In the last two lines the poet sums up his love for nature saying ; I wish my days to be linked together in harmony with the beauty of nature and love and respect for God . So long as he remembers nature , he feels happy . (B) Commentary : The rhyme scheme is as follows : a,b,c,a,b,c,d,d. He uses poetic diction as in behold which means , see . (B) "If" If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you , If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you , But make allowance for their doubting too , If you can wait and not be tired of waiting , Or being lied about , don't deal in lies . Or being hated , don't give way to hating , And yet don't look too good , nor talk too wise : If you can dream – and not make dreams your master ; If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim ; If you can meet with triumph and disaster , And treat those to impostors just the same ; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools , Or watch the things you gave your life to broken , And stoop and build them up with worn out tools : If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch and toss , And lose , and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss ; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone , And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them ' Hold on' If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue , Or walk with kings- not lose the common touch , If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you , If all men count with you , but none too much ; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds worth of distance run , Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it , And which is more you'll be a Man my son.. -42-

distance run (D) Paraphrase : "If" is a poem of four stanzas . The father provides his son with his advice . He teaches him how to face life which is full of good evil , fortune and misfortune . In the fist stanza he asks him to be brave and have confidence in himself . He calls him to have the patience to listen to others' criticism even if it is untrue ., He advises him to follow an honest , loving moderate way of life . In the second stanza , life imposes different circumstances of success and failure , which contradict one's demands and hopes . His advice , is always try again . In the third stanza , when the son risks then fails to reach his goal , he must not lose his nerve but be brave enough to summon up courage and " hold on" by his strong will and determination . In the 4th. Stanza , the son is advised to be flexible , equally modest with common people as well as with people of rank . He should forgive his enemies before his friends , but at the same time not get too involved with them . He must try to compensate for every minute of hard feelings towards them . Then and only then will his son possess the whole world and be a " man" -43-

(E) Commentary : - The poem is composed of four stanzas . - There is much comparison : - " Keep your head" " losing theirs ". - "lied about " " don't deal in lies ". - " truth" " impostors " - " triumph " " disaster ". -" winnings " " loss " - " foes " Loving friends ". These comparison serve in clarifying the picture of perfection which the poet is trying to describe . The poet , says clearly and simply that if his son can do these things which he has listed , his life will be enriched with meaning and in addition , the son will be a man . In this context , the word ' man' connotes a person who has good morals , strength of character and a generous , loving , understanding , forgiving nature . The poet repeats If several times in each stanza , then the answer to all those ifs comes in the last lines . This makes the picture complete .
