he original 1.687 inch ACE Tubing Cutter (CUT-1687-409) was introduced in August 2011. The ACE product line is now expanded to three cutter sizes with the introduction of the 2.062 inch (CUT-2062-409) and the 1.875 inch Extended Range Tubing Cutter (CUT1875-419). Customers have been extremely pleased with ACE cutter performance in all three sizes. The entire ACE™ product line has fulfilled all requirements and expectations for performance, quality, reliability and safety. ACE™ Tubing Cutters sizes and recommended applications include: ACE™ CUTTER SIZE

One example from the field development stage involved the 2.062 ACE™ Tubing Cutter. The client knew he had 2-7/8” tubing in heavy mud, but was unsure of other details, such as tubing weight. The pipe was successfully cut using only a single ACE™ cutter. Surface indications suggested the tubing came free immediately following the cutter firing. Upon retrieval, the cut tubing was determined to be 8.9#/foot, which is the upper weight range limit for this cutter. Field development jobs have substantiated the design and testing specifications for the ACE™ Tubing Cutter. The ACE™ product line is quickly establishing itself as the best choice in the industry as Owen Oil Tools introduces its next generation of jet cutters. — Jeff Wood Design Engineer, Pipe Recovery Systems

TAG-3375-331

In July 2011, a customer requested a project to develop a new charge requiring 29.81” of penetration with a 0.57” exit hole. In September 2011, the TAG-3375-331 charge was developed with a QC performance average of 31.96” penetration with a 0.60” exit hole. In RP-43, a 3-3/8” gun with 6 spf at 60 degrees has a performance average of 31.14” penetration with a 0.56” exit hole. This performance produces deep penetration similar to a SDP (Super Deep Penetrator) while competing with the exit hole of a GH (Good Hole) charge. The development of this charge compliments a lineup of several 3-3/8” industry leading TAG gun systems.

Engineering Testing Services In order to provide our customers a higher level of testing solutions and faster response time, Owen has recently completed construction of our main building in the North Range Testing Facility. This will provide Engineering Testing Services and our customers a dedicated facility that is independent of Owen’s other Manufacturing and Engineering facilities. The building includes a remote observation area, explosives loading area, fabrication shop, and offices. The remote observation area allows larger groups of customers to view tests through live video feeds, and it can be quickly converted into a conference room or classroom for training of all types.

HTD-BLAST™ System Owen Oil Tools developed the HTD-BLAST™ System to minimize the cost and time to perforate horizontal wells. This innovative system may be run with coiled or threaded tubing. The system is used to perforate multiple zones with a single trip in the wellbore using a single firing head. An HTD-BLAST™ System is placed between each gun in the string which minimizes the length of the gun string compared to using a traditional pressure actuated firing head on each gun. The operation of the system is as follows. The gun string is run to the first interval and the first gun is detonated with the pressure firing head. Detonation of the first gun activates the HTD-BLAST™ System which includes a sealed firing pin that strikes an igniter. The system is threaded to a Time Delay Fuse housing (with 6-minute Time Delay Fuse) connected to the next gun. Detonation of the gun drives the firing pin into the igniter which ignites the Time Delay Fuse. As the Time Delay Fuse burns the gun string is moved to the next interval. When the Time Delay Fuse finishes burning the second interval is perforated and the next HTDBLAST™ is activated. This process continues until all zones have been perforated. Based on customer feedback, several improvements were recently implemented. The phenolic insert has been replaced with a steel insert to focus detonation of the booster and for ease of removal during clean up. The firing pin has been revised to shear cleanly and apply full impact to the igniter. The firing pin housing includes cutouts to focus detonation pressure onto the firing pin. Owen Oil Tools continues to improve this innovative system while maintaining a focus on reliability and ease of use. Customers are very pleased with the success they have achieved with the patented HTD-BLAST™ System. — Tim LaGrange Manager, Innovative Development Group

Unidet Rating Change Owen Oil Tools has changed its pressure and temperature ratings for the exposed “Unidet” detonator (DET-3050-001). Owen conducts Quality Control testing on every lot of detonators manufactured and throughout this testing has seen auto-detonation failures due to pushing the detonating cord beyond its limits. Currently, there are no detonating cords manufactured with exposed ratings that match that of the Unidet at 450 °F and 25,000 PSI. Therefore, the testing that Owen has been performing is in excess of all cord ratings. Additionally, function testing has been done with the Unidet detonator at 450 °F and 25,000 PSI successfully without cord; however, in the best interest of our customers and in order to eliminate confusion between our

detonator rating and that of cord ratings. Owen now offers the detonator with dual temperature and pressure ratings to prevent auto-detonation failures. These new ratings still push the envelope of the current detonating cords for exposed applications, but are more in-line with current manufacture ratings and should provide for increased reliability. The detonator will be rated at the following for one hour: 450 °F @ 20,000 PSI 400 °F @ 25,000 PSI This change is effective as of 2/29/2012 with lot date 29FEB12 C1. — Brian Strokes Design Engineer, Initiation Systems
