As a Level 6 student at her studio, Natalie spends at least eighteen hours per week in dance instruction. Most recently, Natalie spent the summer in New York City, where she studied with the School of American Ballet, the official school of the New York City Ballet. She has also attended summer intensives at Ballet Arizona and Point Park, where she received a merit scholarship. Natalie has taken a number of master classes taught by Tiffany Billings (Rockette), Simon Ball, and Roberto Munoz and Melinda Roy, directors of Saratoga Springs Dance Intensive. She has showcased her talent over the past several years at the New York City Dance Alliance, where she has been awarded ballet scholarships and Outstanding Execution awards, Platinum awards, and Critics’ Choice awards for her pointe work. Natalie hopes to one day follow in the footsteps of her instructors. POP EXPLOSION: The Artist and Popular Culture January 18 - March 29, 2014 Reception: Saturday, January 18, 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Sweetwater Center for the Arts
Pop culture entered the art world as a reaction to postwar consumerism: a visual interpretation of youthful optimism in dayto-day life. Artists recognized shared trends in music, film, fashion, consumerism, and advertising and brought them into the world of fine art, creating a depiction of the current ethos. With the technological developments of the 21st century, popular trends have boomed, leaving the art world with a much broader sense of what this ethos is in the contemporary moment. Tools that, in the past, have been used exclusively by the artist are now more readily available to everyone. The Internet, social media, up-and-coming apps, smart phones, and tablets are all channels that provide world access to popular culture and creativity. Contemporary artists who capture their source material directly from popular culture continue to explore exactly how “the now” becomes “the iconic.” This exhibition is juried by Nicholas Chambers, The Milton Fine Curator of Art at the Andy Warhol Museum, and Robert Beckman, Director at Artists Image Resource. This reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.
