farm cemetery, where John McCrae wrote ‘In Flanders Fields’ and we saw the graves of a 15 year old and a Victoria Cross recipient. Later on we drove back into Ypres in order to watch the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate; it is performed every evening and it was incredible to be able to honour the soldiers. On the Sunday morning we commenced our journey home. We visited two V2 missile launch sites (La Coupole and the Blockhaus d’Eperlecques) on the way. These were very interesting as we were able to see the huge bunkers that were built, but never used. We all had a really great trip to Belgium, and that was all thanks to Mr Walters, Miss Payne, Mrs Evans, Mr Williams, and our great driver, Keith. School Life Families will share the school's disappointment that, after many decades of service, the swimming pool has had to be closed. The decision has not been taken lightly; governors have always been mindful of the number of people in the community who have enjoyed using this resource. However, the age of the building and very high cost of essential repairs and on-going maintenance has rendered the pool non-viable. That being said, the school has been working with Portsmouth City Council to secure funding that will both expand the school to provide much needed secondary school places to local children and improve the resources available to existing pupils in the school. Plans for the summer include converting the pool to a sports hall and the balcony area to a fitness/learning area. In addition, connecting corridors will be integrated into the first and second floors of B-Block and additional pupil toilets will be installed. This will allow each new year 7 cohort to be increased by 13 pupils, increasing the school's PAN (pupil admission number) to 240 over time.

Updates will be posted on the website as we have them. Ms Spivey, Headteacher

CHALLENGE PARTNERS REVIEW
School Life The school was delighted to receive another very positive report from Challenge Partners in which Springfield was assessed as being 'at the top of the Good grade as judged by Ofsted in ... 2016'. The review took place at the start of February; a team of four reviewers led by Bogusia Matusiak-Varley, a highly experienced Ofsted Inspector, reviewed the school's work with the school's leadership team. Over thirty lessons were observed, exam and assessment outcomes were scrutinised and pupils were interviewed regarding their experiences. The full report is available on the school's website: http://www.springfield.uk.net/index.php/2013-12-19-08-03-40/challenge-partners Highlights include: 'Relationships between students and teachers are outstanding...' 'Behaviour of students is exemplary in lessons and around the school allowing learning to take place at every opportunity.' 'The expertise and undeterred ambition of the senior leadership team has the potential to move the school to outstanding...' 'The attainment of all students was above the national average in 2016...Science and Languages achieved results that placed them in the top 10% nationally...' The school's improvement focus remains to accelerate the progress of disadvantaged learners. Congratulations to the staff and pupils for such a positive review. Ms Spivey, Headteacher
Polite reminder:
Kindly note that the school's uniform code does include pupils' haircuts. Extreme haircuts, unnatural dyed hair colours and shaved patterns are not acceptable. Hair cuts should be no shorter than a grade 3. Again, we ask parents to ensure that their children meet this expectation such that our high standards can be maintained. Thank you for your support in this matter. Ms Spivey, Headteacher
UNIFORM
We ask for parents' on-going support with ensuring that their children arrive at school every day wearing correct school uniform and properly equipped for their lessons. Full details regarding school uniform are published on the school's website: http://www.springfield.uk.net/index.php/school-life/2014-01-17-11-29-10

Statistics Hot on the heels of the UK Maths Challenge success, Springfield celebrates another achievement in Maths! Some of our top set Year 10 mathematicians have worked for over a year on developing their statistics skills, through lessons in Year 9 and through committing their time after school during Period 6s this year. Supported by Mrs Kilgallon, we now have 45 pupils who have achieved a Level 3 Edexcel Award in Statistics. This is above GCSE level (GCSE A*- C grades or 5+ are Level 2 qualifications), equivalent to the standard expected for an A Level and carries 7 UCAS points which count towards University entry requirements. We are very proud of these pupils and what they have achieved, congratulations to them all. The Year 11 Product Design pupils have worked tirelessly on their GCSE Controlled Assessments over the past months. The two assessment briefs were: Lighting brief - ‘Designers have a responsibility to design products that address environmental issues and use sustainable materials. Using cardboard as the main material, design and make a modern lighting product. The product could be a freestanding light that is powered by a low voltage power source or an innovative solution for a lamp shade.’ The brief for aftershave bottles and stand - ‘A well-known cosmetics manufacturer is planning on launching a new perfume or aftershave. Design and make a prototype of either a perfume or aftershave bottle that incorporates a decorative lid that is a stand out aesthetic feature of the design. In addition, design and make a suitable point of sale display stand that would be used to display and draw attention to the bottle in the retail outlets. You may use the branding of your chosen cosmetics manufacturer but the focus must be placed on the design of the bottle, the decorative lid and the point of sale display stand. ‘ As you can see they have all risen to the challenge and produced this fantastic selection of lamps/prototypes. I would highly recommend becoming a referee if you are interested in football as the opportunities you can gain by completing a three-day course are mind blowing. It is possible to work your way up to maybe one day becoming a Premier League referee (you never know). Well done to the Year 10 netball team who won their tournament game on Monday 13th March 2017. Unfortunately the most recent tournament game was postponed so we look forward to hearing shortly how they get on. Good luck girls!

Congratulations to the Year 11 boys’ football team who have reached the Hampshire Schools Football Cup final to be played at Fratton Park on 11th May 2017 at 6.45pm. A limited number of tickets are available to purchase from the PE Office at £5 per ticket.
Congratulations to the Year 7 boys’ indoor cricket team, who beat St Edmunds in a very close game. St Edmunds won the toss and put Springfield into bat, scoring 70 runs. In reply St Edmunds scored 66 after some excellent bowling by the Springfield attack. The team then went on to represent Portsmouth in the Hampshire cup finals at the Ageas Bowl on 23rd March. The boys played well with some excellent bowling and fielding. Mr Peachment, Teacher of P.E.
FOOTBALL
NETBALL
My journey to become a referee was not what I expected. I thought it would be mostly sitting down at a table reading from a book or listening to someone speaking for hours having to write down everything the trainer would say. However it was nothing like that. We spent most of the day outside on the field of play (the football pitch) undertaking mostly situation drills, in which we would act out what could occur on the field of play and how to deal with what could happen, i.e. infringements of the laws or controlling the match in co-operation with the linesmen. The course lasted for three days with an assessment on the last day. Luckily I passed and I am now able to start refereeing children’s matches. I am trying to referee as many games as possible to gain experience so I can pass my final exam in July. Referee courses are available for anyone over the age of 14 years. They are open to both boys and girls and as a bonus you get paid between £20-£25 a game! If you are interested in becoming a referee please refer to this link:

Mrs Whittingham’s Riddle
Timmy’s mother had three children. The first was named April, the next was named May. What was the name of the third child? The answer to the last riddle ‘ What was the king of the classroom?’ was ‘The ruler!’
