TIPS TO MAKE COURTHOUSES TRAUMA-INFORMED DEVELOP SUPPORTIVE ENTRYWAYS

Create entry processes that are clear and spacious. Ensure accessible information about requirements for entry and provide landing zones for people to replace clothing or other items removed during the entry process. Create separate, private court entryways for defendants entering the court from jail.

ESTABLISH CLEAR WAYFINDING

Provide wayfinding materials that leverage technology, are culturallyappropriate, and are accessible to people with disabilities. Consider using messaging about what individuals can do instead of what they cannot do.

CREATE PRIVATE AND SAFE SPACES

Designate private areas for people to conduct sensitive business activity or discussions. Make these accessible to victims, defendants, or others who would benefit.

DECORATE MINDFULLY

When possible, use natural lighting. Design and decorate in a way that communicates transparency and accessibility, such as use of windows facing green space, glass walls, and glass doors. Keep public areas clean.
