Volkswagen B3 Passat Radio-Wipers-Lights-Switches-Wiring Anti-theft alarm system, general information: From 1991 m.y. (Page 90-300-1)

The anti-theft alarm system has two types of alarms, visual and audible. If the alarm system is activated (vehicle broken into) the emergency flashers will flash, the alarm horn will sound and the starter will be deactivated. The alarm system monitors and protects the following: engine compartment (hood) luggage compartment (trunk lid) doors ignition (starter lock-out) The alarm system has a self-diagnostic feature which checks the operation of its components and wiring. When the alarm system is armed and all components are functional, the alarm horn will sound briefly after either front door is locked with the key. The alarm system can only be armed when the hood, trunk lid and all doors are closed.
