Welcome to Westlake Middle School! My name is Michelle Henning. This year I am teaching 6th grade math & science. I LOVE these subjects and I hope that after a year with me, you will too. In our math class, we will be taking rigorous notes and working on in-depth projects. Our discussions, lessons and activities will engage and involve every one of you in class everyday. We will base our math learning on Common Core State Standards and the science learning on the NGSS Standards. Throughout the year I hope to instill the same love of learning that I have in each of you this year. Policies It’s extremely important that you are here every day. If you miss a day, you must make up the work and notes on your own time. You may use the my ISN (interactive student notebook) or borrow another students’ ISN. You must respect everyone and everything in the classroom. This includes other students, teachers and materials. Discipline One of my expectations is that all students learn in a safe and engaging environment. If there is something that prevents this from happening then appropriate action will be given depending on the severity of the disruption. Some examples include: Verbal Warning, Removal from the class, Teacher Conference, Detention and Meeting with Administration. Tools and Materials You will be given an ISN (interactive student notebook) that is to be brought to class each day. Your notes and homework will be in your ISN. It is your most important tool for learning. You will use your ISN to study for your tests and quizzes. ISNs are graded on a bi-weekly basis. Other tools and materials that will be used in the ISN will be provided, such as pencils, pens, rulers, protractors, etc. However, if you prefer, you may bring in your own supplies.
Planners It is your responsibility to record homework and other assignments in your planner each and every day. There is homework assigned nightly. If there is no homework assigned, please write “no homework.” Parents are encouraged to check student planners to ensure work is being completed. Textbook We will be using ebooks in class and at home (for homework). If you do not have access to the internet at home, you will check out a textbook to keep at home. Science will use interactive Science and Math will use Common Core Course 1.
