MAYOR’S MESSAGE:
Dear Residents: A few weeks ago, many of us were enjoying a quiet Saturday afternoon when our town was suddenly rocked by the explosion and fire on the White Horse Pike. As you probably know, one of our residents was seriously injured in that fire and a number of our other residents lost all of their possessions. As a group of citizens with a true spirit of community, I ask that you please keep these residents in your thoughts. Additionally, the Haddon Heights Good Neighbors have been accepting donations to help these residents. If you would like to donate, checks can be made payable to Haddon Heights Good Neighbors and mailed to or dropped off at Borough Hall.
I want to take a moment to thank all of the police, fire, ambulance, and other personnel who responded so quickly to this incident. Their efforts undoubtedly saved lives and property. We had assistance from all of our neighboring towns. Some responders even came from places like Camden and Pine Hill to help. I particularly want to recognize our Assistant Fire Chief, Frank Lafferty, our Police Chief, Richard Kinkler, and our Police Captain, Michael Valvardi, for the exemplary leadership they all showed during this challenging situation. A number of projects have either begun or will be beginning shortly to improve our town’s recreational facilities. A restora-
tion project is underway at our athletic complex on Devon Avenue to install new grass; this will result in a complete renovation of the field so that it can be safer and more durable for our children. During this project, it will be necessary to close the field from time to time. Please keep an eye out for signs announcing these maintenance periods. Over at the Barr Complex, there is a new scoreboard,
and work is ongoing to improve the dugouts. After the baseball season, the fields will be renovated, primarily to make them safer. These are recreational improvements that our children will benefit from. We are also continuing to improve our town’s overall appearance with sidewalk improvements and lighting. Projects like these help keep our town ‘walkable’ and help our business community by improving pedestrian access. We have some exciting new businesses opening up in town. We look forward to a prosperous business district as we are gaining shops that will likely attract out -of-town customers. This should benefit all of our merchants. Please remember to visit our own town shops and services before heading out of Haddon
Do You Need the Spring “Function Better Program”? As the weather warms and the flowers bloom, there is an increasing desire to spend time outdoors. Gardening activities, walks in the park, outdoor grilling and playing games with young children are some of the activities that many people enjoy each spring. If you are having trouble with pain, endurance, bending, reaching, squatting and other movements that these activities may require, the “Function Better Program” at WORK-UP PHYSICAL THERAPY may be just what you need in order to have a fantastic spring season! The “Function Better Program” at WORK-UP PHYSICAL THERAPY emphasizes muscle strengthening and stretching exercises, activities to decrease pain, conditioning exercises on equipment as well as personalized instruction to promote safe and independent function. After completion of the “Function Better Program”, many people report that they are pain free and able to lead a more active and independent lifestyle. WORK-UP PHYSICAL THERAPY is conveniently located at 135 East Atlantic Avenue in Haddon Heights (just off Station Avenue). Due to high demand, slots for the upcoming spring session of the “Function Better Program” are limited and filling quickly. To reserve a slot for the program, call (856) 546-0377.
At WORK-UP PHYSICAL THERAPY, you will find that:

Please know that we will not ask you to contribute more than we absolutely need to run the town. With the nice weather and more daylight, our children will be walking and playing outdoors. Please remember to slow down while driving throughout town to ensure everyone’s safety. Have a wonderful spring! Your Mayor, Edward S. Forte, Jr.

SHADE TREE COMMISSION NEWS
Spring is just around the corner and it’s time to think about planting trees again. This year we will be celebrating ‘Arbor Week’ from Monday, April 22nd to Friday, April 26th. The Haddon Heights Shade Tree Commission and the Haddon Heights Environmental Commission are partnering to conduct a town wide tree inventory during this week. The Tree Inventory will become part of the Borough’s State approved Tree Management Plan and will help us better identify the condition of our town wide tree cover. The inventory will assist the Borough in planning for future tree maintenance, as well as develop a species list for tree planting. The inventory will be done by volunteers. These Volunteers will be asked to inventory one or two blocks in their neighborhood, whenever convenient, during Arbor Week. If you are interested in spending a couple of hours outside looking up, please call Roni Olizi at 856.546.9443. You do not need to be a tree expert to help. In celebration of Arbor Day, the Shade Tree Commission will be planting trees along the Borough right-of-ways. If you would like a tree planted in front of your home, please contact Roni Olizi at
[email protected] or DPW at 546.2580 before April 8th.

Haddon Heights Community Gardeners Anticipate Summer Produce The recent teasers of spring-like weather reminded local gardeners that spring planting is on the horizon. For participants in the Haddon Heights Community Garden, a few changes are raising expectations for a better growing season. Gardeners recently attended Haddon Heights Council caucus meetings, expressing support of the Garden. They also met with Councilman Steve Berryhill to plan for 2013. Gardeners are especially pleased that installation of a reliable water supply source is expected by mid-June. “Second Saturday” events are scheduled for each second Saturday of the month, April through September, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Returning and prospective gardeners are encouraged to stop by the Garden on Glover Avenue, meet other gardeners and lend a hand in preparing the common garden areas for the new season. They should bring their own tools: rake, shovel, trowel, hand pruners and gloves. Returning gardeners may renew an annual lease of their 10 x 10 plot for
$25, and prospective gardeners for 2013 may apply for a plot lease at the same rate. Preference will be shown for returning gardeners. It is expected that 10 plots will be available for new leases this spring, on a first-come, first-served basis, until all plots are leased. During July, August and September, the community gardeners plan to continue cooperating with Haddon Heights Good Neighbors with weekly donations of tomatoes, peppers and squash to residents within our community. by Jodi Clark

ART SALE! As big city libraries and art museums do, the Haddon Heights Library will be dispossessing some of its duplicate pictures. Last summer, through a grant received by former Head Librarian Bob Hunter, we met with an archivist who reviewed the holdings of the History Room of the Library. The archivist recommended disposing of duplicates and any pictures not depicting Haddon Heights. In her words, “Even if it’s a Picasso, if it’s not of Haddon Heights, it goes.” Look for this “discarded” art sale to take place Saturday, May 11th during ‘Down by the Station Day’ from 10 a.m. Art will be featured in local store windows and at the Library from May 1st on. All proceeds go to the Haddon Heights Library. You might bag a Monet!! For more information, please call Councilwoman Rose Fitzgerald at 547-3950. The Heights Report

Haddon Heights Good Neighbors Haddon Heights Good Neighbors 625 Station Avenue Haddon Heights, NJ 08035 Tragedy Brings Community Together On February 23, 2013, the unthinkable happened. A gas explosion rocked a house with five apartments at 101 White Horse Pike, leaving two Haddon Heights residents injured. A total of six people lost not only their homes, but all their possessions. An outpouring of concern and support came in to the Haddon Heights Police Department, who asked Haddon Heights Good Neighbors to receive funds on behalf of the victims of the blast. For those of you who would like to contribute, please make your check payable to HHGN and note in the memo line “101 WHP.” We’ll ensure that your donation will be designated to aid the residents of 101 White Horse Pike. As always, thank you, people of Haddon Heights (and surrounding areas) for your compassion and generosity! Who are we? Our Post Office Bob Hunter, Chair of the Historic Preservation Commission, Councilwoman Rose Fitzgerald who also serves on the Planning Board and attends HHB&PA meetings and Joan Rossler, representing the Heights Heritage League and Historical Society attended National Preservation Lobby Day on February 26, 2013. During a day of lobbying various New Jersey Congressmen for preservation funding, we met with our own congressman and resident, Rob Andrews. One of the topics we discussed was the changes in the service at our post office and our fear that this historic post office will be closed. Congressman Andrews shares our concern and stated that, as yet, no decisions have been made
as to which post offices will close. Congressman Andrews will set up a meeting between Borough officials and local post office authorities. Of course, every town in America wants its post office to stay open but the Haddon Heights Post Office is especially important because, first, it was built by the Postal Service during the Great Depression, is part of our Station Avenue Historic District and the anchor of our “main street.” However, our post office uniquely contains a bas-relief sculpture, ‘’The Letter’’ by Isamu Noguchi, one of the most significant American sculptors of the 20th century. It is one of the most important federal commissions by a worldrenowned artist to grace
a suburban post office. Installed in March 1939, the sculpture is a broadfaced full-figured woman who can be admired as a lyrical abstraction of gentle curves. ‘’The Letter’’ remains in its original place in the Haddon Heights Post Office above the Postmaster’s door. Bob Hunter will host a discussion about the Haddon Heights Post Office and “The Letter” during Down by the Station Day, Saturday, May 11th at one o’clock. We will keep residents posted on the Borough’s website regarding the results of our meeting.

WANTED: Fresh Fruits and Vegetables! It is February 21st and the temperature is around freezing cold! I don’t know about you but I am desperately missing the Farmer’s Markets that we are lucky enough to have here in Camden County right about now! Not because I’m trying to promote our Market here in town, but because I really miss the seasonal produce and goods that the Markets offer. I miss the live music, and the vendors who support the markets week after week. I miss my kids running up and down with popcorn and strawberries in their hands at our Market, feeling safe in a place that has become a 2nd home to them and many others on Sunday mornings. Since the local Markets began closing for the Winter I guess didn’t realize how much we would miss them. It’s normal to take for granted that things will always be there until they are gone. Anyway…
That being said I am happy to announce that our Haddon Heights Farmers Market Administration is anxiously preparing for season 3 of our Market to re-open in the heart of town on Station and Atlantic Ave. The HHFM will again be every Sunday starting May 5th 2013. (10 am-1 pm) Last years Market was a great success with the community and all those involved, and we are determined to make it even better in 2013. We truly feel that our Market is something that is all too important not to continue as it embodies such a sense of community. During the off-season HHFM Administration has been meeting with surrounding Market Director’s in Camden County with the goal in mind that working together can make all local markets more consistent and successful. The HHFM will continue be comprised of
local farmers, artisans, and local businesses that participate in the weekly event. Please look for our website to launch, which will be linked to the town website, and our facebook page (Handle-Haddon Heights Farmers Market) so you can befriend us there. This market is already becoming a new tradition and continued support is what it needs to thrive so spread the word. We look forward to seeing you this Spring! Joseph Gentile HHFM Director

HEIGHTS BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Village Cheese Shop
The Village Cheese Shop 516 Station Avenue Haddon Heights, NJ 08035 856-310-0827
This fall, Brett and Ethel Harrison will celebrate thirty-six years of marriage, a feat that is rare by today's estimates. But even rarer still, this spring they also celebrate the twenty-sixth anniversary of their ownership of the Village Cheese Shop. Any couple who can survive working side-by-side every day and can still say they love what they do and who they are with is a gem. Brett and Ethel purchased the Village Cheese Shop in Haddonfield in 1987 and transformed it into a true mom-and-pop shop - Ethel does the baking, Brett the cooking and together they've been surrogate parents to many Haddonfield and Haddon Heights alumni over the years, while
raising their own two kids, Gwen and Charlotte. Moving their business to Haddon Heights in 1997 enabled them to double the size of the store and expand their products beyond just cheeses and a small lunch counter to a dinning space that can accommodate parties up to seventy-five guests. They cater on or off-premises parties, create gift baskets, serve breakfast and lunch and have many fun and unique gift items like decorative flags, colonial candles, ornaments and holiday ware. Brett also provides classes in cheeses through the Haddonfield Adult School so you can learn how to prepare an enticing cheese tray of your own. Other upcoming classes hosted by the Vil-
lage Cheese Shop include a beer and cheese course, a wine and cheese course and a special class on Wisconsin Cheeses (not just cheddar)! Haddon Heights has become a second home to the Harrisons, Ethel is now the treasurer of the Haddon Heights Business and Professional Association and Brett serves as Vice President as well as a chair on the Streetscape Committee. They believe in the power of a small town and are champions of becoming involved on a local level to create global change. Their daughter, Charlotte, works just across the street at Michael’s Jewelers and Gemologist and Gwen lives in the apartment above the shop – keeping the family close and thriving.
Yours Forever Bridal & Tuxedos Yours Forever Bridal & Tuxedos has found a new home on the corner of Station and East Atlantic Avenues. A soft opening is scheduled for the month of March which will be followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony and a grand opening in late spring. Nancy and Mark Borodynko have been the owners of Yours Forever Bridal & Tuxedos, LLC since May, 2003. Their original bridal boutique was located in Voorhees, N.J. The couple has moved to Haddon Heights to fulfill their desire to feature their boutique in a downtown area. “My husband, Mark and I are very excited to open our new store in
such a warm and charming community as Haddon Heights” says Nancy. “After 16 years in the bridal business my perspective on how to serve contemporary brides has evolved,” Nancy stated. Yours Forever Bridal now allows the bride to purchase from existing stock. All gowns have been carefully chosen by Nancy from a variety of markets. An advantage to selecting a gown from existing stock is brides no longer have wait six to nine months to receive their gown. Brides will also avoid extravagant fees often encountered by rushing a gown in from another state. “With my day-to-day experience over these many years, I have developed an
excellent eye for fitting a bride with the best gown for her” Nancy said. We provide a large selection of gowns in sizes 4 through 20 in many shades of white, ivory and champagne. The best news of all is our pricing policy. We offer the gowns 10 to 30 percent less than expected retail prices. In this very difficult economy, our brides can look like a million but spend less than a thousand. Bridal accessories, formal gowns and tuxedos are also available at Yours Forever Bridal & Tuxedos. You will find the staff at Yours Forever Bridal & Tuxedos warm, welcoming and professional.

Haddon Heights Field Hockey
A New Look for Our Hometown Fields! Thanks to widespread support of the HHYA’s fundraising initiatives, “Operation Home Run/Field of Dreams”, Phase 1 of the major renovations planned for the Barr Complex on West Atlantic Avenue, has been completed. A brand new scoreboard with a wireless remote was purchased for Memorial Field. It has been installed in right center field so that it can be used by both the baseball and softball programs. Every player, from beginners to high school, will benefit from the ten completely renovated dugouts at every field. From new and enlarged concrete pads, to the benches, to the roofs, the upgrades provide enhanced safety and a place for “team talk”. Next in the lineup will be lights for Major Field, higher fencing and eventually new infield configurations for Major
and Minor Fields. The HHYA is grateful for the donations and efforts of their member’s families, local businesses and the community. Your continued generosity is appreciated so Phase II and III can be completed.
Haddon Heights Field Hockey Club runs a recreation field hockey program for girls in grades 3-8. This is an open club and we welcome girls from the surrounding areas. Registration for Summer Camp ‘13 and Fall Field Hockey ‘13 will open May 1, 2013 at www.heightsfieldhockey.org . Forms can be downloaded and returned to 701 Station Avenue, P.O. Box 255, Haddon Heights, NJ 08035. In person registration will take place on Saturday, May 11 from 9-12 at the SOF building on Atlantic Avenue (old NJ Water Company
Building near baseball fields). Register early to secure a space! Questions? E-mail us at heightshockey@hotmail. com.
