NORTH DISTRICT CENTER “CROSSING THE LINE” Art Exhibition North District Center students and staff attended Mr. José Jesús Elías “CROSSING THE LINE” Master of Art Graduate Exhibition on February 16, 2012. The exhibition was open to the general public, in the Conley Arts Gallery, at Fresno State University (February 16 thru February 24). Mr. José Jesús Elías started his educational journey at West Hills College Coalinga. Elías later transferred to Fresno State to continue studying his passion for art. According to Olivia Vega, “His paintings express the struggles, the sadness for leaving loved ones behind, and the sacrifices farm-working families make to give their children a better future. He is a role model to our students.” Students enjoy having a local artist as their instructor at NDC. Anabel Valdovinos-Pérez who is enrolled as a full-time student at North District Center strongly identifies with Mr. Elías’ art work. She stated, “I see my parents and myself in Mr. Elías’ art work. It brings back memories of pain and passion from my past. At the same time, Mr. Elías inspires me to continue my education.”

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Marcia Nolte For most people, the news that Marcia just got today would have sent them into a panic attack - she was told by her doctor that it was “surgery or going blind,” - but for Marcia it is one more health issue she will need to deal with this semester. Bertha Felix-Mata noted that she met Marcia in spring, 2010, when she applied to our TRIO SS program. She is a petite, 56 year old, mother of three who raised her children on her own. Marcia moved her family from Chicago, Illinois, 6 years ago to join relatives in California. She thought it was a good move and that it would help her manage her chronic rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes better. Upon arriving in Coalinga, Marcia worked at a local retail store. She only had a high school diploma and had worked seasonal odd jobs while taking care of her children. After a while, Marcia was forced to leave the job for medical reasons. It was at this point when, encouraged by friends, she decided to continue her education. She enrolled at West Hills College to pursue a major in psychology/behavioral sciences. She figured that this would be a good fit for her, as she had learned a lot dealing with a learning disabled son. As she entered college, her two sons decided to follow in her footsteps. Marcia commented that it is kind of funny - the friendly competition from her sons as they try to show her up on things such as completing online orientations faster than she can. In spring, 2011, a bout with valley fever was too debilitating; she ended up with a lighter schedule. However, in spite of her health challenges, Marcia has managed to finish with a 3.0 or higher GPA each semester.

The biggest challenges that Marcia has faced returning to school later in life is the technology used in education and the cost of textbooks. Marcia added that this semester alone her books were over $500. Before enrolling in college, she had never used computers or the internet. However, she credits TRIO with the support provided to her and some phenomenal instructors. Marcia recognizes Coach Steven Wright as a caring and willing teacher who helps students succeed in the Health Ed 35 class by using PowerPoint. Another instructor she regards highly is English instructor, Scott Sutherland. She stated that his rigorous English assignments prepared her well to excel in subsequent classes such as, sociology and psychology. She also praised the tutoring center for its availability in the evenings. She encourages her sons to seek tutoring. Marcia wishes that more students would seek help sooner in the semester. She candidly added – “I don’t feel stupid asking questions.” She asserted that sometimes younger students may not seek tutoring because they don’t want to appear to need the extra help. In spite of her health issues and personal challenges, Marcia is determined to complete her Associates Degree and follow with a Bachelor’s and Master’s programs. She is toying with the idea of pursuing a doctorate degree. I have no doubts that Marcia can accomplish all of her academic dreams. She completed the last two semesters with a 4.0!

CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION Curriculum Committee
th
The WHCC Curriculum Committee kicked off the spring semester with their first meeting on February 16 . The committee is anticipating a busy semester with five-year reviews in a variety of areas. The Area Representatives and Technical Review are excellent resources for faculty who are updating curriculum. Both of these resources are critical parts of the curriculum process and provide valuable assistance with content review, cohesiveness within the proposal, as well as grammar and formatting tips. As we know, curriculum is the very heart of the college experience for faculty and students alike. Current, relative and well-thought out course outlines are the foundation for ensuring that West Hills College Coalinga continues to provide each and every student a meaningful educational experience. The committee will also continue its focus on developing SB 1440 degrees. We anticipate increasing our degree inventory by three to five by the end of the semester. The CID website provides up-to-date information for faculty engaged in this process. There are currently 16 transfer model curriculum (TMC) degrees approved and the discipline input group (DIG) meetings continue to put forward newly approved and vetted TMCs.

myCourses Questions Answered On January 31, 2012, IT support was available in the WHCC Cafeteria. The session was designed to answer questions about the new myCourses system that has replaced Blackboard for online and web-enhanced courses. Those participating were provided information about the myCourses Student Orientation and a print copy of the myCourses Quick Start Guide. Students also posted their questions the old fashioned way on sticky notes while Thomas Robb, Educational Technology Specialist for WHCC, and Idelle Mahrt, Helpdesk Coordinator, answered questions and took videos of attendees asking questions. Students and faculty grabbed snacks and entered their names for a chance to win a free Starbucks card. QUESTION AND ANSWER VIDEO A video of the questions and responses has been posted to the myCourses system for all users to view. The idea was to provide an interactive way to answer those frequently asked questions that students and faculty often have when using a system for the first time! See the video at http://youtu.be/FVetSx2b2DE. RAFFLE WINNERS Students that stopped by are encouraged to check their myStudentEmail account and look for an email from the WHCCD Helpdesk with instructions for picking up their free Starbucks cards! MYCOURSES QUICKSTART GUIDE Students that are new to the myCourses system can download an interactive version of the myCourses Quickstart guide full of graphics, an interactive menu, and videos designed to teach how to use specific tools within the new system. Download a copy by going to http://tinyurl.com/7cym3eh.

The under-liner is applied first covering the dirt and then the liner itself goes over the geo-tech layer. The liner comes in very large pieces; it spans the width of the reservoir in three runs with about six inches of overlap. The stages of applying the liner are depicted in the following photos. The crew made short work of this process they started about 6:30 am and the last piece was spread about 11:40 am.

WHCC Farm of the Future @ International AG EXPO The AIS Programs had two booths at this year’s Ag Expo. Precision Ag and the Ag Science and Technology had a booth in the B Pavilion. This pavilion is predominantly irrigation vendors which puts our WHCC programs in the midst of Industry. Students working the booth had the opportunity to work with a number of the industry partners and make excellent contacts. Students also worked at the TOPCON, Fresno Oxygen, and Torch Master Plasma tables. The Welding and Heavy Equipment programs had an outside booth. The HE program displayed the CAT 140 H Motor grader along with the John Deere excavator simulator. Many prospective students enjoyed testing their skills with the simulator. The Welding Technology program displayed the welding trailer and spoke to many potential students. A good number of employers were also very interested in the program, with several of them expressing the need for welders.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Brandon Hicks Brandon Hicks was born and raised in the grand city of Coalinga, graduating a proud Horned Toad in 2001. Brandon started working for West Hills College in 2003 as a temporary employee and was hired full time in 2004 as a Skilled Maintenance Worker. Since then Brandon has become HVAC certified and probably is the most knowledgeable person of the physical campus. Because of the working elements of a skilled maintenance worker, Brandon is responsible for maintaining and operating the campus facility’s mechanical (i.e. HVAC, plumbing, etc.), electrical (i.e. main service, distribution, lighting, etc.), structural and individual building components, such as walls, roof, window, doors, ceilings, and floors. Brandon is also the unofficial locksmith for the campus which requires locks to be repaired, rekeyed and key stamping. Anyone who has worked with Brandon will let you know that he is an enjoyable person to be around who enjoys doing his job no matter what the challenges bring him In Brandon’s spare time he likes to take his family camping on Pismo Beach riding motorbikes or up in the mountains fishing. He also spends a lot of his time as an assistant coach for one of his sons’ baseball teams. Basically any fun to be had outdoors he will be there, even if it’s chasing rainbows and butterflies.

FACILITIES Water Tank Installed at WHCC With a working crew of 6 technicians and a 22 ton crane with 100' of boom the 752 gallon storage tank was lowered into the basement on the morning of February 7. After getting the storage tank into place that day, which stands vertically at about 8 feet tall, the next day was spent installing. The installation required new plumbing with copper piping, a new pump and a new bladder tank. Once everything was in place the boiler was kicked back on and it probably took all night for that tank to fill with hot water.
