EIC’s Message EIC Farewell

T

he end of my second term as editor in chief is fast approaching, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues on the editorial board and the staff at IEEE Computer Society for all their support during these four years. I hope you have enjoyed the way our magazine has evolved over this period of time. It’s been a lot of work, but I’ve had a ball being at the helm of the only publication of its kind in the multimedia field. Our next editor in chief will be Dr. Forouzan Golshani from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Arizona State University. Please join me in wishing him success in his new venture. I can’t wait to see the new directions the magazine will explore.

Forouzan Golshani is a professor of computer science and engineering at Arizona State University and the director of its Multimedia Information Systems Laboratory. Prior to this, he was with the

Department of Computing at Imperial College, London. His areas of expertise include multimedia computing and communication, particularly video content extraction and representation, and multimedia information integration. He is the cofounder of Corporate Enhancement Group and Roz Software Systems. He has worked as a consultant with Motorola, Intel, Bull Worldwide Information Systems, iPhysicianNet, Honeywell, McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Company, and Sperry. He has patented nine inventions and published more than 120 technical articles in books, journals, and conference proceedings. Forouzan is actively involved in professional services, including chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Computer Languages and IEEE Distinguished Speaker program. He has been chair of six international conferences, program chair for five others, and a program committee member for over 70 conferences. He has served on the IEEE MultiMedia editorial board since its inception and at different times wrote the Reviews and News columns. He has a PhD in computer science from the University of Warwick, England.

2002 IEEE MultiMedia Editorial Calendar Jan.-Mar.: Advances in Multimedia

July-Sept.: Multimedia R&D

Multimedia means different things to different communities. For researchers, it might be databases, search engines, or indexing tools, whereas content providers might be more concerned with streaming audio and video, compression techniques, and content distribution methods.

Multimedia systems and applications involve a broad range of topics, including hardware and software for media compression, media storage/transport, workstation support, data modeling, and abstractions to embedded multimedia in application programs. Even with this wide coverage, multimedia is still spreading its influence to nontraditional professional sections such as medicine, education, and the military.

April-June: Content-Based Multimedia Indexing and Retrieval

Oct.-Dec.: Networked Appliances

Important research areas in multimedia indexing include audio, video, image, textual, and information retrieval. This special issue will cover the state of the art in multimedia indexing, especially image indexing, video indexing, user access and annotation, description of semantic content, and applications.

As more appliances become digital and intelligent, the desire to control and exchange information between them increases. From household to entertainment to computing and communication appliances, we can enhance products through interactive synergy, obtaining capabilities and applications not yet thought of.
