With the support of the Orthodontic Department of the University of Siena

Dear Colleague, The deep knowledge of biomechanics is an invaluable asset for any orthodontist, since any kind of orthodontic therapy using all kinds of technique or approach, can deeply benefit from it. The knowledge of biomechanics allows for a real understanding of the therapy we perform every day, making our appliance effects predictable and letting us understand the reasons of our possible mistakes. Finally e deep knowledge of biomechanics allows the orthodontist for the design of specific, tailor made appliances, that may be needed to solve problems with a special degree of difficulty. Unfortunately, the learning of this subject is quite demanding and many orthodontists prefer to avoid to face its difficulties and delegate most of their work to “smart” or “intelligent” wires or brackets, with sometime questionable results. After having lectured for so many years about biomechanics, and after we have been working together for more than 20 years on the “Biomechanics in Orthodontics” software, we have decided to undertake this new challenge of teaching the “real” biomechanics in four weeks of hard work. So we have planned this course that will take place in Tuscany, in the month of July next year. We are still working to define some of the details of the course, but here follow some of the most important features of this course: 1. Start date July 1st 2013, End date July 26th 2013 2. The course consists of 7 hours of lectures and practical activities (typodont) per day, 5 days per week (Saturday and Sunday will be free), a total of 140 hours of work. 3. The course will be in English language. 4. At least 75% of the lectures will be given directly by Dr. Giorgio Fiorelli or Prof. Birte Melsen. 5. The exact venue of the course has not been decided yet, but it will be in Tuscany in a beautiful area. We are still considering different solutions. A final decision will be taken by the end of the year. 6. The fee of the course will be Euro 5,500, plus 21% VAT if due(*). In the fee is included the cost of the software “Biomechanics in Orthodontics” and “T3d Occlusogram Software” (**) . The fee does not include lodging and meals.

7. The application is possible for any graduated dentist or postgraduate specialist in orthodontics, of any country, since in our experience both the beginner and a skilled orthodontist can greatly benefit from this kind of course. 8. The minimum number of participants will be 12. If one month before the course start date we have not reached this number of applicants, the course will be cancelled and the paid fees, reimbursed. (Except 1000€, corresponding to the value of the software) 9. The maximum number of participants will be 30. When this number of applications will be reached we will not accept any further application. At this time, we will create a waiting list, in case someone, who has already accepted, decides to renounce to the course later on. 10. The course registrations will be opened in January and a registration fee of 1000 Euro (+ 21% VAT if due) (*) must be paid at the same time of registration. With this fee the participants will receive the software “Biomechanics in Orthodontics” and “T3d Occlusogram” (**). 11. Any registration fee, received after we have reached the maximum number of applications, will be refunded immediately. 12. The registration fee will be reimbursed only in the case described in the above point, or if one or two software were already owned by the participant in the case of cancellation or renunciation of the course, since this fee corresponds to the value of the software received at registration time. 13. The remaining amount of 4500 Euro has to be paid by May 15th 2013. In case this second installment of the fee is not paid by this date, this will be considered a renunciation of the course. If a waiting list exists, the secretary will contact those who are in that list. Topics of the course (could have minor changes, with some possible addition) Elements of Statics, Vectorial Calculations, Relations between Force System and Dental Movement, Analysis of Static Equilibrium, Management of Anchorage (includes the use of TADS), The Biological Reaction to Orthodontic Forces, The Treatment Planning and the Use of T3D Occlusogram, Statically Determined Appliances (Cantilevers), Two vector Mechanics, Burstone Six Geometries, Basic Theory of Dental Alignment with Full Arches or Segments, Use of Loops for alignment, The Use of Trans Palatal Arches and Lingual Arches, Correction of Vertical Problems, Asymmetries: Clinical Management and Treatment Mechanics, Uprighting and Torque, Space Closure and Space Openings, Orthodontic Treatment in Multidisciplinar Cases. If you are interested in this course, please write to [email protected] and let us know. You will have no obligation, but in January we will give you the possibility to register one week ahead of all other doctors, so you will have many more chances to be admitted to the course if you decide to apply. Yours Sincerely Giorgio Fiorelli and Birte Melsen

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------* VAT is due if the participant is resident in Italy, or if the participant does not have a Tax ID in his country (VAT# in EC). ** 500€ for each software will be deducted from the final payment if the participant already owns them . In this case the software will not be given at registration time.
