WELCOME TEAM CAPTAINS! Congratulations on making the commitment to form a team for the 19th annual Susan G. Komen Inland Empire Race for the Cure®. Year after year, Team Captains have proven to be incredible leaders, making the Race more successful in furthering our mission to end breast cancer. Your hard work and dedication saves lives and for that, we cannot thank you enough. Race teams help Komen Inland Empire ignite the inner strength of individual women to take on and overcome breast cancer. This Team Captain Toolkit is a resource to help you create and manage a successful team. It will serve as an excellent tool as you recruit team members and lead them in their fundraising efforts. After more than 19 years of serving women and saving lives in Riverside and San Bernardino counties and 35 years as a national organization, we are reinventing the way we think of breast cancer awareness in the community. We are BOLD, we are FEARLESS, we are MORE THAN PINK. What does that mean? It means that while the color pink is pretty, breast cancer is not. We are turning awareness into action, moving intentions into more impact and challenging our community to ACT, DONATE and GET INVOLVED. Together, we will pave the path toward our bold goal to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50% in the U.S. by 2026. There are more than 300,000 women living with breast cancer in California. An estimated 23,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in California this year, more than 2,000 of these cases will be in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties! While we have made progress towards personalized treatments and are on the edge of breakthrough research that will lead us to the cure. Our work is clearly not done! This is why we need you! It’s one thing to be aware of breast cancer. It’s another to do something about it! By starting a team and fundraising, you are…

WHAT IS A TEAM? Anyone can create a team, and teams can be any size. However, we encourage every team to become an “official” team by registering 10 or more individuals. Teams can participate in one of the divisions listed below: • • • • •

Corporate/Company Friends & Family School/University Battle of the Badges High School Team Challenge

From registration to Race day, Team Captains will be given the tools needed to activate and engage their team members and their individual fundraising efforts. Official teams of 10 or more will be eligible to qualify for various fundraising incentives.

WHY FORM A TEAM? Participating with a team multiplies the fun, laughter and maybe even the tears you share on Race Day. It also strengthens the impact that you have on the global movement to end breast cancer forever. You’ll have a wider pull of donors and with the support of your teammates, fundraising will be more enjoyable (and successful) as it is easier to stay motivated. Together, you will form a force even greater than that which you could accomplish alone.

HOW TO BUILD A TEAM: After you register, log into your Participant Center and invite your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors to join you on your team! TEAM BENEFITS: • Official teams of 10 or more who raise $1,000 or more (by September 29th) will earn their way into the “Team Tailgate” festivities area on race day. Spaces can also be purchased for $250. Click here for Team Tailgate form. • Prizes will be awarded to top fundraising teams, as well as teams with the most registered participants.

TEAM CAPTAIN DUTIES:

WHAT WE PROVIDE:

As the captain of a team, you will be the primary point of contact for your team members. It is your job to create the team, invite people to join and keep members motivated, inspired and informed of the team’s progress. You will be responsible for making sure that every team member is registered and ready to help your team raise funds!

• PARTICIPANT MATERIALS FOR YOUR TEAM MEMBERS. We’ll have everything you’ll need for your team members. That includes official Race shirts and bibs; pink Survivor shirts for the survivors on your team; plus safety pins, fundraiser forms and breast health information.

1. First, CREATE your team (you must create/ register your team online). Returning team captains must register a team for the current year. Team names are not guaranteed so the earlier you create the team, the better your chances are of keeping the same name. 2. Then RECRUIT people to join. Encourage online registration. 3. Remember, set a team FUNDRAISING goal. Team Captains are the number one reason members fundraise. Communicate Race information to your team – keep everyone motivated!

• TEAM CAPTAIN PINK RALLY: You are invited to join Komen Inland Empire, to learn more about leading a Race for the Cure Team and interact with other Team Captains! Come celebrate with other Team Captains and supporters as we kick off this year’s Race! Join us at our Race party where you will receive an overview of the Race and hear fun tips from past Teams. Participate in peer-to-peer interaction as well as from a seasoned corporate team, and a Komen grantee team. The Team Captain Pink Rally will be held at the Europa Village on August 30, 5:30-7:30PM. More information on page 13.

4. PICK UP TEAM PACKETS - EACH TEAM CAPTAIN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PICKING UP HER/HIS TEAM’S PACKETS. Race t-shirt, race bibs, as well as additional materials will be included in each team members’ packet. Team packets must be picked up by the captain or a team representative. If you made a selfdonation of $25 or more you will receive the I AM MORE THAN PINK Commemorative medal upon pick-up of your Race packet. PACKET PICKUP: Dates and times will be announced soon. Please follow us on Facebook for updates. 5. Have FUN! The day of the Race is the culmination of all of your efforts. Don’t forget to enjoy the day and celebrate all of your hard work.
