Fre qu e n t ly A ske d Q u e st ion s How can I lower my storage costs with the StorageTek T10000D?
The StorageTek T10000D’s 8.5 TB capacity means you can consolidate your existing tape system into fewer tape cartridges, smaller libraries, and less floor space. For instance, users of StorageTek T10000B tape drives can realize an 8.5-to-1 reduction in tape cartridges by migrating to StorageTek T10000D. For LTO-4 and LTO-5 users, the consolidation benefits are 10 to 1 and 5 to 1, respectively. The StorageTek T10000D’s 252 MB/sec (up to 800 MB/sec compressed) means you can do the same work with fewer tape drives and less power. What is the maximum amount of data that can be stored on a single tape cartridge?
With the Maximum Capacity feature enabled on the StorageTek T10000D tape drive, a single tape cartridge can store up to 8.5 TB. Without the Maximum Capacity feature enabled, a single tape cartridge can store up to 8 TB. What is the maximum amount of data that can be stored in a single tape library complex?
With the StorageTek T10000D tape drive in Oracle’s StorageTek SL8500 modular library system, 2 exabytes of data may be stored in a single tape library (assumes 2.5:1 compression).
How is the 32-channel head technology beneficial?
The 32-channel head technology allows the StorageTek T10000D tape drive to write 32 tracks at once, allowing the tape to move slower through the tape path. A slower tape speed enables better servo control (fewer errors) and more efficient data writes, contributing to higher data reliability. Faster backhitching, more full tape operations before wear-out, and fewer passes to fill tape contribute to less wear on the tape drive and media. What is the SafeGuide System tape path feature and how is it beneficial?
The StorageTek T10000D’s SafeGuide System tape path feature is an extended tape path, with five rollers, which guides the tape on the non-data side of the tape. The SafeGuide System tape path feature requires 18x less edge force to guide the tape (compared to LTO and TS11xx), provides less risk of track damage due to edge wear, and improves data reliability and long-term tape stability. How does the StorageTek T10000D minimize starts, stops, and backhitching?
The StorageTek T10000D offers a large 2 GB buffer, the File Sync Accelerator feature, and the Tape Application Accelerator feature. What interfaces are available for the StorageTek T10000D tape drive?
16 Gb native Fibre Channel and native FICON.
What is the highest performing single tape library complex, in terms of data throughput?
Will the 16Gb Fibre Channel interface work in my 4Gb data center?
With the StorageTek T10000D tape drive in the StorageTek SL8500 modular library system, 1.4 PB/hour of throughput may be achieved within a single tape library (assumes 2.5:1 compression).
Yes. The 16 Gb Native Fibre Channel interface auto negotiates down to 8Gb and 4Gb Fibre Channel networks.
What differentiates the StorageTek T10000D from other tape drives?
Yes. The native FICON interface auto negotiates down to 8Gb and 4Gb FICON
Aside from its high capacity and throughput, the StorageTek T10000D is designed for the enterprise and 24/7 operating environments. A host of performance accelerator features and a fourth-generation SafeGuide tape path enables the StorageTek T10000D to outperform other tape drives.
With which configurations is the StorageTek T10000D compatible?
Will the FICON interface work in my 4 Gb data center?
The StorageTek T10000D works in a dual rackmount configuration or the StorageTek SL8500 and StorageTek SL3000 modular library systems.

Does the StorageTek T10000D have partitioning?
Yes. The StorageTek T10000D offers the Tape Tiering Accelerator feature and the In-Drive Reclaim Accelerator feature, which take advantage of partitioning. Is the StorageTek T10000D compatible with LTFS?
Yes. The StorageTek T10000D is compatible with LTFS, enabling writing files to tape in a self-describing format, much the same way files are stored to disk and flash storage devices. Can I write to Oracle’s existing StorageTek T10000 T2 tape cartridge with the StorageTek T10000D tape drive?
Yes. Oracle’s StorageTek T10000 T2 tape cartridge may be written with StorageTek T10000C for up to 5.5 TB of capacity and may be rewritten with StorageTek T10000D for up to 8.5 TB of capacity. Can the StorageTek T10000D read media that was written with a StorageTek T10000A or StorageTek T10000B or StorageTek T10000C tape drive?
Yes. The StorageTek T10000D can backward read StorageTek T10000 media written with the StorageTek T10000A or StorageTek T10000B tape drives and can read StorageTek T10000 T2 tape cartridges written with the StorageTek T10000C tape drive. I don’t need 8.5 TB on one cartridge, and I would like to have faster access to my data. Can the StorageTek T10000D help?
Yes, the sport option of the StorageTek T10000 T2 tape cartridge holds only 1.6 TB when used with the StorageTek T10000D, and it offers an average access time of only 14 seconds, for fast access needs. Can I ensure that data written with a StorageTek T10000D tape drive is never over-written?
Yes, StorageTek T10000 T2 tape cartridges come in a write once, read many (WORM) format to protect your data. Is the StorageTek T10000D encryption enabled?
Yes, the StorageTek T10000D is encryption capable and keys may be securely managed outside the data path using Oracle Key Manager 3 or within the data path by the application. Does the StorageTek T10000D consume less power when it is idle?
Yes, the StorageTek T10000D automatically switches to hibernation mode when it is idle, consuming only 36 watts of power.
