“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give them eternal life.” John 10:27

Great Starts – Strong Finishes As I sit at my desk writing this article to you - I wonder what is in store for us here at Our Savior. It seems as if the sky is the limit. Actually with God our potential is limitless. But where do we want to go and how do we want to get there? Well, these are questions that I would like to find out sooner rather than later. The old saying rings true in my mind; “If you don’t know where you are going how will you know when you get there.” God has gifted all of us with certain abilities and talents and He brings us together so that we can pool our skills to accomplish great things on His behalf. In planning for the future we must realize that some events that begin on a high note don’t always end that way. Therefore, we must pray for a great start, a strong finish and joy throughout the journey. There are many examples within our own lives that have great starts but then somewhere along the line they fizzle out. Think about it this way… you purchase a new car – love that great new car smell - but in a few months the smell is gone and the thrill of your new car has disappeared. It’s dirty, always needing gas and what once made us proud is now just something that gets us from point A to point B. Some marriages are the same way. Statistics say within ten years almost 45% of the marriages that happen today will end in divorce. What once was sweet as love has turned sour. What once was “to death do we part” has turned to un-reconcilable differences. We seem to lose or destroy all that is good in our lives. You see, it is our sinful nature at work within us that tries to tear us up, down and apart. Look at the Israelites in Egypt; they had a great start crossing the Red Sea with all of Pharaoh’s army dead in the Sea. They set a course for the Promised Land. But their sinful nature got the best of them and they had to wander 40 years in the wilderness. Only 2 men who left Egypt entered the Promised Land, Joshua and Caleb (Numbers 14:29). But, the strong finish was when they crossed the Jordan River and began to inhabit the land. Some would say that Jesus didn’t have a great start being born in a stable but others would say that humility is a great place to begin. For us Christ’s strong finish was the greatest event in all of history. Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, He bowed His head and gave up His Spirit (John 19:30). With Christ’s humble beginnings and sacrificial death – His great finish gave us the ability to dream big & achieve even more than we either desire or deserve. We ourselves find our great start through baptism and our strong finish when either Christ returns or when we pass on from this side of eternity to the next. One of our problems is that we are both saint and sinner at the same time and we can be like the Israelites who stumbled in the middle of their journey. So in the next few weeks and during the upcoming months let’s think beyond the stars. Let us set a course that may seem almost unachievable then through prayer, using our gifts and talents, let us go forward in faith and enjoy the journey because nothing is impossible for God. May that which seems impossible in your life be given over to God who makes all things possible – to Him be all the glory. In His service and yours: Pastor Mike

A Thought on Worship -Author Mark Surburg It's a radical notion for many Christians - on Sunday you get up and go to the Divine Service. Because that is what Christians do. If you recognize your sin and believe in what Christ gives in His Means of Grace, it's really not hard to understand. If you don't, than staying home is very easy. The problem is that this is not the act of faith. Faith does not say "no" to Christ's gifts. When Christians stay home on Sunday for no reason, Satan rejoices and plots how to make it even easier for them to do this next Sunday....

From Your Elder What a beautiful time of the year. Holiday music has already started playing, stores are decorated, Black Friday has come and gone and the Christmas tree is all set up in Church. This is the time of year when we look around and are grateful for what each one of us has. Our health, our children, each other and our religion. But most importantly, we have our Church. Where would we be without our Church? In this day and age, there are still some Countries that Churches are still not allowed. Religious persecution is still going on. During Advent, we have the chance to get ready for the greatest day that ever happened. The birth of our Savior. Christmas Day is really what it is all about. No other day in the history of the world is more important than this day. It started everything. For this, we are grateful. This day really matters. Everything else in life pales in comparison to this day. We come together in Church on this day to celebrate the Birthday of Jesus Christ. What a great day. Think what it would be like to have been around way back then. To ride into Jerusalem and visit the manger. To bring gifts to the Christ child. To actually witness this scene must have been great. I don’t think any words can actually describe it. But, being there, had to be a chance in a lifetime. At the end of the day, sit back in your chair and look around and say to yourself, “I am so happy for everything that Christ has given me. It is a great day to be alive.” We all have something in our lives that makes us happy. It is up to each one of us to see this. In the end, it all comes down to this. I wish each and every one of you a very joyous Christmas and Holiday Season. I pray that we all have a great New Year also.

In Christ’s name I pray, Herb Steck Your Elder.

Summer Servant Event – It’s official! We have 17 youth who will be attending the Summer Servant Event the week of July 6 – 12! Our location is Birmingham, Alabama! Please keep us in your prayers, as well as the people of Birmingham, as we prepare and fundraise for this event.

Advent Dinner – The Youth of Our Savior will be hosting the Advent Dinner on Wednesday, December 4. Come and join us for a spaghetti dinner and help support us as we raise money for our trip to Alabama this summer.

T-Shirt Fundraiser – Have you noticed the red Our Savior t-shirts the youth and a few of the adults have been wearing? We got them for our trip to the National Youth Gathering last summer. We have had a great response to them, and have had many requests for us to offer them to the congregation. Sundays in December, starting December 8, the youth will be selling these t-shirts in the gym between services! They will be red, like the youth shirts, but if you would like yellow or gray, we can special order them for you! They are $12 each and make wonderful Christmas presents or stocking stuffers.  Support the youth AND promote Our Savior with this great t-shirt!

TJ’s Pizza Fundraiser Sale – Beginning December 15, the youth will be taking orders for TJ’s Pizza and desserts. We will take orders through January 12, with delivery of the items by January 29th, just in time for Super Bowl Sunday on February 2. Youth can pick up an order form from DCE Mark at any time. Thank you for your support of the Our Savior Lutheran Youth Ministry and for our Servant Event to Birmingham!

All youth and friends are welcome to join us for both worship, and for Youth Night! There will NOT be Youth Night on Christmas Day, nor on New Year’s Day. We will begin meeting at 7 p.m. again on January 8.

One Gift I don’t know about you, but every year I promise myself I won’t get caught up in the commercialized chaos and stress of the season. I promise I won’t spend endless hours looking for the perfect gift only to realize I never even opened my Bible. I promise I won’t spend weeks getting the decorations hung just right and then forget to do our Advent Calendar with my family. I promise I won’t kill myself and my husband so our home looks like the front of a Hallmark card while inside we’re snapping at each other and forgetting to show grace and love to the people we care about the most. I used to get so worked up and stressed over commitments in ministry, at home, at Conner’s school, family, etc. that I would never really stop and spend some time in the moment. I thought, ‘I have to do it all or Christmas won’t be perfect’. Maybe being a mom changed me, maybe it’s because I live with a husband and a son who don’t put unattainable expectations on me (I do that to myself), maybe it’s just the fact I’m a little older and possibly wiser, but these days I simply know that no matter how much or how little I prepare, Christmas will still come and it will be wonderful. No matter how many decorations there are or how much money was spent, we will get up on that glorious morning and realize a long-promised Savior came to die for us.

After more than 15 years of Christmas Programs I have ALSO learned that no matter how many times I run up and down the steps at church to find the right costumes or how many hours I spend gathering all the props, the stable, and everything else we need for the program, the children will make that Christmas Story come to life in a way that us adults never could. I’ve learned it doesn’t matter if there’s four Wisemen and only two townspeople, those little faces and their child-like faith will teach me and so many others that what really matters at Christmas won’t happen. Because it already happened so many years ago in a little manger in the dead of night. There were no blinking Christmas lights, only the light of a small lantern. There was no fire in the fireplace to warm those gathered around, only some dry straw to pile up. There was no Christmas music playing softly in the background, only the sounds of the animals in the barn. There wasn’t the smell of cinnamon or evergreen, but the smell of cows, chickens, and whatever other guests they shared the stable with. And gifts? There was only one, a small baby resting amidst the straw and the animals. A baby that was the King of Kings. A baby that began his life in a make-shift cradle and would end it nailed to a heavy wooden cross. He IS the gift, He IS the peace, He is Christmas, He is Jesus.

So Happy Birthday Jesus and may we never grow too old to remember what it means to have that child-like faith in You and to truly enjoy Christmas like children. To celebrate with You, in You, and celebrate YOU!

Games, Lunch, Christmas Shopping, Story, Craft, goodies, and more!

If you’re like I am, right about now you start to wonder where the year went. For my family, it feels like it was yesterday when our oldest daughter graduated college and also became engaged. Christmas came and went with not nearly enough time to spend with friends and family and the New Year began. Spring passed us by without a glance and before we knew it the summer was over and we were shipping our youngest daughter off to college. With the beginning of the Fall season retailers have decided that Black Friday can now start on Thursday and that its never to early to start your shopping. While my family has been kept busy, our church family has been just as busy. Members have been busy volunteering their time with Sunday school, Confirmation and Bible studies. We’ve painted pipes on the roof and classrooms, cut grass, trimmed trees and shrubs and worked on the landscaping. With your contributions, we have been able to have some much needed maintenance work completed. We have replaced doors, installed a security system and had the exterior brick power washed, tuck pointed and sealed. Individuals have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Oasis, picked up trash along city streets and delivered meals to families in need. And while this list only tells part of our story, it provides a snap-shot of who we are and what it takes to care for His house and to the different ways we can help spread His word. Working together we have accomplished many things this year, but our work is not over. Our ministries are in need of your help, your thoughts and your ideas. At the congregational meeting on Dec. 15th we will be electing new members to the Leadership Team, take the time between now and then to explore the different opportunities available and help us fulfill His plan for us. I truly believe that by all of us working together, no matter how young or how not so young, that we will not only continue to move forward but with the knowledge and wisdom of many we can grow. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who volunteers their time to this congregation, the office and preschool staff, as well as those who serve through Boards or Committees. It is through your commitment and dedication to this congregation that I find it a pleasure to serve you and to serve Him.

Rich Sommer President

At the Congregational Meeting on Dec. 15th, the following positions on the Leadership Team will be open: Treasurer, Inreach, Fellowship, Service, Resources By volunteering to help serve this congregation as a voting member of the Leadership Team, you will assist in the decision process as we seek to determine the path in which to move the congregation forward. If you are a newer member ( min. of 1 yr.) your input could provide insight that would aid us in attracting additional members. As a long standing member your wisdom and knowledge would provide additional guidance to the other members of the Leadership Team. Please contact any member of the Leadership Team, Elders or the church office for information. Together we can grow His ministry.

FEOC Report to the Congregation - The Facilities Expansion and Operations Committee has been meeting throughout 2013. We will be presenting our findings at the Congregation's Voters Meeting on December 15. The FEOC has been meeting with Lepique and Orne Architects who have prepared Working Drawings that we would like to informally share with you between services in the gym on December 8 and 15. Members of the FEOC will be on hand to answer questions. Please come and be informed. Don Popp and Kirk Zamzow....Co-Chairs Blood Drive at Our Savior on Sunday, January 26m, 2014 form 9 a.m. – 1:00 p..m. Please give blood and help save a life.

THANKSGIVING FEAST 2013 On November 25, we were blessed with over 200 people all giving thanks to God and creating some fun family memories!

It was such a blessing to be part of this wonderful God thing all coming together! This event started with a quick conversation Connie Kipp and I had that I then shared with Kathy Brasher that then the Our Savior Church congregation made come to life! Everyone did their part to make it a wonderful sharing time for all. The children and teachers did a great job with the table decorations and cute Indian and Pilgrim headbands. Thank you Pastor Mike and office staff for coordinating the set-up, take down crew and the yummy pilgrim hats that looked perfect with the table decorations. Thank you congregation cooks for the yummy desserts! We had so many needed helping hands for the feast! Many women from the Monday morning bible study came to help as well as so many kind hearts ready to serve from the congregation. It was great to see all these helping hands doing whatever was needed at the same time and making time to have conversations with our preschool families.

I have had so many preschool families comment to me or on our Facebook page how they appreciated the Thanksgiving Feast and special time spent with their children. God provided us the work to do this special day and I feel we all brought honor and praise to Him and His children! Please go look at our Facebook page to see the many great pic

NATIVITY FIRE A rural church began the lovely Christmas tradition of staging a Living Nativity scene on the front lawn. It became the talk of that small community. A visitor driving through town stopped and admired the performance, but one feature troubled him. The three wise men were carrying heavy canvas hoses, and they wore fire helmets. Unable to come up with an explanation on his own, the tourist went to one of the church members who stood by. "Why the fire hoses and helmets on the three wise men?" he asked. The church lady shook her head in disgust and replied, "You Yankees never do read the Bible!" He assured her he did, but couldn't recall anything about firemen in the Bible. The lady indignantly pulled her Bible out from under her arm and riffled through the pages, finally jabbing her finger at one particular passage. Putting the Good Book right up in his face she said, "See, Yankee, it says right here, ‘The three wise men came from afar...' "

JESUS IS BETTER THAN SANTA Santa lives at the North Pole; Jesus is everywhere. Santa rides in a sleigh; Jesus rides on the wind and walks on the water. Santa comes but once a year; Jesus is an ever present help. Santa comes down your chimney uninvited; Jesus stands at your door and knocks. Santa makes you stand in line to see him; Jesus is as close as the mention of His name. Santa lets you sit on his lap; Jesus lets you rest in His arms. Santa asks, "Little boy, little girl, what is your name?” Jesus knew our names before we did. Santa has a belly like a bowl full of jelly; Jesus has a heart full of love. Santa offers ''Ho, ho, ho"; Jesus offers health, help, and hope. Santa says "You better not cry"; Jesus says, "Cast all your cares on me for I care for you." Santa's little helpers make toys; Jesus makes new lives, mends hearts, and repairs broken homes. Santa may make you chuckle; Jesus gives you joy. Santa puts gifts under your tree; Jesus became our gift and died on the tree. There's really no comparison. Jesus is the reason for the season.

LITTLE RED WAGON It was the day after Christmas at a downtown church in San Francisco. The pastor was out in front looking over the manger scene set up on the front lawn when he noticed the Christ Child figure was missing. Right on cue, he turned to see a little boy with a red wagon coming down the street and in the wagon was the figure of the infant Jesus. So the pastor walked up to the boy and asked, "Well, young man, where did you pick up your passenger?" ''I got Him here, from the church." “Why did you take Him?" The little boy replied, “Well, about a week before Christmas I prayed to the little Lord Jesus, and I told Him if He would bring me a red wagon for Christmas, I would give him a ride around the block in it."
