A Message from Birmingham Children’s Hospital For over 150 years Birmingham Children’s Hospital has been an integral and treasured part of the city’s landscape. Treating one in five children from the ten districts of Birmingham every year, it is an institution that has touched everybody in Birmingham at some point in their lives and this is why it is the beneficiary of The Big Hoot 2015. “I am so excited at the thought of hundreds of vibrant owls swooping into Birmingham to fill it with colour. The innovative ‘Big Hoot’ offers families a free and fun day out, exploring areas of our city they may never have visited before, with the added bonus of helping them to stay active. This is important to us, because at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, we believe leading an active lifestyle is one of the best things you can do for your family’s health, and we are committed to doing all we can to promote it. The Big Hoot A Celebration of Creativity in Birmingham Across the region, behind closed doors, an invasion was being planned. Businesses, artists and communities knew the secret - and of course the children were getting ready too. Then, one by one, they came. A street corner here, a shopping centre there, until the people awoke one morning and found them - over 210 owls with a story to tell... With 89 giant owls to see - each one individually created by artists from Birmingham and beyond - and over 120 owlets created as part of The Little Hoot education programme, this owl spotting experience is inspiring fun for everyone and is completely FREE. Follow the trail from the city centre to Sutton Coldfield, Winson Green to Kings Heath and many places in between and enjoy beautiful open spaces, inspiring buildings and Birmingham’s cultural heritage along the way. Enjoy cartoon owls; night owls; wise owls; celebrity owls; jewellery owls; the ‘Owl and the Pussycat’; owls from the pyramids of Egypt, Amazonian Rainforests and outer space; owls that celebrate Birmingham’s landmark architecture, history, people, places, cultural diversity and more… All the giant owls have been generously sponsored by companies and organisations and at the end of the trail, they will be auctioned to raise money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

A very big thank you to everyone who has embraced this project - your collective creativity is nothing short of ‘owl-some’!
The enthusiasm and commitment of teachers and pupils to be at the core of this unique cultural experience has already propelled it into being Britain’s biggest school public art event of the year.
Over 25,000 children have spent many months experiencing and enjoying the magic of the visual arts while undertaking their own fundraising activities for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. All their individually designed owlet sculptures are displayed in ‘parliaments’ in 18 venues across the city. (Please see map overleaf).
The Little Hoot is a citywide education programme which has engaged young people from nursery, primary, secondary and special schools together with a college and four community groups.
As you are out and about tracking down the owls, look out for over 120 smaller owlet sculptures.

Swoop on into the neighbourhoods of Birchfield, Bordesley Green, Handsworth, Nechells, Erdington, Soho, Ward End, Winson Green and Yardley to discover lots of interesting facts, including Charlie Chaplin’s connection to the city!
Some projects have focused on local history, others looked to the future, or explored the more recent past - such as the inspiring consequences of the demolishment of Perry Common in the late 1980s/ early 90s. One team worked with award-winning a cappella quintet, Black Voices, while another took inspiration from Soho House, once the home of influential industrialist, Matthew Boulton, and a meeting place for some of the greatest minds of the 18th century.
Birmingham City Council Culture Commissioning Service - with match-funding by businesses and grants - have supported 10 arts projects to enable communities to participate in this special event. Located in the heart of Birmingham’s neighbourhoods, teams of residents from local children and young people to adults of all ages have taken part in workshops led by experienced artists to explore, celebrate and share the cultural heritage of the city’s residents through the decoration of Big Hoot owl sculptures.

National Express Day Saver adult £4.20, child £2.20; family/group (6 people, including one or two adults with children aged 5-15) £8. Buy tickets on the bus. At any point on the route.

Buy tickets from station ticket offices or ticket machines. Any station between Redditch, New Street and Lichfield.

A short walk is required from each station to the owl locations. You can also combine bike and train. Bikes can be carried on the Cross-City line on off-peak trains (no need to book) and Brompton folding bikes can be carried at any time.

The No.11 (outer circle) bus route is one of the longest in the UK at 27 miles. There are regular buses in both clockwise (11C) and anti-clockwise directions (11A). Approximate travel times between stops:
