New Icons of Fashion Illustration Tony Glenville

Fashion illustration is and always has been about far more than pretty drawings of pretty dresses. This lavish celebration of today’s leading artists in the field showcases the timeless craft and amazing diversity that characterize the genre. From David Downton to Cecilia Carlstedt and from Jason Brooks to Jordi Labanda, 28 masters of fashion illustration from across the world are featured, one by one, in a grand tour of the best work currently produced. While some illustrators create daringly bold graphics, others prefer delicate watercolours and ink drawings. Throughout the volume, both hi-tech multimedia effects and traditional drawing skills are given pride of place, with many of the artists using a mixture of techniques. Lively commentary accompanies the images, while interviews with each illustrator provide further insight into their influences and methods. Tony Glenville is Creative Director: School of Media & Communication at London College of Fashion. His work has appeared in The Independent, Harper’s Bazaar, Luxure and The Evening Standard, among others. Tony has an extensive collection of fashion illustration reference materials collected over many years. • The first book to profile the key contributors to the current revival of the genre • Features an eclectic mix of international styles including David Downton, Kareem Iliya, Julie Verhoeven, Jean-Philippe Delhomme, Jason Brooks, Tanya Ling and Autumn Whitehurst • A must for anyone who bought Masters of Fashion Illustration or 100 Years of Fashion Illustration

The Purple Book Sensuality & Symbolism in Contemporary Art & Illustration Angus Hyland and Angharad Lewis

The Purple Book is a luxurious compendium of contemporary illustration that explores fantasy, sensuality and the erotic imagination. It highlights visual art and the written word as media for representing human desire’s relationship with the dream-state, make-believe and symbolism. The title of the book is inspired by The Yellow Book, the periodical published in the 1890s and initially art directed by Aubrey Beardsley. While the colour yellow represented the daringly salacious in the 1890s, today the colour purple is synonymous with opulence and sensuality. Angus Hyland is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and a partner at Pentagram Design London. His work for Laurence King includes (with Roanne Bell) Hand to Eye (2003), The Picture Book (2010) and with Steven Bateman, Symbol (2011). Angharad Lewis is an independent writer and editor and former editor of Grafik magazine. She has contributed articles to Eye, Icon, Crafts and Etapes magazines and contributed to, authored and edited books including Public Address System (2006), Street Talk (2006) and for Laurence King Materials Process Print (2007). In 2012 she launched online magazine and design retailer Up Side Up. • Presents the best contemporary illustrators’ intimate, unpublished work, much of it seen for the first time • Includes specially commissioned works illustrating five classic literary texts • Lavish package with quarter binding and extended page size

It’s a Stick-Up 20 Real Wheat Paste-Ups from the World’s Greatest Street Artists Ollystudio

This is the first book to look at an increasingly popular form of street art: the ‘wheatie’ or wheat paste-up. Many street artists don’t graffiti or stencil any more but use pre-prepared paper images that can be taken down, thereby avoiding a vandalism charge. The book shows the work of 20 artists, with photographs of their art in situ, a brief profile and a fold-out paste-up. The fold-out pages are perforated so they can easily be removed. Some of the paste-ups will be laser cut with attaching tags so they can be popped out. There’s also an introductory interview with cult street artists Sten & Lex. Ollystudio is a London-based creative studio working in print, film and art direction. Books designed by Ollystudio include Guerilla Art, Art by Tattooists: Beyond Flash for Laurence King and monographs of artists Paul Insect, JR, David Choe and Vhils for the Lazarides Gallery. Ollystudio authored and designed The Street Art Stencil Book (2010) and Stencil Republic (2012). • Contains 20 artworks by some of the world’s most talented street artists: just tear them out and paste them up anywhere • Highly original concept: the first book to examine this form of street art • Features profiles of each artist and images of the paste-up in situ • Innovative follow-up to The Street Art Stencil Book

Frank is Professor of Graphic Design at Darmstadt University. • Reveals what fifty well-known designers learned from their student years and what their professional lives are like today

No More Rules was the first wide-ranging critical survey to focus on and explore postmodernism’s impact on graphic design in the 1980s and 1990s, an era that transformed the discipline. Now re-issued in a new mini format, it tells the story of how designers and typographers threw away the rule book and forged experimental new approaches. Rick Poynor is a writer, lecturer and curator, and visiting professor in Critical Writing in Art & Design at the Royal College of Art, London. He was founding editor of Eye magazine and co-founder of Design Observer, where he blogs regularly. His other books published by Laurence King include Typographica and Designing Pornotopia. • An immensely readable analysis of how postmodern thought and practice has molded graphic design • Breaks down this broad field of graphic design activity into key developments and themes, each richly illustrated • Written by a well-respected design critic • New, attractive format

American Modernism Mini Edition Graphic Design, 1920–1960

Retro Fonts Gregor Stawinski

R. Roger Remington

American Modernism is a comprehensive survey of Modernist graphic design as it emerged in America in the period between 1920 and 1960 in various media – advertising, information design, brand identity, magazine design, book design and posters. R. Roger Remington studies the entire chronological development of the Modernist graphic style in America, covering its emergence from European avant-garde roots, its growth during the 1930s and 40s, and its subsequent continued progression into a fully-formed American style. Looking at the key works of mid-century Modernism, Remington brings together such great names as Alexey Brodovitch, Lester Beall, Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Will Burtin and Alvin Lustig. The book also looks at the impact of and reactions to this new movement as graphic design in America matured throughout the 1960s and beyond, completing an authoritative study of this key movement.

Retro Fonts is a fantastic compilation of over 400 of the best retro fonts from 1830 to the end of the 20th century. The fonts are presented in the style of old type specimen books as alphabets with sample words/phrases, shown opposite classic examples of the fonts in use in their historical context. Arranged chronologically into eight sections representing different stylistic eras, each with an introduction discussing the typography of that era, the fonts range from Art Deco, Bauhaus and Swiss through to Sixties, Disco and Punk. Featuring both familiar fonts and lesser-known examples ripe for rediscovery, this is a unique source of inspiration for all graphic designers and typographers. The accompanying CD contains 222 copyright-free fonts. Gregor Stawinski is a graphic designer based in Munich. • With a CD containing 222 copyright-free fonts • Book includes over 400 fonts arranged by stylistic era • Unique sourcebook that will appeal to all graphic designers

R. Roger Remington is Vignelli Distinguished Professor of Design at Rochester Institute of Technology and director of the Vignelli Center for Design Studies. His previous books include Nine Pioneers in American Graphic Design (1992), Lester Beall: Trailblazer of American Graphic Design (1996) and Design and Science: The Life and Work of Will Burtin (2007). • The first comprehensive survey of Modernist graphic design as it emerged in America between 1920 and 1960 • Includes advertising, information design, identity, magazine design, print, dimensional design and posters

Walk the Line The Art of Drawing Marc Valli and Ana Ibarra

Drawing has always been a fundamental skill and good drawing skills allowed artists to grasp the reality around them. At the turn of the millennium, however, the general impression was that with the wide availability of computers, scanners, digital cameras and image software, drawing would dwindle into a marginal activity. In fact, the opposite happened: the enthusiasm for digital imagery died down and the ability to draw has become a treasured skill. Walk the Line: The Art of Drawing includes interviews with the artists about their relationships with technology and the conditions under which their works are shown and sold. Marc Valli is the co-founder of retail and book-selling company Magma in the UK, and of visual art magazines Graphic and Elephant. He is the author of RGB (Reviewing Graphics in Britain) and co-author of Microworlds (Laurence King). Ana Ibarra graduated in Philosophy in Spain, where she was born. She came to London to study Product Design. She is currently one of the editors of Elephant magazine. • Captures a new movement of drawing as an end in itself • Carefully curated collection of 65 emerging talents from around the world • Packed with more than 300 visually arresting drawings

Animation

The Renaissance in Europe

Andrew Selby

Re-issue

Margaret L. King

From scriptwriting through to production, this introduction to animation for students surveys key technical processes and examines a variety of stylistic approaches. The book includes visual examples from key animators and illustrated features on how to create exciting animation for a variety of audiences. This book is a vital resource for anyone who intends to make animation a part of their career.

In this deft recasting of the Renaissance story, Margaret L. King weaves together the many strands that made up this complex cultural movement. By marrying the best of earlier scholarship with more recent research, King shows how Renaissance history is today as much about the study of power, wealth, gender, class, honour, shame, ritual and other categories of investigation as the literary and artistic achievements of a uniquely urban society that spread from Italy to the rest of Europe. Ultimately, she points to the multiple ways in which this seminal epoch influenced the later developments of Western culture and society.

Andrew Selby is Head of Department for the School of the Arts at Loughborough University. An internationally recognized illustrator, his work has appeared in newspapers and on billboards for the past 20 years. He writes extensively in the field of visual communication and is the author of Animation in Process.

Margaret L. King is Professor Emerita of History at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York. She is the author of several books on women, humanism and Venice in the Renaissance, and is currently editor-in-chief of the Renaissance and Reformation online bibliography published by Oxford Bibliographies.

Design Incubator A Prototype for New Design Practice

Detail in Contemporary Bar and Restaurant Design

Patrick Chia

Drew Plunkett and Olga Reid

Artist, craftsman, engineer, ethnographer, psychologist, entrepreneur, agent of change – is a designer one of these or a blend of all? What is a designer’s role in our current global and social landscape? The Design Incubation Centre was established to explore and probe these questions in depth within a rigorous and research-oriented context in the Division of Industrial Design at the National University of Singapore. Arranged by themes and consisting of documentary photographs, illustrated sketches, renderings and diagrams as well as articles and texts, this book presents an extensive archive of projects and workshops in product and research development. Interspersed with insights and reflections from team members past-and-present, this book serves as a handbook for designers who seek to incorporate unique, progressive methods and approaches into their personal or professional practices as well as a retrospective monograph on the Design Incubation Centre.

Bars and restaurants need to be assertive. Customers tend not to visit them to satisfy basic appetites for food or drink but for the social opportunities. Their interiors need to occupy the imagination of their customers and to whet the appetite for a return visit. The design that gets the formula right will do as much to prolong the life of the business as the products on offer. This book includes a wide range of international projects and for each one there is a descriptive text, colour photographs, floor plans, sections and construction and decorative details. A bonus CD-ROM contains all the drawings as printed in the book, in both EPS and DWG (generic CAD) formats.

Patrick Chia is the founding director of the Design Incubation Centre (DIC). Established in 2006, DIC is Singapore’s first dedicated industrial design research laboratory. DIC’s unique team composition and broad-ranging capabilities have enabled it to work on diverse research projects and collaborative workshops with organisations in academia, government, NGOs, and the design industry.

Drew Plunkett was Head of the Department of Interior Design at the Glasgow School of Art. He is the author of Drawing for Interior Design (2009), Construction and Detailing for Interior Design (2010) and co-author, with Olga Reid, of Detail in Contemporary Retail Design (2012). Olga Reid teaches interior architecture at London Metropolitan University. • Unprecedented and in-depth examination of contemporary bar and restaurant design • Packed with detail drawings and photographs • Invaluable for interior designers and architects as well as students
