ABSTRACT

Three new species of the Asian genus Taeniodera Burmeister are described and illustrated: T. celebensis (North Sulawesi), T. inermis (Sabah) and T. bandahara (North Sumatra).

INTRODUCTION

T h e following descriptions of three new cetoniine beetles have resulted f r o m a partial revision of the material of this group kept i n the L e i d e n m u s e u m . T h e three new species belong to the genus Taeniodera Burmeister. T h e majority of its species are flower-frequenting inhabitants of O r i e n t a l rainforest regions. T h e first new species described below constitutes the second record of the genus for Sulawesi. T h e second novelty, from B o r n e o , may have been overlooked by other workers, because it nearly perfectly duplicates a k n o w n species. T h e third novelty was collected d u r i n g m y 1972 expedition to M t B a n d a h a r a i n N o r t h S u m a t r a . Taeniodera has recently been treated by M i k š i ć(1976), who mentioned ca. 50 species. H i s keys are artificial, a n d p e n d i n g a phylogenetically oriented reclassification of the T a e n i o d e r i n i m y statements o n the affinities of the new species can only be provisional. DESCRIPTIONS

Taeniodera celebensis sp. nov. (figs. 1­7) H o l o t y p e (male). — A p p r o x i m a t e length 18, w i d t h 7.5, height 5 m m . D e r m black, partly velutinous, largely covered w i t h dense, symmetrically patterned ochreous to l i g h t ­ b r o w n t o m e n t u m . Pilosity yellowish, very abundant, but i n ­ conspicuous. H a b i t u s like other Taeniodera species.

M i d d l e a n d h i n d tibiae (fig. 5) w i t h poorly pronounced external elevation ca. halfway their length; tibial apices inferiorly bidentate; t e r m i n a l spurs simply tapering; internal side of h i n d tibia w i t h dense fringe of setae longer than tibial w i d t h ; tibial d e r m sparsely tomen­ tous. T a r s i all slender, with large sickle­shaped claws. Posterolateral angle of h i n d coxa ca. 100°; h i n d coxal surface completely tomentous. Parameres, fig. 7. Female sex u n k n o w n . Identification. — Taeniodera celebensis stands isolated w i t h i n the genus. It is i m ­ mediately recognizable by the combination of a reflexed clypeal m a r g i n , steep elytral lateral declivities, the overall colour pattern, the long h i n d tibial setae, and the shape of the parameres. H i t h e r t o only one Taeniodera species has been recorded from Sulawesi, Τ. nigrithorax Mikšić, w h i c h has, inter a l i a , very dif­ ferent colours; the thorax a n d the p y g i d i u m of that species are entirely black. D e r m b r o w n , largely velutinous, largely covered w i t h dense, symmetrically pat­ terned dirty whitish to pale­ochreous t o m e n t u m . Pilosity yellowish, m a i n l y on pectus. H a b i t u s very similar to that of Taeniodera marmorata (Wallace). C e p h a l i c contours a n d disposition of t o m e n t u m , fig. 8. Fore tibia (fig. 11) w i t h 3 external denticles; t e r m i n a l spur l o n g , acuminate, reaching tarsal segment 3. Identification. — T h i s species is extremely similar to Taeniodera marmorata (Wallace), but differs distinctly by l a c k i n g both the peculiarly elongated inferior­ internal apical denticle of the h i n d tibiae a n d the strongly c u r v e d , enlarged h i n d tibial spurs; i n Τ. inermis all this is u n m o d i f i e d . T h e parameres are also different, w h i c h is particularly evident i n lateral view (fig. 15, 16). Τ. inermis may easily be overlooked i n series of marmorata. Johannes Waterstradt has been o n M t K i n a b a l u several times between 1890 and 1912 ( V a n S t e e n i s ­ K r u s e m a n , 1950, and other sources).

D e r m largely black, partly velutinous, w i t h symmetrically patterned, more or less m a r ­ morate, ochreous to light greyish­brown t o m e n t u m ; its density strongly variant. Pilosity yellowish, very abundant, mostly short, l o n g o n pectus. H a b i t u s like other Taeniodera species. C e p h a l i c contours a n d disposition of t o m e n t u m , fig. 17. Identification. — T h i s species is characterized, inter alia, by its lightcoloured, loosely marmorate dorsal tomentous pattern on an opaque black substrate; by the distinctly 3-dentate fore tibiae; by the distinct external p r o t r u sions on the middle and h i n d tibiae; by the slight mesometasternal protrusion; by the abdomen being distinctly visible from above; by its parameres; and by its size. I n these characters T. bandahara differs from the superficially similar T. cervina (Wallace). T h e colour pattern is somewhat similar to T. inermis (described above) and T. marmorata (Wallace), but these species are very different i n other characters, i n c l u d i n g the parameral shape.
