SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY NUCLEAR SCIENCE 342-3 Introduction to Nuclear Science (Spring 2009) Instructor: Dr. Barry Davids; Office C9042; e-mail [email protected] General Course Description: This course is a quantitative introduction to the properties and interactions of atomic nuclei. Topics include observables of the nucleus, nuclear forces, nuclear structure, radioactive decay, and nuclear reactions. 3 lecture hours/week; 1 tutorial hour/week; 0 lab hours Lectures: MWF 8:30-9:20, AQ5016 Tutorial: F 9:30-10:20, AQ5006 Office Hour: F 10:30-11:20, C9042 Grading: Homework 20%, midterm exam 30%, & final exam 50% Examination Dates: Midterm exam Wed 18 February & final exam Fri 17 April Required Text: Walter Loveland, David Morrissey, and Glenn Seaborg, “Modern Nuclear Chemistry” Optional Text: Kenneth Krane’s “Introductory Nuclear Physics” is a useful supplementary text, but is not required.
