JAN 17

The American Heart Association advises that the MAX amount of sugar for men to consume daily is 37.5g per day, and max amount for women is 25g per day. We don’t want to be too caught up in the number, as there are many healthier sugar sources that will surpass this daily number in a healthy lifestyle, but we do want to be aware of how much we are consuming–especially in those foods we wouldn’t expect! CANNED FRUIT Those cute diced peaches fruit cups that seem like healthy options for the kids? They can rack up a whopping 17-20g sugar! Many canned fruit variations are soaked in a sugary syrup! BREAKFAST/CEREAL BARS Marketing masters convince us they’re healthy, but cereal bars can pack on 12-15g sugar, and we’d never know! CEREAL & MILK A classic breakfast dish! It really is a surprise that a single serving (and who only eats one?) of Raisin Bran & skim milk can rack up over double the grams your recommended sugar intake! The cereal alone is nearly 45g sugar, and even skim milk has 12-15g! Natural or not, too much sugar can lead to weight gain and fat retention. Get your sugar from wholesome sources. It’s also important to be mindful of those cereals touted as “healthy,” such as brands like Special K, or those making claims to “heart health” and “more whole grains.” The safest bet is to always read the nutrition label! INSTANT OATMEAL & GRANOLA Along with cereal, instant oatmeal packets are generally packed with sugar to sweeten those delicious (but not so nutritious) flavors– many have upwards of 15g of sugar! It’s cheaper and more nutirtious to prepare your own oatmeal– and if you’re in a time crunch, reach for quick cooking! They’re a much healthier option than instant. Granola is another tricky one– we’re told it’s a healthy treat, but many store-bought brands are just sugar in disguise! YOGURT Even “healthy” fat-free yogurts, such as Yoplait, that are flavored and sweetened have 30-40g sugar! Eat that yogurt with a banana and add another 20g. Go Greek instead! FAT FREE PRODUCTS Usually when fat is taken out, sugar is put in, so be aware! PASTA SAUCE Click here to watch my OLD episode on marinara and homemade pasta sauce–I talk about how crazy sugar is in storebought pasta sauces. FROZEN DINNERS Lean cuisines are healthy, right? They’re often scolded for excessive sodium, but many variations also have up to 10g sugar! Why?! WHITE BREAD Bread doesn’t necessarily have a lot of sugar in it but is digested and absorbed like sugar is because it is a refined starch.
