Teaching Grammar in the Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) Classroom Dr. Claudia Ross
Grammar is one of the foundations of language, yet the mastery of grammar is by no means the endpoint of language learning. This half-‐day workshop will focus on teaching grammar in a communication-‐ focused, student-‐centered Chinese language classroom. Break-‐out discussions will include: the sequencing and scaffolding of structures, setting communication goals following the principles of backward design, and the creation of situational contexts that facilitate the practice of grammatical structures through meaningful communication. In addition to providing an excellent workshop on grammar usage in the Chinese language classroom, Dr. Ross will be sharing her experiences working in the field of K-‐16 Chinese language education over the past 20 years. Dr. Claudia Ross is a Professor of Chinese at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts and has taught Chinese language, linguistics, and culture for over 20 years. She received her Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Michigan, specializing in Chinese and Japanese, and has lived in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Japan. She has twice served as President of the Chinese Language Teachers Association and is the author or co-‐author of scholarly articles in linguistics and reference grammar, and textbooks in the field of Chinese as a foreign language, including the Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar co-‐authored with Jing-‐heng Ma and the recently released Chinese textbook, the Routledge Course in Modern Mandarin co-‐authored with Baozhang He, Pei-‐Chia Chen, and Meng Yeh.
