Instrument Cluster General information
The following components are integrated with the instrument cluster:
Instrument Cluster Control Module J285
Anti-theft Immobilizer Control Module J362
Speedometer
Tachometer
Fuel gauge
Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) gauge
Multifunction indicator
Warning and indicator lamps, 90-1, Instrument cluster warning and indicator lamps, overview
The instrument cluster also supplements various warning lamp displays with control module-controlled acoustic warnings. All warning and indicator lamps are Lamp Emitting Diodes (LEDs) which cannot be serviced separately. LED malfunctions require replacement of instrument cluster. 90-1, Instrument cluster, replacing . Instrument clusters contain no field serviceable components. Malfunctions require replacement of instrument cluster. The Data Bus On Board Diagnostic Interface J533 (Gateway) is no longer part of the instrument cluster electronics. Gateway functions are controlled by a separate control module. 97-5, Data Bus On Board Diagnostic Interface J533 . On Board Diagnostic, functions

Instrument Cluster
The instrument cluster is controlled by an internal microprocessor with On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capability. If malfunctions occur in monitored sensors and components, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) will be stored in memory. Troubleshoot instrument cluster malfunctions by performing OBD program using Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051/5052 in operating mode "Guided Fault Finding" Instrument cluster, checking with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)
Instrument cluster operation can be checked with Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM). - Connect Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051/5052 97-1, VAS 5051 / 5052 - Select operating mode "Guided Fault Finding" - Enter information as prompted and press ">" to confirm. After the DTC memory of all control modules has been checked: - Use "Go to" button to select "Function / Component Selection" - Select "Body (Repair Group 01; 27; 50-97)" - Select "Electrical system int/ext (Repair Group 01; 27; 90-97)" - Select "01 - Self-diagnosis" - Select "Instrument cluster" - Select "Functions" - Select "Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) instrument cluster" - Press ">" to confirm. - Follow tester prompts Instrument cluster, replacing
The procedure "Replacing instrument cluster" includes the following:
Should a new instrument cluster be installed in the vehicle, it must be coded in accordance with the

market version and vehicle equipment.
In order to adapt integrated anti-theft immobilizer functions to the Engine Control Module (ECM), data from ECM must be stored in the replacement instrument cluster.
Also, an adaptation of all vehicle keys must be performed after installing a new instrument cluster.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Note:
Before removing instrument cluster, perform work procedure "Replacing instrument cluster" in order to read data stored in control module 90-1, Instrument cluster, replacing .
Removing: Note:
It may or may not be necessary to remove the steering wheel or upper steering column trim in order to remove the instrument cluster. For clarity, steering wheel and trim are shown removed in the following illustration.
Caution!
Switch off all electrical consumers.
Switch ignition off and remove ignition key.
- Disconnect gap cover from instrument cluster and place on steering column
