Tyufekchieva V., K. Kumanski, Iv.Yaneva. 2011. Stoneflies (Plecoptera, Insecta) from the Western Rhodopes (Bulgaria). In: Beron P. (ed.) Biodiversity of Bulgaria. 4. Biodiversity of Western Rhodopes (Bulgaria and Greece) II. Pensoft & Nat. Mus. Natur. Hist. Sofia, 213-221. Abstract: A total of 47 species and 5 subspecies, belonging to 7 families and 12 genera of order Plecoptera have been found in the Bulgarian part of the Western Rhodopes. They represent 47.3% of the 110 stoneflies known up to now in Bulgaria. Fourteen species from the investigated region are reported for the first time. Eleven endemics and 10 rare species have been found. Sixty-seven localities of stoneflies are known. Key words: Plecoptera, faunistic composition, Western Rhodopes, Bulgaria

Introduction The first data on the stoneflies of the Western Rhodopes are reported by Rauser (1962, 1965), Braasch & Joost (1971, 1975, 1976) and Braasch (1972). Data on the stoneflies are reported in the studies of Russev & Janeva (1975) and Janeva (1989). Kovachev & Uzunov (1986) presented data on the macroinvertebrate communities in the Mesta River and reported the finding of five Plecoptera species. In relation to the ecomonitoring in Rozhen-Srednogorie region Janeva et al. (1997) gave data on the stonefly species in (Shirokolushka River, at site HMS 477). Janeva et al. (2001) studied the species diversity of the bottom invertebrate communities in Arda River. The aim of this work is to present a summary of faunistic composition on the stonefly species in the Bulgarian part of the Western Rhodopes. Material and methods The current review of Plecoptera species in the Western Rhodopes is based on known literature and unpublished data. Sixty-seven localities of stoneflies are known and its geographic coordinates are provided by Michev (1999) (Table 1). Most of them are concentrated in the surroundings of the towns of Devin, Shiroka Laka, Kardjali, Ardino and Trigrad village. In the remaining part of the Western Rhodopes there are single

localities. The distribution of stoneflies is comparatively well-known in the valleys of the rivers Mesta, Chepinska, Trigradska, Vacha, Shirokolashka and Arda. Mostly, the species were separated from hydrobiological invertebrate samples, collected by the standard method ISO 7828/1985. The qualitative kick sample method was also used (Frost et al. 1971). All samples were sieved using a collecting net with mesh size 250 μm and fixed in 4% formaldehyde. After laboratory sorting by systematic groups and species determination, they were kept in 80% alcohol. Most of the Plecoptera species are determined as larvae and a small part – as imago. Abbreviations used in the text and tables: UD – unpublished data; WCS – water catchment station; HMS – hydrometric station; i – imago; la – larvae Faunistic and zoogeographical notes A total of 47 stonefly species and 5 subspecies from the Bulgarian part of the Western Rhodopes are known and represent 47.3% of the total number (110) of the taxa of this order known in Bulgaria. (Table 2). They belong to 7 families and 12 genera of order Plecoptera. Fourteen species are new for the Western Rhodope fauna (Brachyptera risi, Taeniopteryx hubaulti, Protonemura auberti, P. autumnalis, P. montana, P. meyeri, P. nitida, Leuctra major, L. prima, Dinocras megacephala, Perla bipunctata, P. burmeisteriana, P. illiesi and Chloroperla tripunctata tripunctata). The Nemouridae family is the richest in species – 15, followed by Leuctridae – 10 species, Taeniopterygidae, Perlodidae and Perlidae – 7, and Chloroperlidae – 5. The family Capniidae is presented only by a single species. The most widespread species are Brachyptera seticornis, Protonemura intricata, Leuctra pseudosignifera, Perlodes intricatus, Isoperla grammatica, Dinocras megacephala and Perla marginata. Plecoptera order has a moderate level of endemism. Eleven endemics (both Bulgarian and Balkan) and 10 rare species have been established within the territory of the Bulgarian part of the Western Rhodopes. They represent 35.7% from all 28 rare species (Kumanski 1997; GUEORGUIEV et al., 1998) and 35.48% from all endemics known in Bulgaria. This shows clearly the high significance of the region for supporting stonefly populations in these latitudes. This is due to the highly variable habitat types in the region. The biggest family – Nemouridae is also the richest of endemic forms (3 – Nemoura braaschi, N. bulgarica, and N. pirinensis ) and rare species (5 – Protonemura auberti, P. autumnalis, P. brevistyla, P. meyeri and P. nitida). Leuctridae family is represented by 2 endemics (Leuctra marani and L. pseudohippopus) and 1 rare species (Leuctra prima). Chloroperla brachyptera, C. kosarovi and C. russevi are endemics and C. tripunctata tripunctata is rare species from Chloroperlidae family. Family Taeniopterigydae have two endemic species Brachyptera bulgarica, B. thracica and one rare species (Taeniopteryx hubaulti). Perlodidae have one endemic species (Isoperla submontana) and Perlidae family is represented by 2 rare species (Perla bipunctata and P. illiesi). Endemics and rare species from Capniidae family have not been found. Nine rare species are new for the Bulgarian part of the mountain. Relict species have not been found. The endemic taxa and rare species have a high conservation value.

Stoneflies (Plecoptera, Insecta) from the Western Rhodopes... 221
