FAITH FORMATION NEWS… “The family which experiences the joy of faith communicates it naturally. That family is the salt of the earth and the light of the world; it is the leaven of society.” ~ Pope Francis, October 27, 2013 About Family Formation: Do you sometimes feel that your children know more about being a Catholic Christian than you do? Families gather on the second Sunday of each month, from September thru April, following the 9:00 a.m. Mass until 11:30 a.m., for eight sessions. This year’s curriculum is based on the World Meeting of Families book, Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive. Some of the topics include: Created for Joy; the Mission of Love; Creating the Future; Light in a Dark World; A Home for the Wounded Heart Families will work together to accomplish monthly family challenges and goals!

Education Commission The primary work of the Education Commission is to develop policies, help plan and continue to develop Catholic Christian formation for students from pre-school through junior year in high school.

Program Focus The center of all the Faith Formation programs at Saint Mary Parish in Milton is Sacred Scripture. The teaching of the Scriptures leads students towards the everyday living of the Scriptures through actions. These actions bring the students from the very young through high school to doing good things for others which is centered on the Scriptural command to love God and neighbor as self. The

pastor

and

coordinator

are

available for the development of the catechists and their students during the faith formation sessions, as well as other times as needed. Current Members: Joyce Albright, Jennifer Fanning, Deb Krausse, Lisa Meyers, Rod Montanye, Mike Sessler

You may have heard that Pope Francis recently issued an encyclical on the environment. Great! What’s an encyclical? It is an official document of the Catholic Church. The Pope holds universal teaching authority for the whole Church throughout the world and he uses documents such as this to communicate matters concerning doctrine, morality, devotion, governance, or discipline. These documents fall into categories and rank differently as far as their

weight of authority. At the top of the hierarchy would be an apostolic constitution and an example of one is Gaudium et Spes, the Constitution on the Church in the Modern World issued in 1965 at the end of the Second Vatican Council. An encyclical would be next in importance and is generally a letter regarding some aspect of faith and morals. Below that is an apostolic letter which gives counsel on a particular situation that might be happening in the world. An apostolic exhortation is similar but usually publishes the result of a synod or gathering of bishops from around the world. For example, Familiaris Consortio was released late in 59 8 5, following the 1980 Synod on the Family. Another such document will be released by Pope Francis after the Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the Family which will meet in Vatican City from October 4-25, 2015. What’s the deal with the Latin titles? These authoritative documents of the Church are usually written in the Latin language and the title is generally taken from its first few words. When they are translated into different languages, the title is also translated. So, the first encyclical by Pope Francis, published as Lumen fidei, became “The Light of Faith” for English readers. Sometimes the Latin title doesn’t

translate cleanly and the document is instead known by its subtitle. That is the case with Familiaris Consortio which is commonly referred to as “The Christian Family in the Modern World.” Laudato Si’ is the second encyclical by Pope Francis, issued on June 18th and written in Italian. The title uses the same Italian spelling as St. Francis of Assisi did in the opening phrase of the saint’s famous prayer thanking God for the gifts of creation. It translates into English as “Praise Be to You” and is subtitled “On Care for Our Common Home.” The encyclical is segmented into six chapters and the pope argues that responsibility to protect the environment needs to include concern for humanity as well as for nature. All are a creation of God and therefore interconnected. Chapter 1 (“What is Happening to Our Common Home”) is a survey of the current situation. Chapters 3 (“The Human Roots of the Ecological Crisis”) and 4 (“Integral Ecology”) outline the human causes of environmental decline. Chapters 2 (“The Gospel of Creation”) and 6 (“Ecological Education and Spirituality”) present theological and spiritual themes respectively. Chapter 5 (“Lines of Approach and Action”) offers practical policy choices. The document concludes with two prayers

showing how faith in God can shape and inspire our care for the environment. Where can you find out more? You can read the whole thing online or buy a copy of it. You can also download a discussion guide. We have a new pamphlet in the rack on the wall near the church entrance that looks just like the cover shown at the beginning of this article. In there you will find more information about Laudato Si': On Care of Our Common Home. To learn more about how you can develop an ethic that embodies the responsible planning and management of resources, also pick up the pamphlets “What the Church Teaches: Stewardship,” “Abundance Through Stewardship,” “Living Catholic Stewardship: Joyful Generosity,” and “Living Catholic Stewardship: Faith & Finances.” “Education in environmental responsibility can encourage ways of acting which directly and significantly affect the world around us, such as avoiding the use of plastic and paper, reducing water consumption, separating refuse, cooking only what can reasonably be consumed, showing care for other living beings, using public transport or car-pooling, planting trees, turning off unnecessary lights, or any number of other practices. All of these reflect a generous and worthy creativity which brings out the best in human beings. Reusing something instead of immediately discarding it, when done for the right reasons, can be an act of love which expresses our own dignity.” (numbered paragraph #211 from “Laudato Si'”)

Volunteer Opportunity! Be inspired by married couples celebrating over 50 years of married love… I’m in need of some folks to help with my favorite event of the year – the Wedding Anniversary Celebration!

On Sunday, August 16, Bishop Mor lino will celebr ate a Mass of Thanksgiving for married couples celebrating 50, 55, 60 or more years of marriage. This year, we have also included newly married couples in their first three years of marriage! I look forward to the juxtaposition of newly married couples with those who have been blessed with a lifetime of married love.

Please respond by August 7th Email Beth at [email protected]

Location: Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Monona

I’m in need of about 20 volunteers to help out with the event. Most jobs are real easy!  Registration – help greet and register the couples as they arrive  Greetings/Ushers – usher the couples to their assigned seats  Parking Assistance  Cake Servers at Reception (would not be able to attend Mass)  Background music for reception?

All activities will conclude between 3:30 - 4:00 pm.

If you can help, please email Beth at [email protected] by August 7.

Formal attire required (e.g. suits for men)!

In the past, we’ve had a mixture of adults and teens that have made the day a great success. I hope you can join us this year and show our appreciation to these wonderful couples.

Schedule: Sunday, August 16 Volunteers arrive by 12:30pm Mass starts at 2:00 pm Reception follows immediately

The Mass does satisfy your Sunday obligation.

Many thanks! Andy Galvin Coordinator of Marriage & Family Programs Diocese of Madison (608) 821-4517 [email protected]

Thank you!

Chapter 2: The Mission of Love

Since its inception by Saint John Paul II in 1994, the World Meeting of Families has strengthened the sacred bonds of families across the globe. Held every three years it is the world’s largest Catholic gathering of families. Each World Meeting of Families has a theme that energizes and enlivens the event while adding great depth of meaning to our understanding of families. The eighth edition will be held in Philadelphia from September 22-27 with an anticipated visit from Pope Francis. The theme is “Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive,” emphasizing the impact of the love and life of families on our society. A document of religious instruction on family life has been prepared under this title. Each week for the next ten weeks, our parish will explore each chapter from this catechism, with reflections developed by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Office for the New Evangelization. You can order a copy of this beautifully illustrated catechism (or look through one in our Ark library) and learn about the World Meeting of Families at WorldMeeting2015.org. There is also a pamphlet in the rack on the wall near the church entrance with more information that you can take home to read.

Chapter 1 of the World Meeting of Families preparatory catechism taught that “Love is Our Mission” because love is our origin and destiny. God created us in his own image, which means that loving God and neighbor is the reason for our existence. Chapter 2 explains that the Bible bursts with images describing God’s love – a father welcoming a prodigal son, a shepherd searching for lost sheep, a mother comforting her children, and many more (see paragraph #24 for details). But marriage is the dominant Biblical metaphor for God’s covenant with Israel and the Church. The Bible is a love story between God and his people, and this love has all the dimensions of a good marriage: it is erotic and heart-felt, but it is also tough and sacrificial, weathering challenges and even betrayal. Jesus loves the Church like a groom loves his bride – even when we disappoint him, even when we hurt him. In this way, Christianity reveals hope for us all, including married couples and families. God commands forgiveness and service because he loves us; forgiveness and mutual service can transform any marriage into a parable of God’s love. God is love, but there is nothing sentimental about this love. God is love – and when we love like he loves, it will cost us, but it is the only way to live authentically and avoid counterfeit loves. Contemplating Christ on the cross, we gaze on the miracle that created and sustains us. 

WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES PRAYER God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior, you have made us your sons and daughters In the family of the Church. May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel. May the example of the Holy Family with the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer and to always seek your truth and live in your love Through Christ our Lord.
