Selections from the Childress Collection

The Quilts of Sherri Lynn Wood Sponsorship available, contact Amanda Hines

Sponsored by Beyond the Reef

After unwittingly defying the dress code at Wiley Junior High at the age of 13 with a modest sundress of her own creation, Sherri Lynn Wood came to realize sewing as a source of creative expression, personal empowerment, and subversive resistance. This experience defined a trajectory of restorative social practice that she has explored, shared, and honored throughout her 30-year career as a quilt maker, artist, teacher, improviser, and author of The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters (2015, Abrams). Sherri Lynn Wood is based in Oakland, CA and is the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant for Painters and Sculptors, and a two-time MacDowell Colony Fellow. This special exhibit will include quilts and sculptural pieces that span the length of Sherri Lynn’s practice.

There is no other creative endeavor that threads together heritage and history, art and craft, need and comfort, quite like quilt-making in the United States. Quilters today utilize the medium to transgress boundaries, to memorialize their lives, and to materialize artistic vision. Master quilters of yesterday did the same, creating both modern and folky one-of-a-kind designs, incorporating political and social statements, and memorializing their loved ones. This special exhibit provides examples from the collection of Marjorie Childress, which contains 300 quilts spanning the 19th and 20th centuries and foreshadowing the modern and art quilt movements.

CHARITY CHALLENGE quiltcon.com/charity-quilt-challenge

The QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge requires participating guilds to work collaboratively to create quilts using a predetermined color palette and design style. The quilts will be sewn in their entirety by each guild, from design and piecing through quilting and binding, to produce complete twin sized quilts. After the quilts are exhibited at QuiltCon, guilds will donate their quilts to a charity in their community. The 2019 design theme is small piecing. You have probably noticed some modern quilters using small piecing in recent years. While it can be hard to define, small piecing would incorporate fabric pieces that are smaller than 1” in either width or length. So you might picture long, skinny strips, or little tiny squares, for example. The small piecing can be improvisationally pieced, traditionally pieced or foundation pieced. It’s up to you. Remember, the quilt doesn’t need to be exclusively small piecing. Small piecing must be an integral part of the design, but you can incorporate other modern design elements such as negative space, to make the challenge more approachable. Visit quiltcon.com/charity-quilt-challenge to learn how to participate!

LECTURES & WORKSHOPS

LECTURES

Supply lists

The QuiltCon lecture hall is always abuzz, with 45-minute lectures covering a wide variety of topics of interest to the modern quilter. The conference also includes an Awards Ceremony as well as a featured lecture by Sherri Lynn Wood.

Workshop attendees can access supply lists after September 1, 2018 on quiltcon.com. Some supplies are included in material fees (see next section).

In addition to the supply lists provided by instructors, students should bring a basic sewing kit to each class that includes a quilting ruler, scissors, pins and thread. If you would like your own cutting space, we recommend bringing a 12” x 12” cutting mat.

For a schedule of lectures, see pages 29-37.

WORKSHOPS QuiltCon workshops are hands-on courses. Students may be required to bring supplies or purchase supplies from instructors. Baby Lock, Bernina, Handi Quilter, Husqvarna Viking, Janome, Juki, and Pfaff sewing machines will be provided for all workshops that require use of a sewing machine. Limited irons, cutting mats and rotary cutters will be provided. Workshops take place in rooms with the following setups: domestic sewing machines, long arm machines (shared), handwork, drawing, surface design and design labs. Please review the workshop description carefully for the room type. Not all workshops use sewing machines! For a schedule of workshops, see pages 39-61. Six-hour workshops Six-hour workshops are six hours in length and run from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. with a two-hour lunch/lecture break from 12-2 p.m.

Material fees •

Required and optional materials fees for workshops are noted in the course descriptions.

Workshop descriptions list what is included with the fee.

Material fees are payable directly to the instructor at the start of class.

QuiltCon will not accept payments for material fees.

The types of payment the instructor accepts will be sent via email with supply lists in late 2018, but every instructor accepts cash.

The course code for each workshop is the unique identifier given to each course. This piece of information is extremely helpful during the registration process to allow you to search for the courses you want to take!

Three-hour workshops Three-hour workshops are three hours in length. Morning workshops run from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., afternoon workshops run from 2 p.m.-5 p.m., and evening workshops run from 6 p.m.-9 p.m.

SELECTIONS FROM THE CHILDRESS EXHIBIT

BUILDING A PERSONALIZED QUILTING PRACTICE

Marjorie Childress

Melanie Tuazon

The Childress Collection contains approximately 300 quilts collected by Marjorie Childress since 2000, and continues to grow. Select pieces from the collection are on special exhibit at QuiltCon 2019. The collection spans the 19th and 20th centuries, and is evocative of today’s modern quilt movement. Hear Marjorie speak about the genesis of the collection and some of her favorite pieces. Visit her website at www.anonymousquilt. com.

Each maker has their own joy and stress in the quilting process. This inclusive lecture will offer a framework for thinking about your quilting practice that emphasizes the aspects that are most rewarding and joyful. A quilting practice can be so much more than a hobby, and we’ll talk about why people say quilting is the best therapy. What keeps us coming back for more, and what makes a project stall? How can we do more of what we love?

29

FREE-MOTION IMPACT Christina Cameli You don’t have to be a better quilter to get better quilting, you just have to know which choices have the most impact. We compare and constrast samples of similarly quilted pieces to see how small adjustments can dramatically change what the viewer sees in our quilting. Walk away with new awareness of why some quilting wows and other quilting feels flat.

TRADITIONAL BLOCK, MODERN QUILT: DESIGNING WITH NEGATIVE SPACE

BEYOND MODERN TRADITIONALISM

Mary Fons

Sylvia Schaefer

What does the word “feminism” mean? Do quilters have to be feminists? Are quilts inherently “feminist” objects? In this lecture, popular QuiltCon lecturer and Quiltfolk editor Mary Fons attempts the impossible: to talk to a roomful of quilters about the “F word.” In her signature style, Mary will take you on a fast-paced, deep-dive overview of what the F word has meant in the past vis a vis quilters; what it means (and doesn’t mean) now; and what the F word could mean within our quilting ecosystem. Note: No snacks, secret agendas, or solutions will be offered; there will, however, be jokes, controversy, and a lot to think about.

One of the hallmarks of modern quilting is the use of extensive negative space, but how do you arrange your negative space to make a cohesive quilt design? In this lecture, we will explore different ways to approach designing a quilt with negative space. We’ll walk through the design process step by step, starting with a traditional quilt block and ending with a finished modern quilt. This breaks the design process into manageable chunks that you will have the confidence to explore on your own later. Fabric choices and quilting options for enhancing the negative space will also be discussed. Whether you haven’t had the confidence to design your own modern quilts yet or you’re an experienced modern quilter, you’ll leave full of new ideas on how to use negative space.

Modern traditionalism in quilting is a wonderful way to honor the bridge between the past and the present. But there are so many other craft traditions we can be inspired by: knitting, weaving, crochet, needlepoint, even pottery and woodcarving. In this lecture, I’ll discuss ways we as quilters can create modern blocks that honor traditions beyond the quilt world, focusing on three thriving craft traditions in the American South.

THE “F” WORD: WHY DON’T QUILTERS TALK ABOUT FEMINISM?

American Cotton: Farm to Quilt will unveil the full story of the cotton plant over the last 100 years and its slow journey from America’s cotton patch to domestic textile mills and to the hands of quilters. Walk in the shoes of American cotton farmers then and now --- and follow the path of a boll of cotton from a seed in the ground to the cotton gin, to Southern cotton mills, and ultimately to finished quilts. Early in the 20th century, American cotton textiles were all the rage, then came international competition, and synthetics. Relive the era before the American cotton mills closed and celebrate the efforts of one company to bring back American made quilting fabric.

Japan’s textile history will come alive as you learn about two epic plants and how they forever changed the world: cotton and indigo. Indigo is native to Japan and for centuries, it has inspired weavers, dyers, merchants and artists. Indigo is especially symbiotic with cotton. Hear the stories behind traditional cotton folk textiles such as boro, sashiko, katazome, kasuri, & chusen, a time-honored traditional screen printing method used to make cotton yukata (kimono) and tenugi (hand towel). Take an exclusive tour of Japan’s elite textile printing mills and understand why Japan is considered the world’s finest producer of quilting cotton. See the stunning quilts being made today with these very old and very new textiles and meet the Japanese quilt artists who are designing fabric for quilting.

NOT A MOMENT, IT’S A MOVEMENT: THE HISTORY & FUTURE OF ACTIVIST QUILTS

TECHNOLOGY IN QUILT DESIGN Daisy Aschehoug Would you like to modify or create your own quilt designs? Are you pitching ideas to magazines or book publishers? Digital technology often promises something new and exciting, so it’s helpful to have a plan when choosing a tool that does what you want with a price tag that matches your budget. During this lecture, Daisy will cover the basics of integrating analog skills and digital tools. With so many digital tools to choose from, she’ll compare the popular classics with the newest options, and give advice on how to pick the technology that works for you.

Laura McDowell Hopper The Social Justice Sewing Academy, founded in 2015 by Sara Trail, has taken the quilt community by storm. Through quilt block making programs, multiday sewing instruction, and social justice education, SJSA engages young people in the long tradition of activist quiltmaking. With each new SJSA workshop, students learn to look at quilts as a means of voicing their hopes for the future or for reflecting on injustice in their communities. Learn about Sara Trail’s inspiration for founding SJSA, how her workshops engage young quilters, and look to the future of SJSA and activist quilting.

MODERN QUILTS FROM MY GRANDMOTHER Sarah Bond This lecture is part quilt history, part family history and part Modern Quilt inspiration. Jane Arthur Bond was born a slave in 1828 in Kentucky. Louvinia Clarkson Cleckley was born a slave in 1858 in South Carolina. Anna Gibson Bond was born in 1869. Ruth Clement Bond was born in 1904. What do these women, some born more than a century ago, have to do with Modern Quilts? Each made and/or designed quilts. All took ownership of their lives and their creativity. Each have provided enormous inspiration for Sarah Bond in her life and in her quilts. Join Sarah to see how these women and their work are woven into the fabric of her quilts and how her grandmothers are a part of every modern quilt she makes today.

FEATURED LECTURE PATCHWORK AS RESTORATIVE SOCIAL PRACTICE

THE WOMEN IN SCIENCE QUILT PROJECT Laura McDowell Hopper A curator and a scientist walked into a classroom...and made a quilt. Quilters Laura McDowell Hopper, curator at the Pick Museum of Anthropology at Northern Illinois University, and Courtney Gallaher, science professor at NIU, partnered to create a unique college classroom experience centered on quiltmaking. Forty college undergraduates in a class called “Women in Science” were taught design skills and basic sewing. The result was a quilt that allowed young people to honor overlooked female contributions to science using an art form that was historically overlooked in fine art fields. The talk concludes with an excerpt of the “Women in Science Quilt Project” documentary created by award-winning filmmaker Randy Caspersen.

34

Sherri Lynn Wood After unwittingly defying the dress code at Wiley Junior High at the age of 13 with a modest sundress of her own creation, Sherri Lynn Wood came to realize sewing as a source of creative expression, personal empowerment, and subversive resistance. This experience defined a trajectory of restorative social practice that Sherri Lynn has explored, shared, and honored throughout her career as a quilt maker, artist, teacher, author, improviser, activist and healer.

FABRIC SELECTION FOR PAPER PIECING Amy Friend There are lots of things to consider when choosing fabrics for paper piecing. Will it be possible to fussy cut? Will the fabric be cut up with lots of seams? Do you need to keep it directional? Let’s talk about how to choose fabrics to make really successful paper pieced designs. We will cover some of the pitfalls of fabric selection and how to edit our choices. Consider florals, dots, textured solids, stripes, border prints, directional prints, fussy cuts, scale, and contrast and how they work for paper piecing.

INFUSING MODERN INTO MACHINE QUILTING Christa Watson This informative lecture is full of examples from previous QuiltCons, demonstrating how the modern aesthetic can apply to the machine quilting process. Learn how negative space, minimalism, graphic geometry, improvisation and other hallmarks of the modern aesthetic can be incorporated into your machine quilting work. Attendees will gain a better understanding of why many modern quilters choose to employ an abundance of straight line and “industrial looking” designs rather than quilting overly ornate and perfectly symmetrical motifs. Suggestions on how to incorporate graphic and linear free-motion quilting as an alternative to straightline quilting will also be explored.

IMPROV HAND QUILTING Heidi Parkes This lecture isn’t about piecing quilts. It’s specifically on hand quilting, and allowing that quilting to evolve as Heidi works, without chalk, tape, or glue. Heidi tends to keep a ‘feeling’ in mind when she quilt, and allow the work to evolve from there. Explore aesthetics, approach, and the art of balancing freedom and control. Heidi will discuss basting, knots, tools, workspace, thread choice and stitch style, and most importantly: Improvisation. The content will be centered on Heidi’s quilts and experience.

YOGASUN YOGA FLOW Heidi Parkes Yoga Room Start your morning with a yoga flow/vinyasa sequence. The class will focus on building strength, balance, and flexibility, and will gently wake up the body for our final day at QuiltCon! An audio recording will be emailed to students after the class for use in your home practice. Mats are optional; you can also use a hotel towel. YOGASUN Sunday, February 24 7:45 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.
