Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno aka Valencian Institute of Modern Art is an important centre for modern & contemporary art in Spain. IVAM hosts continuous developments of art and photography of the twentieth century offering 10,000+ collection.
Considered as one of the 12 treasures of Spain, and built at the end of the former riverbed of the river Turia, which was drained and rerouted after a catastrophic flood in 1957, turning the old riverbed was turned into a picturesque sunken park. The City of Arts & Sciences is made up of 8 buildings, each of which represents arts and sciences.
Mercado Central is one of the oldest markets in Europe, where most of the vendors sell food items, souvenirs and other small scale items.
The Serranos Towers, largest Gothic city gateway in all of Europe were constructed at the end of the 14th century by Pere Balaguer as part of the city's fortification. They were once the main entrance to the city, and were pentagon-shaped, connected by a common gallery, and decorated with gothic designs on the borders. On the top there are parapets, and, around the entire structure, you can see the remains of the old moat. You can enjoy splendid views of the city and the river Turia from its terraces.
The National Ceramics Museum Gonzalez Marti is housed in a palace that dates from the 15th
century and refurbished in 1740 on rococo style with a magnificent alabaster entrance. The main door is crowned by a statue of the Virgin Mary, from which two streams of plentiful water flow, symbolizing the Júcar and the Turia rivers. The museum contains an important collection of ceramics, with prehistoric, Roman, Greek and Arab items.
The Museu de Belles Arts de València houses some 2,000 works, most dating from the 14th-17th centuries, including a self -portrait of Diego Velázquez, a St. John the Baptist by El Greco, Goya's Playing Children, Gonzalo Pérez's Altarpiece of Sts. Ursula, Martin and Antony and a Madonna with Writing Child and Bishop by the Italian Renaissance master Pinturicchio. It also has sections dedicated to sculptures of contemporary art and archaeological findings.
Plaza de Toros de Valencia is a bullring built between 1850 and 1859 following the neoclassical style and inspired in the civil roman architecture of the Flavian Amphitheatre Colosseum and the Arena of Nîmes in France.
The Llotja de la Seda is a Spanish property of cultural interest and was built between 1482 and 1533, this group of buildings was originally used for trading in silk and it has always been a centre for commerce. It is a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture. The grandiose Sala de Contratación (Contract or Trading Hall), in particular, illustrates the power and wealth of a major Mediterranean mercantile city in the 15th and 16th centuries. Hence it is considered a World Heritager Site by UNESCO as the site is of Universal Value.
Saint Mary's Cathedral or Valencia Cathedral was consecrated in 1238 by the first bishop of Valencia. One of the supposed Holy Chalices in the world is revered in one of this cathedral's chapels, often referred to as the true Holy Grail; It was the official papal chalice for many popes, and dates from the 1st century, and was given to the cathedral by king Alfonso V of Aragon in 1436.
