Electric Company’s Tear the Curtain! is a theatrical, visual, and cinematic marvel that fully embodies our company’s mandate. Inspired by the history of the Stanley Theatre in Vancouver, this clever, at times vertiginous work examines the insidious yet passionate battle between cinema and live theatre at the dawn of blockbuster “talkies” in the 1930s. Devised as a detective story, Tear the Curtain! exposes this battle as it is waged between the mafias controlling these two empires, each trying to outwit the other for domination of the audio-visual world. The war unravels on stage in a seamless blend of filmed and live performance, making it sometimes impossible for us to decipher which medium we are viewing. And through it all we are faced with the opportunity to examine what exactly it is we want - or expect from art: to be challenged and pushed out of our comfort zones, or for convention and order to be upheld.

Having debuted in Vancouver last year, Tear the Curtain! is the invention of Canadian Stage Resident Artist Kim Collier and her long-standing collaborators Jonathon Young and Kevin Kerr. This is the team that brought us the wonderful Studies in Motion in 2010.11, and last season Kim directed our nationally acclaimed production of Red. We are delighted to showcase this multidisciplinary adventure to launch a particularly vibrant and thought-provoking season. Thank you for celebrating 25 years with us, and many more to come.

WHY TEAR THE CURTAIN! OR IN OTHER WORDS, WHAT?

WE DON’T EXACTLY KNOW, OR, THERE WILL BE MORE THAN ONE ANSWER. In the spirit of the surrealist art movement of the 1920s, we have allowed the forces of random chance and free association to shape the world of our play. THE IMPULSE TO “DISMANTLE”. The play is inspired by all the serious “isms” in art which began to dismantle everything around the turn of the last century; at first with a kind of childlike innocence, and then with a kind of scientific sophistication, and then with a kind of spiritual brutality, and then with a kind of heartless awareness of their own eventual commodification. NOSTALGIA for a time and place when a radical new play or film could stir the masses into a riotous mob. Were we more innocent before the cinema and the television? Were we more “whole”? What have we gained from such obsessive social reflection? What’s been lost? Is nostalgia an escapist cop-out or in fact a genuine longing for authenticity?

ARTIFICIALITY. Tear the Curtain! is full of imitation and convention and will reuse old-fashioned stereotypes with both a fondness for them and a desire to bust them up.

IT’S A HYBRID. Tear the Curtain! has an identity crisis, but there will be no real fight waged here between stage and screen – it’s more like a conversation between the two mediums and their respective strengths and weaknesses. The cinematic image can bring us within a hair’s-breadth of our idols, tricking us with the delirious illusion of intimacy. By contrast, the live theatre keeps us at a distance but reveals to us our vulnerability, our very humanness. Which form is more intimate? And how do they come to our rescue when we need them? The actual battle lines tonight will be drawn between the mainstream and the avant-garde; inspired on the one hand by Stanislaw Witkiewicz, Antonin Artaud, Hakim

ORIGINALITY. It’s a commonly held truth that there are no truly original ideas. But is it still possible that with courage and a little recklessness we can create a form that, like Alex our protagonist, risks everything and takes itself apart to expose a glimpse of the new, the now, the unseen? THE MODERN-DAY BLOCKBUSTER and how they literally seize our attention. We leave feeling force-fed, stunned and maybe abducted, wondering: While we were in there being gobbled up by that story, was something implanted and something else irreplaceably replaced?

David’s varied career ranges from megamusicals Showboat, Phantom of the Opera and Sunset Blvd., to three seasons at The Shaw Festival, from various roles in theatres across the country, to many appearances on TV & Film and an extensive list of voice-over credits. Recently, David played Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, was featured in the one-man show Jesus, My Boy, played Daddy Warbucks in Annie, Dara in My Granny the Goldfish, Marley/Christmas Present/Joe in Jeremy Tow’s adaptation of A Christmas Carol, Mr. Green in Visiting Mr. Green, Gino Barbieri in Mambo Italiano, Monsieur Renaud in La Cage aux Folles, General Yepanchin in The Idiot and Isador Strauss in Titanic.

For Canadian Stage: Vinci (2003). Craig is delighted to return to Toronto with Tear the Curtain!. Before moving to Vancouver in 2002, he spent 7 years in Toronto. Highlights of that time include S.S. Scott Bellis Scott Bellis has been an actor in his hometown Vancouver for 25 years, and he is very happy to reunite with Electric Company for this unique show. He is a founding company member and Artistic Associate of Bard on the Beach, where he has appeared in most of Shakespeare's plays since 1990. Last summer's roles: Ford in The Merry Wives of Windsor and the title role in King John. He has been nominated 15 times for Jessie Awards. Upcoming: plays by Sally Stubbs, Drew Macreadie, Willy Russell, and Anton Chekhov. This is his first appearance in Toronto.

Hiro Kanagawa Like many Canadian artists, Hiro has forged a career for himself wearing many hats: actor, teacher, playwright, screenwriter. Among his distinctions are a Jessie Award and an MFA from Simon Fraser University. Stage writing credits include Tiger of Malaya (Factory Theatre/National Arts Centre), The Patron Saint of Stanley Park (Arts Club) and the collaborative creation Sexual Practices of the Japanese (Theatre Replacement). Later this fall he will appear with Vancouver’s Solo Collective for the premiere of Aaron Bushkowsky’s Play with Monsters. He is currently story editor on the gritty rez drama Blackstone and teaches playwriting at Capilano University.

Laura Mennell After years of working in film and television, Laura Mennell is thrilled to revisit her role of Mila in Tear the Curtain!—for which she was nominated for a Jessie Award in 2011. In 2012 Laura was nominated for a Leo Award for her current series-lead role in the hit television show Alphas (Syfy/NBC Universal). Her previous work also includes guest appearances in Fringe and Smallville to supporting roles in the Emmy-nominated Flight 93, and as Janey Slater in the blockbuster Watchmen. Laura is excited and grateful to be working again with such a wonderfully talented cast and crew!

Dawn is pleased as punch to share one of her favourite theatrical experiences with her hometown of Toronto and her family and friends. She previously appeared at Canadian Stage as Susan in Electric Company's production of Studies in Motion. Dawn, a graduate of UBC's BFA Acting Program, resides in Vancouver and has performed at the Arts Club, the Playhouse (sigh), Caravan Farm Theatre, MTC, and PTE among others. She just concluded a season at Bard on the Beach where she acted in The Taming of the Shrew and Macbeth, and is a multiple Jessie Award nominee and winner. Gerard Plunkett Gerard Plunkett is a Dubliner who loves Canada and has made it his home for the past thirty years. On the big screen the veteran actor has appeared in such movies as Eight Below, 2012, Sucker Punch, Snakes on a Plane and has just completed shooting The Seventh Son alongside Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore. He has appeared in numerous TV series such as DaVinci's Inquest, Intelligence, Fringe, and Sanctuary to name but a few. On stage Plunkett is a multiple Jessie Award nominee. He took home the best actor award for his portrayal of Shelley "The Machine" Levene in Glengarry Glen Ross in 2010.

James Fagan Tait James Fagan Tait is from Cornwall, Ontario and lived in Toronto for many years. For the last fifteen years, he has acted, directed, and/or written plays in Vancouver, BC at the Arts Club, Bard on the Beach, Boca del Lupo, The Belfry, Neworld, The Playhouse and others. He recently created Thank You, You’re Not Welcome with dancer Noam Gagnon and adapted The Book of Eve by Constance Beresford-Howe for actress Susan Hogan. He just completed the illustrated book A lion in the bedroom and is thrilled to be working on this project again in such close proximity to family and friends.

Now based in Toronto, Jonathon is co-founder of Electric Company and has collaborated on the making of a dozen original productions since the company began creating work together in 1996. Jonathon has performed in theatres across Canada: The Belfry (Skylight), Vancouver Playhouse (Romeo and Juliet), Arts Club (Intimate Apparel), Citadel (Tartuffe), ATP (Studies in Motion), Centaur (The Invisible Life of Joseph Finch), and the National Arts Centre (Beauty Queen of Leenane). Recent work in Toronto: No Exit (which he adapted with Kim Collier), Studies in Motion (also at Canadian Stage) and Stockholm (Seventh Stage). For the past four years he has had a regular role on the SyFy series Sanctuary. Kevin Kerr Kevin Kerr is playwright and founding member of Electric Company, with whom he’s co-written numerous plays including The Wake, The Score, Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, Flop, The Fall, and Brilliant! The Blinding Enlightenment of Nikola Tesla. He received the Governor General’s Literary Award for his play Unity (1918) in 2002. Electric Company’s production of his play Studies in

Kim Collier Kim is currently the Resident Artist at Canadian Stage and was for 14 years Co-Artistic Director of Electric Company, with whom she continues to create work that tours nationally and internationally. Last season she directed Red (Canadian Stage, Vancouver Playhouse, Citadel Theatre) and All The Way Home (Electric Company/Vancouver Playhouse). She has directed/co-created such Electric Company productions as: Studies in Motion (part of the Canadian Stage 2010.11 season) and a live-video adaptation of Jean Paul Sartre’s No Exit. In 2005, Kim made her debut as a film director with the feature length adaptation of Electric Company’s The Score for Screen Siren Pictures and CBC. Kim is the recipient of the prestigious Elinore & Lou Siminovitch Prize for Directing and numerous other directing, production, writing and innovation awards with her collaborators.

David Roberts David is a Vancouverbased scenographer who has worked across Canada and Europe. He is pleased for all involved that this amazing production is coming to Toronto. Recent projects include Hotel Bethlehem (Ruby Slippers) and Don Pasquale (Saskatoon Opera). Alan Brodie Since 1989 Vancouverbased lighting designer Alan Brodie has worked for regional theatres across Canada. He has created lighting for opera productions including Turn of the Screw (COC), Magic Flute (Vancouver Opera), Macbeth (Pacific Opera) and dance works including Emergence (National Ballet of Canada) and Plot Point (Nederlands Dans Theater). Alan has 10+ seasons at The Shaw Festival (Ragtime) and 5 seasons at Stratford (Wanderlust). Brian Johnson Brian has received numerous awards and accolades for his work as a director and as a cinematographer. He has won two Golden Sheaf awards, a Leo and been nominated for a Gemini for his work as a cinematographer on feature films such as On the Corner and The Delicate Art of Parking. Brian has recently completed direction of a one-hour anthology on BC artists for Knowledge Network. He is a frequent collaborator with Electric Company, The Hard Rubber Orchestra, and contemporary dance artists such as Katy McLeod–Harris, Josh Martin and Crystal Pite. His most recent work, Lornezo, Isabella and the Pot of Basil was programed at the 2011 New Forms Festival in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Miguel Nunes Miguel Nunes is one of Canada’s leading independent film sound artists. He has received numerous awards including 2 Gemini Awards and 10 Leo Awards. In addition, he has received 28 nominations including 2 Genie nominations, 24 Leo nominations and 1 Jessie Award nomination. Miguel is currently working on several film, television, video game and web series projects at his personal studio and in partnership with various sound major facilities. Peter Allen Peter is an active member of the Canadian League of Composers and the Canadian Music Centre. Peter has been commissioned to write numerous pieces which were often recorded and broadcast by the CBC, and has also been active in the jazz and rock communities as a player and a writer, and also as a church musician and composer of sacred music. To date Peter has scored over 100 films for a wide variety of Los Angeles and Canadian film companies including Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Warner Brothers, Twentieth Century Fox, Disney, Hallmark, Lifetime, Cinetel, the CBC and the National Film Board of Canada.

Jason Hand Recent theatre credits include A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Winter's Tale (Canadian Stage); The Trespassers (Stratford Shakespeare Festival); The Ugly One (Dora nomination), Tijuana Cure (Theatre Smash); and Man of Mode, Ivona Princess of Burgundia (George Brown College). Operas include Giulio Cesare (Orchestra London); Dido and Aeneas (Opera on the Avalon) and Turn of the Screw, La Bohème (Against the Grain). Jennifer Swan This past year, Jen stage managed Hansel & Gretel for Vancouver Opera in Schools and God of Carnage at the Belfry Theatre, and Assistant Stage Managed La Cage Aux Folles for the Vancouver Playhouse. The last time she was at Canadian Stage was in 2010 with Electric Company’s production of Studies in Motion. Prior to that, she toured here several times with Victoria’s Theatre SKAM, performing shows at the Tarragon, Theatre Passe Muraille, Dufferin Grove Park, and most memorably, the loading dock behind Honest Ed’s.

ABOUT THE SHOW CREATION HISTORY Tear the Curtain! was developed over several years beginning with a commission from Vancouver’s Arts Club Theatre in 2006. Inspired by the historic Stanley Theatre’s dual identity as a live theatre and former cinema, Electric Company set forth to create a piece that would live equally in both forms. As a result, the project was an unprecedented collaboration between artists from Vancouver's thriving film and theatre communities. Looking into the actual history of the venue revealed that the Stanley was originally conceived as a vaudeville theatre but, perhaps as a response to the growing popularity of the cinema and the advent of the “talkies,” plans had changed before construction even began. In 1930, the Stanley opened as a motion picture house with Lillian Gish’s first talking picture, a film adaptation of Ferenc Molnar’s stage play The Swan. These events from the theatre's past were woven into a fictional history, drawing the spectator into a liminal state between illusion and reality.

SYNOPSIS The script was written as a screenplay making the project particularly difficult to stage. This “beautiful problem” was an opportunity for innovation as the entire creative team reverse-engineered cinematic language for the live theatre. In February 2010, a three-week film shoot resulted in 70 minutes of edited footage – approximately half of a production where narrative flows seamlessly between stage and screen. Tear the Curtain! was shot almost entirely on location at the theatre, with scenes at the ticket window, in the lobby, the auditorium, in the wings, the catwalks, dressing rooms and under the stage.

Tear the Curtain! is set in a fictional Vancouver during the 1930s, when the popularity of the cinema and the advent of the "talkies" is threatening the existence of theatre. At the height of the Great Depression, local mob families are running the show - and deciding what gets shown. Pat Dugan controls the live venues and has his eyes on a plot of land on the Southside rise. The rival Pamploni family would prefer that property be developed as a movie theatre. Amidst that conflict, Tear the Curtain! follows the story of Alex Braithwaite, the city's most revered theatre critic

whose sense of identity begins to fracture after a chance encounter in the city park. Alex believes he has found the long lost Stanley Lee, director of an infamous, avant-garde theatre called The Empty Space. As Alex digs deeper into Lee's past he becomes convinced that a resurgence of Lee’s radically subversive ideas is what he needs to awaken minds, shatter complacency and save a threatened art form. Tear the Curtain! pitches a battle between stage and cinema but is ultimately a quest for an authentic expression of self in a world of imitations and stereotypes.

INSPIRATION AND HISTORICAL CONTEXT In its use of conventional cinematic language and genre, the project speaks to our fears of being caught in an irresistible cultural undertow stemming from Hollywood. But as a merging of avant-garde and “mainstream,” the piece experiments with the push and pull between surrealist strategies of disorientation and the well-worn screenwriting formulas that give the viewer a sense of order and catharsis. As Electric Company began to imagine a story set at the time of the Stanley’s opening, they were drawn to the work of the European avant-garde. The emergence of the surrealist movement in the ‘20s set out to challenge the accepted conventions of artistic practice and question the very function of art. The cinema was a

popular medium of expression for these artists with many in the avant-garde believing it was the perfect vehicle for transmitting new and radical ideas. Antonin Artaud was one such artist who began in the theatre, and came to view cinema as a powerful means of stirring the senses and engendering a primal reaction in the audience. Essentially, Artaud believed that Western civilization has resulted in our being removed from our authentic selves—our spiritual and animal connection to the world. He also believed that the function of art should be to restore this connection, activate our senses, and work directly upon our subconscious. The pursuit of authenticity resonated with the show's creators as being increasingly relevant in today’s media saturated world.

ABOUT ELECTRIC COMPANY 2012 marks Electric Company’s third visit to Toronto, following the live-cinematic No Exit (Nightwood Theatre, 2009) and Studies in Motion (Canadian Stage, 2010). The company is known throughout Canada for creating daring, original performances that are rich in spectacle and adventurous in form, strong in narrative, and developed with creative teams that often include experts in film, digital media, dance, visual art, and the sciences. Electric Company was originally formed as a collective in 1996 by Kim Collier, David Hudgins, Jonathon Young, and Kevin Kerr, who met while training at Vancouver’s Studio 58. Currently steered by artistic director Kevin Kerr, the company’s methodology has evolved over 15 years, but the creative process remains highly collaborative, blurring traditional boundaries between playwright, director, dramaturgy and design. With a growing body of work, Electric Company has created 15 mainstage productions, toured ten times (Canada, USA, UK), and made a feature film with CBC (The Score).
