The Cultural Spring has four core partners – The University of Sunderland, The Customs House, the Sunderland Music, Arts and Culture (MAC) Trust and Sangini. DRUMMING WORKSHOP Come and learn drumming with Mark Barfoot. Using West African djembes and bass drums Mark will teach traditional rhythm pieces and also boomwhackers to create instant and playful musical arrangements. The goal of the workshops is to grow team spirit and co-operation and for participants to develop or discover their musical skills, feel more confident and have a great time. FALLING ON YOUR FEET Falling on Your Feet is a bespoke dance programme for people aged 65 years and over who are living independently to work with a talented choreographer to coproduce and co-curate their own dance works. You’ll meet new, likeminded people, your confidence will improve and your fear of falling may reduce. SONGWRITING AND PERFORMANCE CHOIR Following the success of ‘Fireflight’, the opening event of The Fire Station where music participants composed their own music, the Sunderland Music Education Hub are launching a new community choir which will focus on writing new songs to be performed at cultural events around the city such as the Tall Ships 2018. BOLLYWOOD DANCE Bollywood dance is great fun. As well as learning the traditional Indian dance moves, you will have fun, feel energetic and get to perform at local events. This colourful dance

CERAMICS Join us on this fun and popular outdoor and garden themed ceramics course suitable for all ability levels. Learn how to engage with a variety of ceramic making techniques to help you create a beautiful Eden in your home’s outdoor

spaces this spring. Working alongside our experienced tutor and assistant, participants will learn how to create a choice of work, choosing a number of items to create, including ceramic planters, plant pots, bird feeders and wind chimes. Glazing skills 5

and techniques will be included, and all work created can be taken home at the end of the course. No experience or special equipment is necessary, everything is provided. SEWING AND TEXTILES

PRINT AND DYE FABRICS Join Textile Artist Sheila Biggs to experiment with printing and dyeing techniques. You will have a go at Shibori, dyeing using indigo and rust, and block printing. Wear old clothes - it might get messy.

JEWELLERY

JEWELLERY MAKING Learn basic jewellery making skills, including polymer clay jewellery, wire work, seed beading, kumihimo and macrame techniques. Learners of all stages are welcome. PHOTOGRAPHY WALK Please bring along your digital camera or phone for our photography walk with artist Jo Howell. Starting with a brief chat about composition you will then embark on a walk along the river taking in Marina Walk, Roker Beach and Roker Park, before making your way back to the National Glass Centre. The walk will take approximately 3 hours including time to take in the views and compose your images. Wrap up

SCREEN PRINTING

SCREEN PRINTING An introduction to screen printing on paper. Learn how the screen printing process works from drawing up initial designs all the way through to printing two-colour prints on archival papers. Work with non-toxic, water-based inks and learn the process of hand-pulling your own screenprints to take home and keep. Participants will also get the chance to design their own prints. It can get messy, so bring your own apron or wear old clothes. CHALK CONSTRUCTION CLUB Chalk Construction Club is a creative 8-week programme that introduces families to a wide variety of creative arts activities. From science and technology experiments to messy play, cardboard builds to music making and everything in between, each week a different theme. Sessions FAMILY ECO-CRAFTS Come along to our family Eco-crafting sessions where we will be using recycled, woodland and pre-loved materials to craft and create pieces that will dragon themed and linked to the Jarrow Festival. MIXED MEDIA ART Mixed media art workshops aim to foster integration as well as enable selfexpression among local communities and the newly arrived communities in Sunderland. Let’s capture new voices and stories through colours, textures and a variety of mediums. MEGA MAKERS WITH THE CUSTOMS HOUSE Whether you’ve got 30 minutes or a full two hours to spare let us guide you on your own creative journey. Mega Makers enjoy a different arty challenge each session. All you need to bring is yourself. We will help unlock your imagination. You’ll have the chance to make art with exciting materials inspired by fascinating themes. You’ll have a seriously good time. Suitable for young people aged 11 – 16 years old.

Join Padma Rao and Miki Z to learn Mixed media techniques and create a piece for public display as part of the International Women’s Day. Some of the sessions are for women only, but there are also mixed group sessions for all to enjoy.

PROPER POETRY “Most people ignore most poetry because most poetry ignores most people” – Adrian Mitchell Poetry can sometimes be a bit boring, can’t it? How do you write poems that don’t ignore people? Exploring different styles of writing, over the course of five sessions Rowan McCabe will share tips and skills on how to find topics that strike a chord with others, while still staying true to who you are. Whether you’ve never written a poem in your life, or you’ve been writing it since the day you could hold a crayon, all are welcome to these free sessions.

Rowan McCabe is a poet and performer from Newcastle upon Tyne. Aware that poetry isn’t a real job, he decided to create his own profession and is now the world’s first Door-to-Door Poet. The project has been featured in the Guardian, on BBC Breakfast and was named ‘Best of Today’ on Radio 4. These sessions are aimed at over 65’s, but all welcome to join us. BITESIZE ARTS PROJECTS We recently launched a call out for artists to create four bitesize pieces of theatre, new writing and participatory arts experiences to tour community venues across South Tyneside. A panel consisting of community members selected four artists and theatre groups which are Unfolding Theatre, Kamaal Hussain, Eric MacLennan and Laura Lindow. Food will be an integral part of each of these four performances, so you may be welcomed with Baklava or have hot bowl [email protected]

of lumpy tomato soup! There will be performances in community venues, scout huts and unusual settings. There will be 5 performances of each show over 5 days in different venues. Each of the selected artists will be visiting community venues throughout South Tyneside with further workshops or conversations taking place across the wards in January and February with the final shows taking place from February to April. BALTIC AND LAING ART GALLERY Saturday 3rd March Join us as we visit the BALTIC and Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle for a day of visual artwork. LAUNCH DAY Wednesday 28th March 7.30pm The Customs House, Mill Dam, South Shields NE33 1ES In collaboration with visual artist Alexander Millar, Kelly-Abbott Dance Theatre explores the industrial history of the UK shipyard communities. Bringing to life Millar’s paintings of working men and the iconic characters known as “Gadgies”, Artistic 14

Director Kristin KellyAbbott uses her trademark quirky dance theatre style to re-imagine Millar’s paintings and bring to the stage a visual, physical and entertaining production. This is also a first come first serve basis so do hurry to get your ticket YOUR ART The Your Art Scheme is designed to support community- led arts activity across Sunderland and South Tyneside. Community groups cab apply for support of between £400 and £1,000. This money can be used to develop a new community arts groups to work with an artist, support a group to work with an artist, support a group to go to an exhibition or performance, or give support towards the purchase of equipment and resources for an arts activity.
