“Name the Puppy” 2014 from RCMP Alberta Media Relations

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) needs help in naming a handful of their newest (and cutest) recruits! The Police Dog Service Training Centre (PDSTC) in Innisfail, Alberta is asking young Canadians to suggest names for 10 German Shepherd puppies recently born at the Centre. Children are encouraged to be original and imaginative in finding names that will serve these puppies well in their careers with Canada’s national police force. When thinking of names, it is important to keep in mind that these are working police dogs, not pets. The 10 whose names are selected will each receive a laminated 8×10-inch photo of the pup they name, a plush dog named Justice and an RCMP cap. Contest rules are simple: § Contestants can suggest only one name (one entry per person). § The name may be for a male or a female pup. § The name must start with the letter “G”. § The name must have no more than nine (9) letters. § The name must be one or two syllables. § Contestants must live in Canada and be 16 years old or younger. Three ways to enter: 1. Enter online: www.rcmp-grc.ca/depot/pdstc-cdcp/namethe-puppy-nomme-le-chiot-eng.htm 2. Email the child’s name, age, address, telephone number and the suggested name for a puppy to pdstc-cdcp@rcmp-grc. gc.ca. 3. Send a postcard or letter to the following address. Be sure to print the child’s name, age, address, telephone number and the suggested name for a puppy. Attn: “Name the Puppy Contest” Police Dog Service Training Centre Box 6120, Innisfail, AB T4G 1S8 We love to receive drawings and paintings! If submitting by mail or email, children are invited to get creative with their entries. Although there can be only 10 winners, names not selected for the contest will be considered for other puppies born during the year. The deadline for entries is March 5, 2014. Contest winners and prizes will be announced on April 15, 2014. Winning names will be chosen by the PDSTC staff. A draw will determine the winning entry in the event of multiple submissions of the same puppy name. The PDSTC is home to the RCMP national police dog training program and is a part of RCMP “Depot” Division.

Blaine Calkins

MP Report ECONOMIC ACTION PLAN 2014 DEMONSTRATES COMMITMENT TO JOBS AND OPPORTUNITIES Member of Parliament Wetaskiwin welcomed the federal budget, Economic Action Plan 2014, the focus on job creation, economic growth, and keeping taxes low – along with its plan to get back to balance by 2015 – these are positive measures for the riding of Wetaskiwin. “Canada has the strongest job creation record among all G-7 countries, more than 1 million net new jobs have been created since the global recession, There are still Canadians looking for work,” said MP Calkins. “That’s why Economic Action Plan 2014 will continue to focus on creating more jobs and growing the economy in the riding of Wetaskiwin and across the country.” The NDP and Liberals had been calling for the budget to include new tax hikes on Canadians and more deficit spending, our Government rejected both demands. Economic Action Plan 2014 contained no new taxes for families and businesses, and continues to reign in government spending so it is efficient and effective as possible. “We’ve seen it in places like Greece and Detroit, not having your fiscal house in order can lead to incredible economic instability, dramatic cuts to government programs and higher taxes,” said MP Calkins. Economic Action Plan 2014 includes key measures to support Alberta families and strengthen our economy, while keeping taxes low and returning to balanced budgets in 2015, including: • Launching the Canada Job Grant: so that Canadians can get the skills training they need to get in-demand jobs. • Creating the Canada Apprentice Loan: which will provide apprentices in Red Seal trades access to over $100 million in interest-free loans each year. • Strengthening Canada’s Labour Market: Launching an enhanced job matching Service and modernizing the Job Bank to ensure Canadians are given the first chance at available jobs. • Improving Access to Broadband in Rural and Northern Communities: Providing $305 million to extend and enhance access to high – speed broadband networks for up to an additional 280,000 Canadian households. • Combating Contraband Tobacco: investing over $91 million to enhance the RCMP’s ability to crack-down on the dangerous and illegal trade of contraband. • Cutting Red Tape for Small Business: cutting

800,000 payroll remittances for 50,000 small businesses. • Total Major Transfers for Alberta: $3.7 billion through the Canada Health Transfer. That is an increase of $2.1 billion or over 129% since 2005-06 under the former Liberal government. • Canada Social Transfer: $1.5 billion, an increase of $878 million or almost 148% since 2005-06 under the former Liberal government. • And much more. Unlike the previous Liberal government, our Government is not going to balance the budget on the backs of the provinces; our Conservative government has provided provinces with record levels of major transfers. For Alberta, the federal budget confirmed that transfers will total $5.2 billion in 2014-15 – that is a 134% increase from under the previous Liberal government. “While the Liberals dramatically slashed major transfers to Alberta, decimating the health care, education and other important social services that our families depend on, under our Conservative Government federal support has grown to historic levels, and will continue to grow into the future,” says MP Calkins.

Solutions & Substitutions by Reena Nerbas www.reena.ca

Hi Reena, I have very expensive custom made cellular shades on all of my windows and the draw cords on all of them are getting very dirty. I’ve tried bleach with water on a cloth and run the cloth up and down the cord but it is not doing anything. What would you suggest I use to clean them? Thank-you for your time, Linda Dear Linda, Your best bet is to scrub all cords with Sunlight laundry bar soap and water. If you cannot locate Sunlight, use Ivory bar soap. Scrub and rinse with water. Dear Reena, I have a very oily t-zone on my face. I buy pore strips to clean my face (especially my nose) and they really seem to help, but they are too expensive and I can’t afford them. Is there any way to make pore strips at home? Thanks, Vessa Dear Vessa, You want cheap? I’ve got cheap! Go to your local grocery store and purchase a box of unflavored gelatin and milk (any kind of milk works). In a little microwavable dish combine 1 tsp. milk with 1 tsp. gelatin powder. Microwave for 10 seconds. Cool and then use a small paintbrush to brush liquid mixture onto your face (avoid eyes). Leave for 10 minutes and peel. Works just as well as pore strips! Hello Reena, I read your “Solutions & Substitutions” every week and even though I reached a milestone (80), I still love learning new things and I enjoy your advice to everyone very much. I have a problem which I’m hoping you will be able to solve for me. A few weeks ago I bought a ‘plastic/rubber’ mat for my tub. Once I brought it home and put it in my bathroom, I realized it had a terrible rather toxic odor. I have no idea how to get rid of this smell. Can you please help me? Thanks a bunch, Anne Happy Birthday Anne and many happy returns! The bathmat is “off gassing” and will eventually stop smelling. In the meantime, soak the mat in 10 drops of tea tree oil and enough water to cover the mat. Leave for 2 hours and rinse well. Tea tree oil can be found at most grocery stores in the pharmacy department as well as health food stores. Feedback from Readers who Care Re: Putting graphite inside of a plug Dear Reena, While putting graphite inside of a plug may make it easier to help the plug slide in and out, this is a hazard because a loose substance flopping around inside of a plug can cause a short in

the plug and catch fire. Thanks, Brian Re: Making your own T.V. dinners at home Hello Reena, I’d like to share an experience about something that has drastically lowered the cost of a daily hot meal at our work place. Recently our office lunch room received a new appliance called Hot Logic that, without any programming what so ever, automatically heats multiple personal sized refrigerated or frozen sealed meals brought to work from home. These meals can be either leftovers from a home cooked meal or personal frozen meals from a store. Thought you would like to know how this new product has really lowered our costs, yet increased our meal choices and really simplifying meal heating at our work place. We found our unit on-line and it works great! Sincerely, Mary Great Tips of the Week • I like to wash Lego blocks once in a while and when I do, I put them inside of a mesh laundry bag. Tie a knot to keep it closed and toss the bag into the washing machine. I wash with cold water and laundry detergent and lay them on a towel to dry. Submitted By: Phoebe • I have one of those big Kitchen Aid blenders and never knew where to keep the attachments so that they wouldn’t look messy. I then purchased a few 3M plastic hooks and hung them in my pantry, now I hang the attachments and they look organized! Submitted By: Paul

JUST JOKING! A young woman was taking an afternoon nap. After she woke up, she told her husband, “I just dreamed that you gave me a pearl necklace for Valentine’s day. What do you think it means?” “You’ll know tonight.” he said. That evening, the man came home with a small package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, she opened it-only to find a book entitled: “The meaning of dreams”. The most effective way to remember to buy something to your wife for St. Valentine’s Day is... to forget it once! I just love to do special things for my wife on Valentine’s day. Like open the door for her when she puts all the laundry in the washing machine, or plug and unplug the vacuum as she moves from room to room cleaning. Guys, it’s these little thoughtful things you can do to have a marriage such as mine. “Honey, on this Valentine’s Day, I want to tell you something... I’m not rich like Jack, I don’t have a mansion like Russell, or I don’t have a Porsche like Martin, but I do love you and want to marry you.” “Oh, dear... I love you too... but, what was that you said about Martin?” A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middleaged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing “Love” stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and starts spraying scent all over them. His curiosity getting the better of him, he goes up to the balding man and asks him what he is doing. The man says: “I’m sending out one thousand Valentine cards signed: ‘Guess who?’” “But why?” asks the man. “I’m a divorce lawyer.” the man replies. Sales Ad at a Store: “YOU ARE MY ONE AND ONLY”... ...valentine cards, now on sale: 4 for $5. Q: If your aunt ran off to get married, what would you call her? A: Antelope. Q: What kind of flowers do you never give on Valentine’s Day? A: Cauliflowers!
