It’s all about the Sparkle Decorations, lights, scents and color envelop you in the spirit of the season at the Disneyland® Resort November 10, 2017 through Sunday, January 7, 2018. 5 These festive facts show what makes it the sparkliest place on Earth.
A TREE SHINING WITH 2,000 ORNAMENTS AND 800 BOWS
Christmas Spirit on Parade Enjoy the music and merriment of Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade at 5 Walt Disney World® Resort.
Shining and shimmering, the Christmas tree in Town Square on Main Street, U.S.A., welcomes Guests to begin their holiday celebrations at Disneyland® Park. The 60-foot-tall tree boasts an amazing 2,000 ornaments, 800 bows, 4,800 multi-colored lights and 70,000 mini white lights.
A SPARKLING WORLD OF OVER 300,000 LIGHTS “it’s a small world” was the first Disneyland® Park attraction to be decorated for the holidays in 1997. More than 60,000 colored lights and 20,000 clear lights gleam on the exterior façade while 250,000 mini lights twinkle in the trees, topiaries and hedges. (That’s a lot of bling!)
You have your cocoa and holiday treat and you’ve found a place on Main Street, U.S.A. Faintly, you hear the first strains of music and feel the anticipation growing. Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade is on the way! Now in its 10th year of delighting Guests at Magic Kingdom® Park at Walt Disney World® Resort, the parade debuted during the holiday season of 2007.
“The parade is our opportunity to touch Guests’ hearts in a whole different way.”
Planning for a parade of this magnitude takes hundreds of hours to get everything right. “For instance, the toy soldiers often rehearse up to four weeks leading up to the parade to make sure they are all in step because their routine is so precise and demanding. But the hard work is all worth it! Our Guests love the Disney Characters and stories so much. Being able to share that legacy with them in this parade is very special. I think we all feel fortunate to be part of it,” Anderson says.
— Tara Anderson, Show Director, Walt Disney World® Resort
MILES OF FESTIVE GARLAND AND RIBBON Decorated with approximately four miles of ribbon, over two miles of garland and 200 wreaths, Main Street, U.S.A., is a feast for the senses as costumed carolers fill the air with music, and delicious scents of traditional holiday treats waft tantalizingly from nearby candy stores and bakeries.

As the parade passes by, listen to the sounds of the fabulous musical score that interweaves a medley of holiday tunes with an original song, “Once Upon a Christmastime.” Kids young and old will delight in seeing 12 colorful floats, a horse-drawn sleigh and Cinderella’s coach pulled by snowwhite ponies. And that’s not to mention the 160 performers and Disney Characters—many of whom are rarely seen in the Park at any other time of year. “Some floats even incorporate fragrances such as pine, gingerbread and peppermint to delight your senses,” says Tara Anderson, Show Director, Walt Disney World® Resort.

“I think one of the great messages in Coco is how meaningful it is to explore and preserve our family stories.”
A Family Story Coco, Disney•Pixar’s new animated film, celebrates the power of family storytelling with mirth, music and heart. Every family has its stories. Discovering and celebrating them is a key theme of Coco, Disney•Pixar’s new animated feature film debuting November 22. “I believe in the value of family storytelling as a way of helping all of us understand who we are,” says Director and Screenwriter Adrian Molina. “Coco is about that journey of understanding.” Lively, curious 12-year-old Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) loves music, and dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). But his family has a baffling generations-old ban on music and Miguel doesn’t understand why. Following a mysterious chain of events, he finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead where he meets charming trickster, Héctor (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history. A BOY WITH A PASSION “Miguel is utterly charming, charismatic and funny, but he feels stymied by his family’s lack of approval of his passion for music,” says Producer Darla K. Anderson. “But you don’t have to dream of being an artist or musician to relate to Miguel’s journey. It’s the same for anyone who’s trying to find who they are and a path to becoming what they are meant to be.”
8 LEARN MORE AT DISNEYREWARDS.COM Winter 2017
AN UNUSUAL JOURNEY “There’s no one to help Miguel until he discovers his family’s history,” adds Molina. To do that, Miguel journeys to the Land of the Dead on Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). To capture this vibrant traditional Mexican holiday, Pixar filmmakers journeyed to Oaxaca, Mexico to explore it firsthand. “People gather to clean and decorate the graves of their loved ones,” Molina says. “They bring food in remembrance. They picnic, stay up all night, play music. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate the lives of those they love, and to feel connected to them.” A LOYAL COMPANION Miguel is accompanied on his journey by his faithful dog, Dante, a traditional Mexican hairless breed known as Xoloitzcuintli, or Xolo. “The breed dates back to the Aztecs,” Anderson says. “We saw many of them when we were in Mexico and we also had several Xolos come in to Pixar for the artists to observe and sketch. We all developed quite a soft spot for them.” According to Anderson, Xolos lose their back teeth easily, so their tongues flop out. “We used that as inspiration for Dante,” she says. “He has a really goofy, funny tongue.” A TRICKY SIDEKICK Navigating the strange land requires a guide, and Miguel finds one in a quirky skeleton named Héctor who makes no bones about his free-wheeling, independent spirit.
- Adrian Molina, Director & Screenwriter
- Name Lastname - Name Lastname
“We have many rounds of character development,” Molina says. “We want our characters to fit into the logic and working rules of the world we’re creating. We started with the idea that being remembered is what keeps the folks in Land of the Dead held together. Héctor is not remembered very well, so his bones come apart easily and jiggle when he moves.” FINDING THE FUNNY BONE “Main characters like Miguel have to carry the weight of the story,” Molina adds. “With Héctor, we could just have fun. He is kind of falling apart and he has pieces that are loose or missing. But what he lacks in polish, he makes up for in charisma and humor. He’s a trickster. He helps Miguel, but there’s no doubt he wants to get something out of it.”
According to Molina, a story like Coco comes together after a lot of research, exploration, writing and rewriting. “Developing a film is always a voyage of discovery,” Molina says. “The story and characters always evolve. But the overarching theme of Coco has always been the same. It’s a story about the importance of connecting with family and the traditions and tales handed down from generation to generation. I hope Coco inspires viewers to discover their own family stories by asking older members of their families what they remember and building lasting connections,” concludes Molina. Get into the holiday spirit and redeem your Disney Rewards Dollars to enjoy Coco with your family.4 You can use your Disney Rewards Redemption Card at DisneyRewards.com to redeem toward movie tickets at participating theaters.

40 Years of Heroism Discover the next stage of Luke Skywalker’s evolution as Mark Hamill shares his thoughts on his character’s 40-year journey in Star Wars: The Last Jedi premiering December 15.
Q. What has it been like to work with Rian Johnson, the film's director? A. I couldn’t have done this without Rian. The Star Wars saga is such a huge responsibility. There was one day when Rian and I were meeting and I told him, “This is so high profile, I have to admit, I’m terrified.” He looked at me and said, “I am too.” Rian is so gifted. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him. I couldn’t have done this role without his judgment and input. I believe in him. I believe in his judgment completely. Every step of the way I let him be my guru. If he’s happy with a scene, then I’m happy.
Q. You’ve had a great career. How do you feel about being so strongly identified with and remembered for your portrayal of Luke Skywalker and with Star Wars in general? A. To tell you the truth, when I started my career, I didn’t expect to be remembered for anything! I certainly never would have guessed that portraying Luke Skywalker would be so meaningful for me personally. These stories and the love people have for them is so huge, to be part of them is an enormous honor. I never take it for granted.

Q. Luke has been described as “dark” in this film. Would you agree? A. In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Luke has lost confidence in his ability to make good choices. It haunts him to the core. But he hasn’t gone to the dark side. This isn’t an evil version of him. But it’s still an incarnation of the character I never expected. It has pulled me out of my comfort zone. It’s a real challenge. Q. In the trailers, we hear Luke say “It’s time for the Jedi to end.” What was your reaction when you first read that line in the script? A. I’m sure this line is a great shock to the audience, so you can imagine how I felt! This is a huge change for a character who once represented optimism and hope. It’s a radical decision to drop out of everything he’s ever believed in. The entire movie is filled with these kinds of jaw-dropping surprises, but you’ll just have to see the film itself to discover what they are.
S
Q. Has Luke’s character changed over the years? A. Actually, I don’t think Luke’s fundamental personality has changed, except that he is older and his life experiences have shaped his outlook the same way they do for all of us.
Q. As an actor how do you build the essence of a much-younger character into the character who has aged and matured? A. The biggest challenge for me was actually in the time between Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I had to know what had happened to Luke during those years. I had to glean decades of backstory from the script. And some of it I had to make up for myself. I had to know what he went through during that time. It’s not important to the storyline for this film, but I did discuss some of my thoughts with Rian Johnson (the film’s writer and director) to make sure I wasn’t coming up with anything in my personal backstory that would affect Luke’s portrayal in this film.
DI
Q. Are you just a bit surprised to still be portraying Luke Skywalker after all these years? A. I’ll answer that question with a story. We were working on the very first film, and George (Lucas) said to me, “What would you think about coming back to do another film?” I asked “When would this be?” and he said “Oh well, maybe 2011.” I thought, “Gosh, I’ll be in my late 50s by then.” And now—well, here I am!

STAYING AUTHENTIC TO THE CULTURE For the Moana sequence, Vincent and Stuart worked closely with the film’s choreographer, Tiana N. Liufau. “She taught us the original choreography from the song ‘Where You Are.’ We then found ways to translate it to the ice. It was important for us to stay as close as possible to the authenticity of the movement in the film. Working with Tiana was a wonderful experience,” Stuart says. AMAZING FILM MOMENTS “Maui’s ‘You’re Welcome’ song was another moment we had a lot of fun figuring out,” Stuart recalls. “When we looked at the movie, what popped for us were his tattoos, so we’re filling the ice with them. It’s a really fun interpretation of the song and we think the audience will enjoy seeing the tattoos come to life.” In the film, the ocean itself is a character and plays an essential part of Moana’s story. “It has chosen her,” Vincent reminds us, “so we couldn’t ignore it. We’re using fabric in some very unique ways to represent water. There’s a beautiful, flowing Manta Ray that gracefully appears in a couple of the scenes. The water fabric also plays a crucial part in the ‘Away’ sequence," explains Vincent.
“Our reward is seeing families singing and dancing in the aisles and knowing we’ve given them a truly special experience to share together.”
Bringing Adventure to Life
— Patty Vincent, Creative Director, Disney On Ice
Discover spectacular ice skating, athleticism and the storytelling of Disney On Ice presents Dare To Dream. Disney On Ice presents Dare To Dream, which debuted September 29, in Fairfax, Virginia, ties together the tales of Moana, Frozen, Tangled, Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella with a common theme: courage. “It takes courage to face and overcome obstacles in order to pursue a dream,” says Patty Vincent, Creative Director for Disney On Ice. “That is the underlying thread in all these stories, so this show is a celebration of the courage inside us all.”
12
EVERY MOVEMENT TELLS A STORY Deciding on the show's theme was just the beginning of more than a year of preparation. “The stories are all wonderful,

so our task is to find a way to condense them and still keep the emotions and the moments everyone knows and loves,” Vincent says. Vincent and Disney On Ice Principal Choreographer, Cindy Stuart, worked closely together to meet the challenge for Disney On Ice presents Dare To Dream. “We tell our stories through music and movement,” Stuart says. “Skating has its own language. There are things in an animated film that we simply can’t do with real bodies on ice. Yet our goal is always to stay true to what the filmmakers intended and what’s appropriate for a character.”
CURTAIN GOING UP! During the planning and preparation phase, scenic, costume and lighting designers were all working to capture the essence of the film as well. Finally, after months of work, it’s time for rehearsals. “This is my favorite part of the process,” Vincent says. “We’ve all been working on the development for a year or more, and finally we get to the rehearsal stage and we can see it all beginning to come together, to move and come to life. It takes about six weeks of 8-10 hour a day rehearsals, but suddenly everything you’ve been dreaming, thinking and talking about begins to happen. There’s always a moment when you know you’ve got it, and that you’ve done what you set out to do—giving families something truly special to experience and remember.” Get your skates on and spin over to see Disney On Ice presents Dare To Dream. Take advantage of the special Cardmember offer on page 15 and prepare to glide into enchantment.

Star Wars—The Dark Side of Hot Chocolate.
Oh Boy! Mickey and Minnie Stockings! When it comes to the holidays, hanging the stockings with care is a treasured tradition. With a few simple modifications to a standard red Christmas stocking, this classic design can become either Minnie or Mickey…or, why not both?
STEP 1: Affix plaid fabric to make a cuff at the top of the stocking using no-sew glue. STEP 2: Use hot glue to attach
mini-wreaths to the back of the stocking and greenery along the bottom of the plaid cuff.
STEP 3: For Minnie, tie a gold felt bow. For Mickey, cut gold felt buttons. Attach with hot glue. Now tuck some surprises inside with stocking stuffers from Disney store!
Winter is the perfect time to cozy up inside with loved ones and a delicious cup of cocoa. We whipped up a holiday recipe featuring Disney store themed mugs and delectable accessories. Enjoy!
STEP 1: GATHER MATERIALS To create bite-size TIE fighters, use icing to affix thin chocolate wafer cookies and marshmallows.
STEP 2: GET CREATIVE Split a full-size cookie and use a toothpick to etch a matching trooper helmet design.
STEP 3: STIR IT UP
Succumb to the dark side by making your favorite dark hot chocolate recipe.
STEP 4: TOP OFF THE DARK SIDE
